was there not something along the lines of them being more of a weapon what with the handle and being heavier they could inflict more damage on a person if used as such ? Something in the back of my mind about that. Either that or I dreamed it.

Even here in Germany where we are more familiar with the milliliters, gramms and so on, nobody gives a fuck and orders 330ml of beer (normal size) or (especially in Bavaria at the Oktoberfest) 1 liter of beer which is a "Maß (Mass)" (ok, before the metric system a "Mass" was 1.069 liter, now it's only 1 liter )

Or if we drink "Weizen" (wheat-beer), we order sometimes a "Stiefel (boot)" which is a very old tradition and can't even be measured in ml


and they know what we mean!

I was in the UK for 3 months this year and the pineapple glass (handle) is still popular in certain parts of Surrey & Kent - tweed jacket & cordaroys territory - I prefer my ale in a tulip glass.

There are still pubs that do them type of glasses. Two of my locals offer them, they've got metal & even porcelain ones too but I think those have been put behind the bar by customers.
