The more you think about it, the more it seems plausible. They attempted the coup at the most random of times, it didn't seem particularly widespread, they didn't seem to have much support from the population, there wasn't much organisation. Entirely possible this was a scheme by the government to force out certain individuals in the military and further undermine their authority.

I'm pointing out that the rebels, that WE have backed, that Cameron etc when the Syria bombing vote was happening, described as 70,000 moderates who we could be on side with, are instead the lowest of the low.
