I hated Ed, Edd and Eddy.

My little sisters loved it but it annoyed the fuck out of me. That and Dexter's Lab

I hardly remember Ed, Edd n Eddy to be honest. I remember liking it but its been a long, long time since I've seen it. On the other hand, how dare you criticize Dexters Lab.

Mine.

Short anime series by Satoshi Kon, late and pretty great auteur bod behind Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress etc. Strange stuff is happening in Tokyo and folks are getting walloped by a lad on rollerblades armed with a baseball bat. Standalone episodes that tie back together as it goes on.

Nothing has ever been written about Kon that didn’t include the term "Lynchian", and rightly so. He puts his own spin on things, but in terms of
tone and recurrent themes it's an obvious point of influence. Perhaps a little less so here than in some of his other things, actually, but still... identity, self as a construct of the gaze of others, the blurring of fantasy and reality, outward manifestations of mental/emotional disquiet.

One thing - it was a bit of a pisser to watch as a non-Japanese speaker. It’s dense with written info and bits of wordplay that require explanation, so the fan subbed version i watched was more like annotated than subtitled. I was pausing it every 2 mins to read it all the first time I watched it. That's more praise than criticism though, I reckon.
Yeah that's the one I watched too. I think it was either that or English dubbed when I downloaded it. It is useful, but some of it is a tad unnecessary. Explaining idioms and things that would otherwise be lost in translation is great, but a character is walking past a poster for a supermarket or a film we don't really need to know what it says. Especially when they pop up at the same time as the dialogue subtitles. Cut those ones out though and I'm all for it. It's the only thing I've seen that uses this device in tandem with English subs. Loads of Korean subs for English language films and programmes do it and I always wonder why it's not more widely used for English subs.

Don't think I have read anything about Kon (originally watched Paranoia Agent as it was by the aforementioned studio, Madhouse), but the Lynch references definitely hold ground regarding this series. Will be delving a bit more into Kon stuff if I can find it.

Once a brilliant show that all ages could enjoy now has strictly only child friendly humor. They should have just ended it after the first movie.

Seen a few episodes and its good, but I don't think its the best Adult Swim ever that everyone is making it out to be. Its not Aqua Teen Hunger Force

I was a big Pokemon fan when I was young, I played the games, collected the cards and watched the shows but looking back at the show, even the first season, it was total shit. The fact this came ahead of Dragonball Z is embarrassing :ffs:

I hardly remember this show but what I do remember is that it was intended for a much younger audience than a lot of cartoons for kids.
