Picking up on a Shoddy inspired nostalgia trip, notable players I've seen at Holker Street playing in Division 4 1966/67 (and Division 3 1967/68) include:

Johnny Haynes
Don Rogers
Malcolm McDonald
Tony Currie
Tony Hateley
Neil Warnock
Stan Bowles

Plus, of course, legendary ex-Workington manager Bill Leivers.

Adam Le Fondre (2006-2010
Ricky Lambert (2005-07)
Billy Sharp (2005-07)
Lee Trundle (2003-05)
Sharp only played in L2 for a couple of months on loan at Rushden and Diamonds. His spell at Scunny (which I assume you're thinking of) was in League 1.

For us it would be Peter Beagrie, he was absolutely incredible at this level. Sam Winnall as well, only played one season here but scored 23 goals and is now a pretty good championship striker.

I give you:

Lee Sharp.

Hurrrr hurrrr (one of the worst players I've ever seen in an ECFC shirt)

Going back to that 06/07 season, I've just looked at the top scorers that season:

Ritchie Barker
Izale McLeod
Glen Murray
Jamie Forrester
Clive Platt
Chris Dagnall
Jermaine Easter
Anthony Elding
Mark Stallard
Andy Bishop
Richard Walker

All only separated by five goals. Some brilliant strikers in there.

Davide Somma, total class act for us.
Such a shame his career was cut short by injury.

Should probably give Collins a mention you know that striker who plays for Luton I forget his first name, he has banged loads of goals in for whoever he has been at the last few seasons.

Also for Lincoln back in the day there were the likes of Ben Futcher and Jamie McCome in their defence who were always shit to be up against.

Oh does anyone remember Junior Agogo?[/QUOTE]
Poor Junior is not doing so well these days, having suffered a stroke a couple of years ago (in his late 30s!) and not having made a full recovery since then.
He had a very good season with us back in 02/03 before we sold him to Bristol Rovers.

Wasn’t ‘League Two’ at the time but we had a young David Beckham down at the Bank playing for Preston circa 95(ish). Rattled the post with a 25 yard free kick as well.

A bit later Gazza turned up with Boston and, although he acted like a bit of a tit, he’s the best English player of my generation (in my opinion).

That as a bizarre week.

We had Ian Rush turn up as Chester manager, then as you say, Gazza with Boston. Cruising at 2-0 up, he came on and changed the game.

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
Got to be Drew Broughton.

I mean probably most of L1 and L2 took him on as a player......for an odd month or two.

Been away from this forum for a while now for obvious reasons (us being utter sh*te) and came across this thread...

Now this is a biased opinion, but Jack Lester has got to be in with a shout here as one of the best to play at this level! 07-08, 08-09 and 10-11 seasons especially when he was injury free, the guy was absolutely unplayable and ofcourse he became a club legend down here! Gary Roberts was also a class above the rest of the league for us in 2013/14 and won player of the year ;)

Other players that have really impressed me over the years include the likes of Le fondre, Marc Richards when at vale (was alright for us), George Boyd, Aaron McLean and Craig Mackail smith were very good for Peterborough from what I can remember, as were Ben Davies and Lee Hughes for Notts in the 09/10 season!

Agree with all those suggestions ODL, a quality bunch that. I was always a Jack Lester fan especially further down the divisions, Posh had the famous 3 at that time who tore it up and for Notts Benny D was “Mr supply” from set pieces or open play and Lee Hughes was simplify the best natural finisher I’ve seen in the famous black and white stripes

I was surprised that no one had mentioned Ben Davies from that season tbh! I remember the trip to meadow lane, think we got beat 2-0 and he tore us a new one!!

I would have enjoyed watching an all-star L2 front 3 of Akinfenwa, Parkin and Rhead playing together.

Would WREAK HAVOC. Very slowly.

Indeed. You basically punt it to one of them about 3/4 of the way up the pitch, they play head tennis between them, trundling slowly forwards, flattening all puny weaklings who dare to oppose, then BOSH! Back of the net. And repeat.

Got to be Drewe Broughton's elbows.

Corrected that for you. Any centre back in this division could feel proud to have been smashed in the face by one of the most prolific* journeymen this league has called its own.

*prolific in terms of number of clubs, obviously - number of goals, not so much.

Chris Sutton signed Drewe Broughton for us and gave him £1.2k a week. :ffs:

One of our highest earners that season (although shipped out on loan for much of it IIRC after Sutton resigned).

I’m throwing Kwesi Appiah in there. We had him for half a season in our first season back in League 2. He only scored 8 goals for us but they were ridiculously good, the ones against Wimbledon and Oxford in particular.

He destroyed a lot of teams tbf, every time we had an attacking free kick with him stood over the ball you just felt at least a good chance, if not a goal was coming.

Sadly not felt that feeling since , I’m fact for a few seasons on the trot I would go for a toilet break on Notts’ attacking corners

I was the confident I was missing nothing

Danny Mayor in 2014/15 was special for us on the wing. Won League Two player of the season that year too.. unfortunately injuries seem to have plagued him since we went up to L1 but he still oozes class.

4 out of the 10 contenders were his goals.. goals 1,5,6 and 8 if anyone fancies watching.
