Spent most of the afternoon watching full game recordings of our more famous finals defeats and notice that the punditry became far more obnoxious around the turn of the century. One of my favourite differences is that idiot ex-players like Ian Wright and Robbie Savage were consigned to pitch-side half-time analysis slots that never ran for more than a minute. Another highlight was Bobby Robson and Terry Venables evaluation of England's first half performance against Argentina at France 98 which peaks at understated and then bottoms out at completely indifferent after about five minutes. Neither they nor Bob Wilson showed any great deal of enthusiasm for Owen's now-famous solo goal, either: discussion on that point lasting for roughly 30 seconds; I imagine if it had been scored today the pundits wouldn't stop talking about it, the Maradona comparisons would be flogged to death and every fucking ad break would end with an over-stylised edit of the goal from a jarring angle.

People ask where it went so wrong for the country: we let Mark fucking Chapman replace Bob Wilson, without giving the smarmy c*** a slap. That's a crystallisation of the collapse of our national collective, right there.

I know what I'm doing next afternoon I'm bored. Where did you watch them Jockers?

I remember watching an England match from Euro 96 a while ago and what impressed me most was how damn good McManaman was, he terrified the opposition (think it was the Spain QF actually)

All on Youtube, mate. Just type in the match and year and you should find a video. None for either Portugal game, though, unfortunately. Had to make do with extended highlights.

Undefeated though. Unlike Wales.

In Wales S4C have been replaying some famous Wales international matches in full. They're excellent as you normally just remember moments from games rather than the ebb and flow.

Watched one from 1993 where Mark Hughes kicked the Belgians off the park. Genuinely made four red card challenges.

Also gives you an added perspective of stuff like realising McManaman was a very good player.

I haven't watched all of England's games but did notice against Wales that they seemed far too quick to shoot or get the ball in the box quickly. They would have taken the lead a lot earlier had they been a little more patient. How many of those 102304 shots were clear chances?

Explain why Wilshere shouldn't be on the plane? 6 out of 7 MOM'sExplain why Wilshere shouldn't be on the plane? 6 out of 7 MOM's and is one of our best players.

Wilshere can easily play RCM or LCM, it's his position. He's not a natural holding midfielder and personally I don't like him as a number 10.

Alli is 19 and can easily play box to box, he's energetic and good in the tackle, although I agree I'd rather see him behind the 2 strikers.

Rooney was brilliant as a CM in the FA Cup final so I'd like to see him there.

Lallana and Sterling don't deserve to be starting at all.

Are you serious?

You think Wilshere is shit but say Lallana, who has literally done NOTHING for England, has barely form anything for Liverpool, can't finish 90 minutes HAS to start?!

Hi Sam,

Just wondering what your thoughts are now after watching the first 3 matches?

Lallana has been our best attacking player without a shadow of a doubt. Wilshere was fucking shite against Slovakia. Alli has been utter garbage playing in that awful midfield formation.

I really don't understand how Roy particularly, but even people who watch these players play all of the time for England, can not see the fucking basics in a game of football.

It truly baffles me. And if Roy plays with the team the BBC have predicted this morning, god forbid, it's going to be a painful match to watch tonight.

I think Lallana is a pile of w*nk to be honest.

Thoughts now, Pro Green?

Well there we are then lads.

Piss poor showing.

We played four poor to average (apparently) sides and we only managed to beat one of them.

And scored a whole 1 goal that wasn't from a set piece.

Long term gains.
Every tournament since 2002 I've gone in thinking at least it won't be as bad as last time and every time England find a way to prove me wrong.

I told a fella at work we could go out to Iceland. A part of me believed it, but a bigger part of myself told myself it wouldn't (couldn't) happen. Yet here we sit.

We aren't a bad side and we've become a far better side under Hodgson. But the trouble stems from our inability to create chances. Our players need better close control and player awareness.
Vardy appears to be the only inventive forward we have. Someone willing to try something different.

We need to build on what Roy started.
This isn't the end of the world, it only feels like it is.

Why do so many England players wear long sleeved tops in a summer tournament?

Fucking fannies.

6 wins in major tournaments in 50 years and people still get surprised by England failing.

I don't think people are surprised. Just as angry though.

Yup, 6 knockout wins in 25 tournaments since the 1966 World Cup. That's embarrassingly fucking poor.

Glad we lost. Couldn't have stomached the nationalism tbh. It's not the time for our national team to be good, so thanks Kane etc.
