I don't know if you're aware but some Championship footballer is about to come out as 'openly gay' and is putting it all over social media.
Do you really give a shit? Is it anything to do with football etc etc?
Some bloke is gay, righto, get on with the football.
Why the social media build up?
I genuinely couldn't care less!

Still doubtful of its legitimacy.

However, if it is true then I’ve got more of an issue with them being an attention seeking twat than being gay to be honest.

Why not just come out? The weeks and months that follow will be boring enough as it is but now it has be spoken about a week or two in advance aswell.

I am surprised no-one has outed hin by now anyway unless its all fake.

As you guys suggest 99% of fans won't care - be a few idiots out to give him stick of course though.

Might not matter to you, but it would be a huge deal to LGBT folk. Not sure about the "build up" though, just do it.

It just seems so staged, I've no issue with anyones sexuality, live and let live, waint mean i won't call em a pansy if they feign injury mind.

In this day and enlightened age should we care, yeah maybe football needs a high profile player coming out whilst still playing at a decent level to erode any lingering bigotry but just do it if you feel that strongly, don't set up a social media account to tell folk about you wanting to tell folk you're gay.

Exactly this.

The whole idea is to make being gay no big deal yet this is being made into a huge deal with the build up etc. Good luck to whoever it is, just don't think its the right way to go about it.

I remember it being stated on twitter after an England friendly a few years ago that one of the squad members was going to come out as gay on the Monday after and it never happened, so definitely a pinch of salt.

If it is true, good on him to show the bravery and finally accepting themselves for who they are. But I agree, it doesn’t need the build up. You’re not any different or more special compared to other members of the LGBTQ community.

Wonder if Andy Townsend would start referring to him as the homosexual on co commentary.

One thing that maybe has been overlooked in this, is that it is Jim White who is/has broken the story.

I do not believe that he is doing this for altruistic reasons, and speaking with a friend who is a Blackburn Rovers fan he is not too popular with them after his handling of the Venky's.

The media are only interested in hit pieces, upvotes and rates - which is why I dispensed with the idiot box a long time ago.

If somebody is homosexual, heterosexual, bi-sexual or asexual that is their business and I will not feign an interest just to virtue signal or get good person points.

I most certainly haven’t overlooked that. He’s not popular down here either as he consistently gives our owner a platform to spout shit unchallenged on his show.

The bloke is a buffoon and is probably being played by some spotty teenage oik.

Two possibilities:

1) It's a hoax
2) The player in question is putting feelers out to see what the response might be before coming out

My money's on hoax, that what TomPNE94 is saying about the Reading fan? It doesn't seem like a way anyone would actually choose to come out, even in the relatively homophobic world of professional football. The fact that most people's immediate reaction is that this is just being built up for publicity is fairly predictable.

Wondered how long it would be when it was insinuated that people who questioned it are homophobic.

Apologies if I’ve misinterpreted what you’re saying but that’s how it reads to me.

I think it’s fairly natural that someone coming out, in a fairly “macho” sub culture like football is a big deal and would generate significant press and publicity.

That is a pretty big deal simply because of its rarity, and would be a very brave thing to do given we all know some of the people that are around the fringes of many clubs can be less than welcoming to people who are different. That someone would feel able to do that and hopefully lead the way for others to be able to do the same rather than feel they have to keep themselves closed off from who they really are is very noteworthy.

People can say who cares and that is pretty fair, it likely wouldn’t matter to them as most of us probably just care about our teams doing well regardless of any sexual orientation, colour or any differences, but it would likely matter a great deal to hell of a lot of people involved in football whether as a fan or working in the game who don’t feel able to do the same and be open with who they are because of that fear of ridicule, or just steer well clear of the game in general because of the perceived barriers.

In this case though it does very much feel like someone playing it up for publicity, the fact it’s being trailed on social media is a little odd and it does have the faint whiff of a hoax about it which is a shame.

Totally misinterpreted, but it seems like you were waiting for the opportunity to accuse someone of calling you homophobic.

My point was that you'd never pick this as a way of coming out because you'd know it would only make your coming out seem insincere.

It would certainly come across as an opportunistic stunt the more it rolls on, especially given how sections of the LGBT community are still treated here, but even more so abroad.

If it is genuine then it’s extremely ill thought out.

Yeah, that’s what I was doing
Would never miss out on a great opportunity like that!

You said the football world is homophobic then followed it up with people not believing it was predictable. It read a bit like an insinuation to me, but wasn’t sure hence me saying so at the end of the post.
