I meant that the BBC is probably the most politically correct organisation in the country, and they spend so much time worrying about it, that they forget to give the licence payers what they actually want

They've got a bit of a rep to fix tbf

Talking about the Olympics, it will have more Clare fucking Balding sprouted throughout it. No doubt they'll try and throw in old Mary effin Berry as well just for kicks.

"The UK's TV audience for the Olympic opening ceremony peaked at 26.9m, the BBC has said.
The average viewing figure for Friday's four-hour show was 22.4m, making it the UK's 13th most watched programme ever."

A once in every 4 years event. I am talking about the things that used to be on the protected free to air list that are no longer covered. Meanwhile, while this country is getting ever more obese, the BBC come up with more fucking cookery programmes, or something else called 'The Great'

Those things are relatively cheap to make, and popular. Sports broadcasting rights are expensive. The BBC is under big financial pressure so they need to cut costs. Hope that helps.

I don't think the food department of the BBC are at fault for national obesity. Most cookery programmes are obsessed with" healthy" eating. Tedious and mind numbingly boring but it's not exactly " better burgers for fatties" is it?

I know, but do we really need so many property shows, antique shows, baking shows and the poor mans X factor?
(I am aware the Voice is going to ITV btw)
Not to mention spending shit loads of money moving lock stock and barrel to Salford

We certainly don't. But as has been mentioned these shows are cheap . Lose cash auction in the attic and you gain Diagnosis Murder. Looking at folk wandering around car boot sales or Dick van Dyke ?
The Voice looks amazing now doesn't it? :ffs:

The BBC don't determine which sporting events are "listed". As a public service broadcaster facing budget cuts it's hardly sensible for it to be getting into bidding wars with deep-pocketed commercial rivals for events which are no longer protected.

The much derided cookery and property shows are both relatively cheap to produce and have widespread appeal. A few too many people seem to believe that the corporation should exclusively produce content that *they* want to watch - that's a rather unenviable task for a broadcaster.

The much derided cookery and property shows may have 'widespread appeal' , but mainly within a certain demographic.
IMHO there just isn't enough balance, and it is only going to get worse. Thank goodness for ITV4

I love the Sherlock Holmes series. I have the box set but still watch them on ITV when they appear.

13 million watched Great British Bake Off last year. I guess it's worth wasting money for that amount of people.

I expect they only watch it as the rest of the tv shows on at the same time are even more shit than baking shows which tells you how bad the rest is.

I don't think that's how it works. It's a simple format which people enjoy, just because you don't like it doesn't mean everyone else in the country is the same.

I doubt you get the highest viewed programme of the year because it was the best of a bad bunch on at the time.

I only started watching it because of my wife (she loves baking) but I really enjoy it now and would probably still watch even if she wasn't there.

Seen it rumoured that the BBC might be releasing a subscription network. They've pulled Sherlock Holmes and Dr Who from Netflix and Hulu today. Could be a good way of raising more funds.

I would rather watch my fingernails grow than watch someone cook something the majority of us would not try cooking, at least Keith Floyd was funny!

I fucking detest cooking/food programmes but GBBO is outstanding television, even if Paul Hollywood is an obnoxious twunt.

2/3 of a like Tom. The first bit and the last bit.

Aye they are brilliant, Brett was the best Holmes and there has been some good ones over all these years. I go back to them every few years myself when there isn't much on. Have the books there too, but the series is better when I cant be arsed reading them! :D

Was watching the Beeb news earlier today and they had a 91-year-old veteran from the Home Guard moaning about the latest Dads Army film saying he wouldn't watch it and it was disrespectful to them. I bet he moaned about it fifty years ago when the series came out as well. I shouldn't criticise a guy who served in WWII, but he was just moaning for the hell of it imo, went into the interview with the wrong attitude, saw that the film and series weren't really mocking them, and just took them for the pleasant bit of fluff they are.
