The French police are used to riot dispersal, and tear gas. They don't tend to fuck around. In England, we have a long tradition of policing by consent, of the police being very close to crowds etc. You can't do that if you're the gendarme and all toting MP5s. Even their usual Police Nationale tend to be armed, and that does involve a different kind of policing. English/Russian football hooliganism is not something they have to deal with very often. I will be fascinated to see how many people are very seriously injured by police in 2018 in Russia.
