The Ring was on after MOTD last night, not seen in ages and ended up watching the whole thing.

Still quite like it, that kid is creepy as fuck and the coming out of the well/ tv is still really well done

The American version? I know it gets a bad reputation but I really like it. Creeped me right out the first time I saw it.

Kill List is great, as are Ben Wheatley's other features. The Ring remake was decent, still prefer the Japanese version though, was much more eerie imho.

Yeah the remake. Its not one thats so good I can watch it all the time, but just every once in a while and it's still pretty good. Like all good horror films too, it has the 'everythings all right now...oh shit no it isnt' bit at the end too, which is always pleasing!

I haven't seen the original to compare it to but it appears on my top 20 list (I can sense Knockers' derision already).

^^^^ The best thing about Wheatley's films is the sense of place, and the undercurrent of unease about the British landscape that runs through them*. There's a hint of something psychogeographical going on in the way that they take locations (rural, urban, suburban, terrain vagues) that might usually be overlooked or deemed quotidian and imbue them with something nebulously terrible and eldritch, positing them as loci of latent energies, arcane forces. It's a bit Weird Fiction, but distinctly British - a post modern Penda's Fen. It's evident in his evoking of genre and cinematic tropes as well, the way the set-ups seduce the viewer into thinking they're watching a Mike Leigh homage, or a Gritty British Crime Thriller™, or an oddball costume drama, only for something much stranger to come bubbling through to the surface. Kitchen Sink Irrealism. I'm not sure he always nails it (dropping Jerusalem on the Sightseers soundtrack was way too on the nose, for eg), but when he does it;s very good. Curious to see how High Rise has turned out, which should sit pretty squarely in the crosshairs of this sort of thing (not so sure about the Boston set gangster movie, maybe if it was in Lincolnshire...)

*I think this is the best thing about It Follows as well, since it's being talked about, the hazily atemporal Lynch via Crewdson Americana nostalgia...

Watching a collection of Dario Argento horror movies, started with the trilogy of Three Mothers: Suspiria, Inferno and Mother of Tears.

Suspiria (1977): This movie was the reason of me looking more of Dario Argento. It’s one of my favorite movies. To begin, the graphics are great and I totally like its gore moments. An American girl who goes to this dance school at Germany and finds a lot of suspicious occurrences involving her colleagues who started discovering dark secrets about the place, and all the mystery with pinches of obscurity is totally well done. To me it’s a masterpiece in video.

Inferno (1980): In this movie the story of the three mothers is firstly introduced which the first is located in Freiburg, Germany – The Mother of Sighs (Suspiria); the second is located in New York, USA – The Mother of Darkness/Pain (the one this movie is about); and the third is located in Rome, Italy – The Mother of Tears. Each mother hides a mysterious key and a New Yorker girl who already gets the first key and now looks for the others with the help of her brother but of course there are people who will try to avoid anyone to find out the true. I like this movie and confess the water scene always frightens me.

Mother of Tears (2007): All starts with the discovery of a box with antique talismans at Rome that frees a bunch of chaos, evil and witches then the girl who was studying the mysterious objects sees herself each time more trapped with the true behind the weird happenings in chain. This movie is gorier than both the previous and it seems an attempt of being way crueler too. But the film development in a whole is very unsatisfactory.

None of them can beat the superiority of Suspiria but, despite kind of running away of the deployment of the main story and focusing more on the “chasing”, Inferno is enjoyable too. Mother of Tears, on the other hand, had a promissory start even with the animals’ reference also present in the other movies, but is disappointing and bad arranged.

To finish up I will go with: Deep Red, Opera, The Sect, The Wax Mask, The Church, Démoni, Phenomena and Tenebrae.

Event Horizon (1997)

Sam Neill as brilliant as ever, a good atmospheric space horror, plenty of dark scenes and a good plot

however the twist was predictable early on, and very little in the way of scares

Hush (2016)

Released today straight to Netflix. Quite a good little film actually. Home invasion film but the occupier is deaf/mute. Has a slight lull in the middle but gets on with it straight away and an enjoyable last 20/30.

I sometimes find these movies insulting to your intelligence with some of the illogical choices made by the victim. But this one is quite well done with the deaf angle adding a different perspective.

I'll give it a 7/10.

Caught up The Witch today. It's quite different from most stuff of the genre. And, for my pleasure, it's not that stereotyped psychological horror that tries at all costs to frighten the public with absolutely nothing by dropping "fake scares" scenes unendly. Actually I got very entertained with the movie's development and its unique atmosphere and strangeness. Despite the last scene - last seconds specifically - kind of bothered me. In a whole, enjoyed a lot the film, it's very good but misses something to reach the great level.

The Witch
One of the better horror films to come out in recent years and like voltage said, it was a pleasure to see it shy away from the norm and not sit around the usual cliche scares that get a bit stale. It was well paced and the there was enough character development to keep you interested in them, I thought the acting from the kids was rather impressive too, Mercy especially.

The ending wasn't the best but I've seen worse. Definitely one to watch. The Witch scrapes an 8/10 for me.

The Boy
Watched this with the Mrs. Thought it was pretty good, had some decent build up in terms of suspense and the doll is fucking weird.

The only let down was the fact the ending is basically Housebound. (Also a pretty good film.)

Steady 7/10. Definitely recommended for something that doesn't rely on any paranormal stuff or the usual type of clichéd scares.

The Reef (2010)
Passable Aussie horror concerning a group of friends stranded at sea when their boat is wrecked in shark infested shallow waters and they're faced with a choice of swimming 10 miles back to land or waiting for help before the boat sinks.

Thought this was actually quite good, quite a low budget film ($70k I believe).

A deaf mute writer gets stalked by some prick with a tattoo on his neck. He slowly makes his presence known and the film revolves around that.

Some real nice tense scenes, it's also quite bloody and the acting is bang on. One to watch. 8/10.

Friday 13, a great day for horror. Just won't have a Jason movies marathon because did it on this last date. But definitely couldn't miss horror in this day so decided to start a watchlist divided in 7 parts based on 1FF's horror list and some adds.

Part I
IT (1990): the most iconic clown of horror. The movie has ups and downs but I like it very much. The kids’ club thing and the mystery on chasing IT remit to that enjoyable nostalgia of adventure present in kids/early teen life, just more drawn to horror of course.

The innocents (1961): this is simply great. The psychological thriller put on it drags you to think in a number of situations behind the evil mystery of the happenings and increases the curiosity to know what the real secret is but then, brilliantly, this just is up to the viewer. And no, that doesn’t give that unfinished feeling to the movie but instead let us choose our best end in a very clever way as we have to accept our preferable hypothesis but the doubt will never be really addressed (and incredibly it doesn’t have to be to turn it very satisfactory).

Dead Ringers (1988): very peculiar. On the other hand also very linear, it doesn’t have surprising or boom moments despite the mentality issue being very well explored. But then it has Jeremy Irons brilliant acting to hold it flawlessly.

Kill, Baby… Kill! (1966): actually this one just looks vague to me. Things just don’t seem to connect to each other until the end is revealed but still it misses something to give whole sense to the plot development. Could’ve say it’s in a high pattern for 1966 but can’t since there’s great executed movies of the genre of even before, like the start of decade, as Psycho (1960) and the above mentioned The Innocents (1961). Though the girl ghost moments are well done and it's watchable. But it’s a waste the title so spoiling.
