Probably been better quality football played by both teams but given the conditions that was more than understandable. That said I found that to be very entertaining. Cullen looked really sharp when he came on.

Thought we should have won that, but pleased with the performance overall, however one up front at home doesn't work well. On another day we might have made more of our chances, and put a better last ball in. Northampton are a big physical side which should see them do well in this league, however they ran the risk of a red card more than once today. The officials were typical league 2 bizarre.

Finally it was good to get a decent crowd which was just short of 6k.

Onwards to that northern pub team next week, with all tickets sold already for away fans.

Thought we had the better of it bar 10 minutes towards the end of the first half. We had loads of chances second half but the ball just didn't quite run.

Where do they get these referees from? He gave a very debatable corner and then not long after he gave a corner which led to Northampton's goal. I'm mystified as to where he saw a touch as it was just a scuffed shot! He then preceeded to make bizarre decisions against both teams in the second half and how Northampton haven't had at least a man sent off I have no idea. As bad as you'll get.

Anyway, we've played two teams expected to be up there. We matched Colchester last week and were the better team today. I'm reasonably pleased with that.

Northampton play to their strengths. Lots of tall players and play off the percentages. Quite physical and I expect it will work well against some of the lesser teams. Not sure whether it's going to be effective enough to be a promotion challenge but they looked reasonably organised in the main. The strange tactic of having two men around a corner is odd. Surely you want to have as many people as possible in the box? Seems a waste.

About the only thing I will really be critical of is giving away the equaliser off a corner right on half time. Leaving aside it was a bad decision to give it someone has switched off which is very disappointing particularly at that stage of the game. Oyeleke tweaking his hamstring was unfortunate also, hopefully it’s ok as we need him.

Other than that I thought some of the combinations involving Crookes, Amoo and Conlon on the left and Gibbons and Worrall on the right were excellent. We played with a lot more energy than this time last year and tactically everyone knew what they were doing. Overall very encouraging.

Based on today I expect there won’t be much between us and the Cobblers come May, it was a real battle and they are very big units and physical, quite cynical and solid.

Thought we were solid too and thought Crookes and Amoo did well and Wozza tormented them as he did at Sixfields.

Solid start, we look better than last year.

Just got home, VAR we win that game .
If they are promotion contenders I'm a Dutchman. Though it's early days granted

Surely have to go 2 up at home. Sacrifice Joyce or Conlon. Amoo and Worrall out wide.
Content that we played ok. Two sides to every story but the referee was truly shocking.

Thing is the twat was openly laughing at the bycars end .

Finally Mr Smith was not content with goading the bycars after the equaliser but he had to spit in Vale fans direction.
You fucking donkey piece of shit

Not quite sure how we haven't won that.

Northampton just hoofed it to Smith all afternoon.

Two solid draws to start with. Carabao Cup action next on Tuesday night.

They had a spell just before half time when they knocked it around and a couple of moves second half and looked better doing it, problem is when you have a unit up top similar to us with Pope you often get drawn into lumping it... under Page we did that with Popey.

As far as 1-1 draws go, that was an entertaining game.

Thought Amoo and Worrall stood out the most on the whole. Expected more from Pope but he was quite anonymous, especially first half.

From where I was sat, didn't look like a corner in a million years. Don't miss League 2 officials in the slightest. Where do they get these incompetent fools from!?

Vale were the better side and deserved to win but my thoughts walking away from the stadium were that I've just watched two bang average midtable League 2 sides who will still be in this division next August.

That will be a relief after the last few seasons and is probably our aim.

The referee was in the National League until this season. Says it all.

I sit Bycars and there were two horrific corner decisions within minutes of each other.
First when Smith shepherded the ball out , Warburton even ran back . The linesman gave that one. The corner the ref gave for the goal was appalling, no appeals from any Cobblers player .
That said you still have to defend the corner.
Two weeks running we have conceded right on half time.
Fair result with us the more likely winner

Having seen a still of the tackle on Conlon right on half time it looks even more a red than what it did at the time and I thought it was then! Both feet and one about a foot off the ground. We do get em! Guess it’ll be another letter of apology to file after the 6 last season!

I was at the front, right behind the 'tackle' and wouldn't have been surprised if he had been red carded, especially in the time the referee was struggling to get it out of his pocket. Agree, we/he got away with that.

It's all been said in this thread and the most accurate comment came from the Shrews fan.

Worried about Pope and our misuse of him. Thought it might be different this season with Cullen and Bennett waiting in the wings but apparently Pope is still untouchable.

The best and most effective use of him in the past 12 months was at home to Crewe last season. We'd huffed and puffed but not finished them off (much like Saturday) and we introduced Pope on 65. It's the last thing they wanted at that stage of the match and we duly went on to win comfortably. I'd love to see him used more like that this season.

thats pretty much how I see it. He achieved little on Saturday. I would like to see another forward come in before the window closes and use Tom as a super sub.

I thought as i think i said at Half Time on here we were too much 4-5-1 than actual 4-3-3 with Worrall and Amoo not supporting him enough when we did get drawn into the longer ball game, once Cullen came on we looked far more dangerous and should of won it as he was more in support, think we seemed more 4-4-2 at that point as well.

At home we should make Northampton/whoever we play worry about us rather than be negative and get two up top, or at least a more attacking single striker set up.

We've got two though Buxton, Bennett is built like the Pontiff and Cullen is a quality striker for this level when fit (as he seems to be currently).

Cullen didn't impress me much on Saturday, its early days but I would still like another option in there.

Looks as though Keith Curle has caused some stir with the Vale fans, press and staff with his WWE comments..

Leon Legge has been quite vocal on twitter tonight adding him to Artell!

Also add they should have had 1 sent off if not 2.

The second one on Manny is bad, saw that one last night by Smith I think. They did the dirty stuff which I guess they’d say was decent away tactics I guess.
