Xmen Apocalypse. Probably the worst Xmen film since the first one. A bit of a shambles really, with a script that seemed thrown together in a weekend. I can't see them making any more as an Xmen collective, or if this is any indication, I would hope not.

Eddie the Eagle (2016) It's such a nice and funny movie. Loved Taron Egerton's and Hugh Jackman's performances and chemistry. If you want to watch a movie that will make you feel good watch this. 7.5/10

I'm curious whether any other film has received this level of a mixed response. I've now read multiple reviews where the comparisons to Mario Bros and particularly Battlefield: Earth have been meted out quite viciously. There's more than just boredom being elicited - it's actually detested - and it's not looking like it's just the ignorant critics with an agenda against video games. But then you have positive reviews from non-players from a certain area of the geek spectrum (your Marvel / Star Wars types), and many fans are absolutely drooling over it.

I can understand why, though. For many, po-faced high fantasy is just about the most nauseating thing imaginable. For others, it's something they love to a point of adopting it into their entire being. I can't really think of a better example for a love/hate genre.

I like the Warcraft games and universe for their unapologetic colourfulness and silliness, but also their commitment to story and character. But then that's within the video game context, where story and character is often not a thing (or so bad it might as well not be). Sometimes it's hard to judge not just how well a story will translate to another medium, but whether a good story in a medium of bad ones will actually hold up in a medium where they're a higher calibre. For eg. The Witcher is often compared to ASOIAF / Game of Thrones, and I'd judge Witcher 3 as having the best storytelling in any game I've ever played, but is it really as good as GRRM? I just don't know, and I've invested a huge deal of time into both. The Arthas story is cited by pretty much everyone as the creme de la creme of Warcraft, and maybe one of the best in all gaming, but would even that be able to get a positive response from the huge number of people who just can't be getting on with what Warcraft is? I think probably not. No matter how well it's executed, Warcraft's decision to go unconditionally all-the-way in a genre that evokes such strong resentment in a great deal of people meant it would never be universally accepted.

Bloody awful film that lacked the humour of the original and took itself too seriously, 4/10.

London Has Fallen.

Thought the first one was half decent, sort of a budget Die Hard in the Whitehouse. The sequel was a bit shit to be honest, with the standard American portrayal of the English and our accents and a shallow script even for a film of this genre. The CGI was piss poor too, some of the aerial explosions on the Thames and London streets looked like they were put together on a £100 PC.

It looked great and I enjoyed the battle scenes. Other than that though I thought it was pretty poor. Not familiar with the source material but it puzzled me a bit when Durotan's voice over at the beginning proclaims that 'for as long as I can remember there has been a war between orcs and humans' then when the war party gets to Azaroth the humans don't even know what orcs are. A strange gripe I agree, but it annoyed me. 5/10

Enjoyable version of the well known tale. Nothing special though. 7/10

To be fair he said "there has been a war between Orcs and Humans for as long as can be remembered, but there was once a time when we did not know who our enemy was..." I think they just put that in there so they could shoehorn in a version of the iconic intro to Warcraft III though. Knowing all the lore and the recognising the Easter eggs I found it relatively entertaining, though the cast was weak I felt and the studio cutting 40 minutes out of the movie didn't help the pacing. I just hope they make enough money to do sequels because this early stuff isn't even close to their strongest stories. The Lich King, Illidan, Sylvannas etc. on screen would be amazing. It almost has too much lore though, because the movie storyline didn't even make it to the end of Warcraft I.

The first film was quality that made me jump as well. I've only seen poor reviews of The Conjuring 2 based on the haunting in Enfield which was brilliantly done on Sky with Timothy Spall last year.

Most James Wan horrors start off well, have a few genuine inventive tricks and scares, but always seem to run out of ideas and in the end resort to using scares from other films we've all seen before, which is a shame.

So, last night I went and watched: Independence Day: Resurgence.

If I had to sum it up in a word, I think the word I'd use would be: Unnecessary.

Bare in mind, as some of you probably know, I am a total ID fanboy. I actually consider it to be in my favourite 10 films of all time, I grew up watching it over and over again and consider it the pinnacle of big budget, special effects heavy blockbuster type movies. There are a lot of these big disaster/GCI heavy movies out there, and most of them get lost in a blur of shittness... Transformers, Battleship, 2012, the list of forgettable, awful movies goes on. Only ID got it right and did it well... and I was always doubtful that they could do it again with a sequel. And if they did a sequel, I always assumed it'd just be another one of those movies to get lost in above mentioned blur of shitness. I was always sort of hopeful they'd do a sequel, but wasn't entirely sure that it'd be able to live up to the original. And no, it could not.

To be fair though, when I first heard they were actually going to do it and then that first (Awful) trailer came out, my hopes were sunk. I was sure it was going to be an absolutely fucking terrible film. The second trailer was better, but I still went in with very low expectations. And in that sense, actually, it surprised me. Because, honestly, it is probably better than most of those types of films. It's still not 1/10th of what the first one was though. It was sort of cool seeing more of that ID world, and those characters and what not, but that was purely because of nostalgia.

So what's wrong with it? Well, it never really felt like a proper "invasion" film, like the first one did. The humans never really felt under that much threat. I know that's odd to say when there's a fucking great spaceship parked over the ENTIRE Atlantic ocean, but it felt like more of a war between two armies rather than a massively advanced race having huge firepower to overwhelm the humans and the humans having to get smart and be resourceful to beat them like in the first one.

And then it starts to go into a bit of a weird, Sci Fi place toward the end...

Really, don't read if you intend to see it... but if you have nothing but a passing interest (because I know a lot of you pitiful idiots somehow think ID is shit)

Basically, they find this last surviving alien whos race converted themselves to Artificial Intelligence a long time ago, who have a planet set up where they take refugees of planets the aliens have destroyed and learn to fight them... they're like the main enemies/universal resistance of the ID aliens. And at the end, when the day is won, they uncover all of this info from it... weapons and shit to fight them, interstellar travel. And it basically looks like it's leading into a sequel where WE are gonna take the fight to THEM in their home planet. DOES THIS REALLY NEED TO HAPPEN?!

Ehhh. I'm less enthusiastic toward this next sequel than I was for this one...

But oh well. It doesn't stop the first one from being fucking awesome. It's a shame they couldn't recreate the magic, but to be honest they were never going to.

The director is gay, but has a history of handling gay characters badly apparently.
