Superb film based on a true story about the first black regiment in The American Civil War. Denzel Washington gave an acting masterclass in what for me was his best performance in all of the films he's been in . 9.5/10.

Some guy did an odd 5 minute piece on this before BBC showed it last night and essentially gave away the plot of the entire film, even showing the final scene. Kind of put me off watching it.

North By Northwest.

Classic Hitchcock film staring Cary Grant as a man mistaken for a spy spends the film trying to evade them.

They don't make them like this any more, 9/10.

As soon as i he started spouting bollocks i flicked channels, if you're going to show a bloody good film why have some arsehole with an agenda giving away the plot for those who hadn't seen this classic film, still that's The BBC for you.

Not a very good exorcism/Devil film with Winona Ryder, Ben Chaplin and John Hurt. There were only 2 incidents that made me jump :ohm: the rest of it was dull and had nothing i hadn't seen before. I will watch The Exorcist (1973) to bring back my faith in horror films as i have seen some shit ones lately. 5/10.

Krampus

A family forgets the meaning of Christmas and is therefore terrorised by a demon called Krampus.

Daft, over the top, pretty bad but also pretty enjoyable. A solid 5/10 for a film that takes no brainpower.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 7: New Nightmare (1994)

Better than I was expecting, particularly as it was a bit of a spin-off, non-canon affair (albeit Craven directed).

7/10

That's the end of my Elm Street affair until I get round to watching the Friday the 13th films and then finish off both series with Freddy vs Jason.

Looks a bit dated now but it's still a damn fine film with a few laughs thrown in, my favourite line was "Your mother sucks cocks in hell" 9/10.

Ohayô (Good Morning) (1959)

Two young Japanese brothers with a penchant for farting on cue (they have friend who tries the same but shits himself instead) take a vow of silence in protest at their parents' decision not to buy them a television. A film about television and it's effect on Japanese culture and traditional customs.

Don't Blink

Ten friends visit a secluded resort and begin to disappear one by one. It's a fairly interesting story and keeps you hooked until the end, but then it tells you nothing, effectively allowing the viewer to construct their own answers.

Not sure whether to start this here, in the Politics threads or in the new History thread. Last night, we watched a French film that I'd recorded off Sky Arts a few months back and we ended up talking about it more than any film that we've seen for ages.

Caché (Hidden)

Story of a wealthy Parisian family torn apart when they start receiving videotapes of their house, accompanied by crude, violent drawings. Daniel Auteuil plays Georges Laurent, presenter of a successful literary talk show on TV; Juliette Binoche is his wife, Anne, who works for a publishing house run by an old friend, Pierre. The couple have a 12-year-old son, Pierrot, who competes for his school swimming team. But someone wants to upset this idyll, forcing Georges to unearth a dark secret hidden in his past and buried in his psyche.

I'd describe it as slow paced and not particularly memorable but there were two elements that got us talking.

The first relates to the ending and "whodunnit?" - we've since discovered that it also got everyone talking at the time of release.

The second is just that they mentioned in passing that one of the key characters became an orphan because his Algerian parents had gone to Paris for a demonstration and along with over 200 others been killed by the police in the 1961 Paris massacres!!!

Despite being around in the1960s, neither of us had heard of this and when we did a bit of research we were astounded to discover the level of cover up that was (and has been since) achieved.

I wouldn't mind betting that very few (if any) of you had heard of the 200 - 300 Algerians killed by the French Police and members of "Special Republican Security Companies," in Paris in October 1961, particulary on 16 October when 30,000 Algerians were demonstrating against an 8.30 p.m curfew for muslims in Paris and there were Pinnochet style killings and disappearances managed by a right-wing Paris Police Chief who was convicted of war crimes a couple of years later for his role in sending jews to the camps from Vichy France.

We're now looking for some of the few books that touched on the issues, including a 1963 novel, The Stone Face, by William Gardner Smith.

Enjoyed this. The characters are relatable and the film is a timely reminder that a "rules are rules" ethos can lead to some absolutely perverse situations when it comes to welfare provision.

That said, a couple of scenes didn't really ring true to me. Particularly the one in the food bank.

I get what Loach is doing and TBF he's not shy about it. But I thought he was too eager to ram home the message that people are fundamentally good and it's systems/processes that keep people down and make them miserable. I do wonder whether he'd have felt differently if he'd worked in the job centre for a month and seen time wasters coming in day after day.

Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

Excellent sequel. Pretty much the perfect slasher film. I just wish they didn't have to
show Jason's face at the end.

Spoiler there - because it's such a recent film

Watched Imperium last night. A FBI agent (Daniel Radcliffe) goes undercover in neo nazi organisations and try to uncover a terrorist plot.

This film was actually quite good as long as you can ignore some of the plot holes. Solid acting and moved at a decent pace. Radcliffe and the rest of the crew were quite decent. 7/10.

I watch Man vs Snake, which is a bit like King of Kong and Chasing Ghosts. For those who don't know, they're about the competitive arcade gamers from "The Golden Age of Gaming". In this one, the first billion point scorer on Nibbler tries to beat the record again 30 years later. It's really great, the characters in these stories are what make it.

Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982)

Another very good sequel. This one featured a bad-to-the-bone motorbike gang and some complete stoners. We also see Jason's hockey mask introduced in this one.
