You should see both Zootopia and the Jungle Book. Both are excellent movies and I enjoyed them a lot.

Well, I'd seen The Jungle Book as I mentioned... and I've now just seen Zootropolis as well.

And yeah, that was very good. Disney animation certainly seems to be on a roll right now since Tangled and I'm glad to see they've come out with another cracking film again. Feels like it's come out at the perfect time as well when you look at the state of the world right now.

Tell you what though, I've seen 5 movies in the cinema already so far this year and they've all been superb. Deadpool, The Revenant, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Jungle Book and now Zootropolis. Of course I kind of cheated by not seeing BvS, otherwise I'd not be able to see they've all been superb... but reviews scared me off

But Christ, all that and Civil War to come next. What a year!

Well, it's fucking nuts. It's really nothing special and the 1st person POV throughout the film started off quite fresh and exciting but it soon got tiresome. Tim Roth is cool though. 5/10.

Ok let's be honest here, it's dated incredibly poorly. It's actually pretty shit but absolutely classic at the same time. Arnie is awful, but he's brilliant. The script is dreadfully brilliant too. "I'll bleed you real quiet and leave you here. You got that?" 4/10 but 8/10.

Predator 2 next.

Not a bad film with some twists and turns as the story developed. The one man saving the world type of story has been over-used now however so I'd only go for a 6/10 as it became quite predictable in the 2nd half of the movie

Captain America: Civil War

Quite a few funny moments.
Ant-Man stole the show somewhat. I haven't read the comics but I thought the reasons/way Spider-Man got involved were a bit weak. Understandably they don't want the film to be too long but with so many characters involved it just felt like the reasons for the "civil war" needed to be fleshed out more. Could this have been split into 2 films like the next part? Particularly for the Airport fight (not saying the fight itself wasn't spectacular).

With Harrison Ford,Glenn Close and Gary Oldman among the cast i thought this would be decent but how wrong i was :ffs: Turned out to be like Die Hard on a plane involving The US President but was utter gash! 3/10.

Yeah most of the James Wan horror films start off great and are quite inventive and have intelligent scares for the first hour, then degenerate into clichéd stuff which is copied straight out of other films.

Very enjoyable film in my view. One I think people will like who liked kings speech

i'll give it 9 out of 10, well worth seeing and is for me the best performance Hugh Grant has ever done in his career.

I confess I didn't know exactly what this movie was about and gave it a watch only because of Emma Watson but it turned to be a great surprise since I enjoyed it a lot. Glad a movie put on the spotlight the atrocities commited by the disgusting Paul Schafer on Pinochet era who was undercoved by the same government and even his country embassy at Chile but despite him being punished (with a not even close enough time he really deserved for everything he did) many people who colaborated to it by helping to hide the bad stuff this insane man did are unpunished and unfortunately probably will stay like this. This is a movie that showed well this small dark part of Chile's history and it's also a good watch to who likes films involving sects (not supernatural) and an elaborated escapism with a pitch of drama. 9.5/10.
*not sure about the release year as found it as 2015 and 2016 in various sites

The Graduate

A recent graduate comes home for the summer and is seduced by his older, married neighbour. Probably one of the most famous endings in film, much parodied.

It's funny, we'll acted, good storyline and the soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel is brilliant. What's not to like? 8.7/10

The Battle Of Algiers [1966]

Compelling and at times unsettling in modern contexts film, about the Algerians seeking independence from their colonial master, France in the Fifties. I read a bit about this deeply complex issue before watching to get up to speed on it; and this film does a great job at approaching it from as neutral a viewpoint as possible, showing both sides using ever increasingly evil ways of trying to get their way. The French invaded Algeria in the 19th century on a soft slight to one of their consuls and patriotism, and stayed for over 100 years, but their rule was marked by some particularly nasty events including a massacre in the Forties. Eventually a resistence front was formed by a small group of Algerians and they used terror and propaganda on the streets to get their message across and incite the general populus to rise up in revolt. It is hard during the film to empathise with them though when a few scenes, which were very hard to watch, are very reminiscent of the recent Paris and Brussels attacks while saying 'God go with you', and also how indiscriminately they gun down civilians in drive-by shootings. Eventually the paratroopers are brought in, and they begin to use torture to get suspects, and also bomb houses they think are holding resistance members; and although this method works to great effect, it doesn't go down well back in France itself.

Its a brilliant film, shot in a hand-held and documentary style and a lot of it looks almost as if it is taken off of news-reels (which wasn't the case), and the use of non-professional actors and thousands of extra's adds a lot of realism. One guy did look a lot like Diego Costa though which brought me out of it for a bit! :D

Well worth a watch if you are interested in this complicated issue of empire, revolt and the methods use by both sides for power control.

10/10

The way the film concludes is interesting as it suggests that while the French win the battle of Algiers itself rooting out the resistence members, the demonstrations and riots that the general populus show, suggest that they lose the Algerian War. It's fascinating to note that this rocked France to its very core, as they eventually not only lost Algeria, it also upset the whole political stability in France itself such that it brought down the Fourth Republic and had to modernise and rebuild into today's Fifth Republic. And I thought the Suez Crisis we had back then was bad enough!

Kajaki [2014]

Moving film telling the story about British paratroopers trying to get out of a valley of mines in Afghanistan where the situation goes from bad to worse as they wait on an airlift out.

Well acted and respectful from the actors who were portraying real soldiers; and I liked them all straight from the start so as the horror unfolds you really feel for them. The tension was palpable throughout the film as they waited on airlift support as their conditions deteriorated, and not knowing where to step in case of an explosion occurring. There was a lot of uniquely British black humour in it as well as they tried to keep their morale up also which made for some very funny bits.

Excellent and insightful film of life of a modern day soldier in a hostile environment; I hadn't heard about this film until brought up in the Film Club, and I'm glad I've seen it now. Watch right through the credits as well at the end, as it has stories to tell.

I don't usually watch classic horror film remakes as most of the time they're dog shit but this wasn't too bad. 6/10.
