How do American horror films fare over there SoC?

The Dooms Chapel Horror (2016)
Young man returns to his redneck home town with his girlfriend and a documentary maker with the intention of healing some past wounds involving the death of his brother that he was largely blamed for. Turns out his return sparks the resurrection of a curse that he had wished on the townsfolk before he left. Was really promising at first but then quickly turned a bit shit. 5/10

How do American horror films fare over there SoC?

Fairly well, The Conjuring was very favourably received. Most of the same horror films get mainstream releases here, plus they've got their own and there are more Japanese ones too but obviously they're subbed in Korean so I can't reap those benefits. I'd say that the general consensus is that American horror films are all about jumps and slashers though, so some of the better ones over the last few years haven't had the credit they deserve. The western genre that struggles here the most is without a doubt, comedy. They seldom get decent releases. All the time I have been here, I think The Interview (for obvious reasons) and for some reason Ted are about the only ones to get long runs.

On the one hand it's great to see the horror genre in such a healthy state at the moment, on the other it is a shame that it's largely down to audience pleasing jumpy mcjumpers (yeah I just typed that) that have ridiculously large budgets in comparison to some of the better stuff that gets overlooked for the most part. I'm struggling to think of a big release horror that I have absolutely loved in recent years. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy them for the most part of course, but there are some real gems that have largely gone under to radar recently.

Also watched Burning Bright (2010) last night. As far as animal horrors go it was decent viewing. Love Briana Evigan.

The Conjuring 2 (2016)
I wasn't that interested about this since the prequel movie didn't please me at all and I sincerely thought this would take the same path but I was curious about how some elements of this would be worked out. In the beginning I got kinda disappointed 'cause it seemed the element I was looking forward would be just a short side story and the first scenes about the main case took all over the same hype of the first movie with long psychological scenes that took nowhere and I was wary about it being excessive and exhausting like I felt watching The Conjuring 1. But nope. The psychological scenes were well dosed and this time they worked more with sounds what was a point I really enjoyed. Also there's more solid stuff for my taste like more directness and expressivity of the paranormal. This came with a baggage of cheesy moments but nothing really screwy. It wasn't a movie I ended up "wow" and I seriously miss the wow factor but I enjoyed the watch.

Stranger Things

TV series just been released on Netflix. The intro is fantastic. The rest of episode 1 was also very good and got me immediately invested in the story. The cast is excellent. Winona Ryder plays a good part but the stars of the show are the kids (who play the main parts). The other thing I like is that it's set in the 80s. It just works.

Very, very impressed by this so far. Just starting episode 2 and from reading reviews, it's a very good series in all.

As for the horror aspect, I'll leave that down to you to discover. It keeps you on edge certainly.

The Green Room (2015)
Backwoods horror starring Anton 'him wot killed himself with a car' Yelchin. A punk band find themselves stranded in rural Oregon so reluctantly agree to a gig at a neo-Nazi skinhead club. They witness a murder so then obviously aren't allowed to leave. Wasn't bad, hardly a classic though. 7/10.

6/8 episodes into Stranger Things. It's very good. Not particularly scary but the story is excellent and captivating. The casting has been spot on so far. I think that's one of the main reasons why I like it. The kids are very good, Winona Ryder is excellent, the sheriff is very good also. The mystery is very well done and is being slowly revealed piece by piece.

Recommended.

Finished Stranger Things. Fantastic. Don't want to say any more or I'll spoil but it's one of the best TV series I've watched for a while. Quirky, fantastic characters and heartwarming whilst maintaining that horror element.

It will be on exodus I'd have thought, but it's on Netflix too. I think we're going to start that tonight, heard great things. It's in the top 25 shows ever on IMDB already!

Just about to start episode 6, loving it so far. The nostalgia is huge and the score is even bigger.

Angel Heart (1987): About an investigator hired to find a famous singer and how much he discovers more weird stuff happens. Despite all the predictability the movie is done in a very perfeccionist way in terms of symbolism (the ventilator, the elevator, fragments of memory mixed with reality), scenery and approach of controversial themes that matches perfectly with horror (dark magic for example). The cast also makes it a good experience, young Lisa Bonet spreading talent and stupendous beauty, Robert De Niro with few appearances but still very strong and meaningful (the egg scene is incredible, so simple but De Niro made it brilliant) and Mickey Rourke on his apex.

The Haunting (1963): Four people go to a said haunted house for an experiment. On the stay one of them gets really disturbed, maybe just her mind, maybe not. It’s hard to find movies with such a psychological charge done that simply and still being so catchy for all the almost 2 hours. Surely an excellent psychological horror with no need of much extra elements. Once you get the small details (very wisely elaborated by the way) it’s still more striking. Read about a remake of 1999 and thinking about to give a try, though this has not good reviews as the 1963’s but with my childhood crush Mrs. Zeta Jones I can watch practically anything.

Eyes without a face (1960): A surgeon determined to gave back a pretty face to his defaced daughter. The tones of madness contradicting and at the same time complementing the craving for something better feeling all involved in such artistic and creepy environment. This movie is brilliant. It’s the first time I’ve seen it and can’t believe I didn’t watch it before. Now it’s surely among my favorites.

Victor Frankenstein (2016)
Passable take on the Frankenstein story with James McAvoy and Harry Potter. 6/10

Also watched the first few episodes of Stranger Things. It's not blowing me away but it's pretty enjoyable.

Any of you watched the From Dusk Til Dawn TV series?

I'm three episodes in and it's decent. First season so far has been an expansion on the original film. For example the first episode basically turned the first 10 minutes of the film into a 45 minutes episode. I like what they've done with it, plus they've added a few new characters.

I'm only three episodes in, but I'm not sure it can sustain itself past the novelty of the setting and the suspension of the mystery. More than anything, it feels like a poppy, throwaway companion to The Returned. The themes and character relationships are similar.

It does wear thin, but I think by keeping it to 8 episodes they avoided it becoming entirely humdrum.

I think I like it, but I've not finished it. We're on ep.6 or something. That's probably telling. Wrong thread, but we've kind of moved onto Mr Robot now. It's weird though, as I do the same job he does in that show, more or less
