Just heard some sirens going down the A38. 3 at least. Not sure what has happened but from the sounds of it I can only assume it's fairly bad and to be quite frank I'm actually shaking with vicarious shock. I will keep you all updated.

Reports of an overturned Ocado van at Markeaton junction. The bitter tang of charred hummus hangs in the air like a chickpea storm cloud. Sally and I are both qualified first aiders so we are heading to the scene to see if there is anything we can do to prevent this tragedy from escalating further.

The sight that greeted Sally and I's eyes was like a sight from Bosch (the painter not the Amazon TV series). My friend Susan has lost everything - a burning ciabatta flew through her living room window and ignited the rug. She is devastated. We are a close knit community here in the East Midlands though so we will rally round. Please keep us in your thoughts during this time.

The situation remains febrile. At least one fatality has been confirmed - a Shenston based quantity surveyor was hit in the head by a flying beefsteak tomato. He was killed instantly. It's incredible to think that this drama is playing out just 15 minutes up the road from my very own house.

Little update.

We've currently got a friend staying with us who lived on the 66th floor. Her apartment is in the worst affected area so she's pretty distraught. Contents insurance in Dubai is pretty rare, especially with expats who are renting. .

Flashing blue lights illumine the black heavens above Claymills Junction, just 4 short minutes walk from my very front door. They look like strobe lights from a rave, a rave of death, a rave of death dredged from the appalling imagination of Beelzebub himself. I know not what has happened - I'm not sure if I even want to know. But Pandora's Infernal Box has been opened again here in the once placid East Midlands, and on this special night of all nights. Looks like the tower was made of paper. There'll be fatalities there, no question. Someone on the BBC just now probably jumping the gun, but saying there was a chance it could have been a terrorist attack.

The fireworks were set to take place at the Burj, just up the road.

This one is a bad one! Geographically, this is right at the heart of Downtown Dubai, which is about 20km from my house, which is very close to where the fire earlier in the year took place.

The Address itself is a beautiful hotel and is directly opposite the Burj Khalifa (distance wise around 200m). I reckon the hotel is around 70-80 floors high and looking at some of the videos coming from ground, it looks as though he fire started on the podium level, where there is a very popular bar called Calabar, where people enjoy shisha and drinks while overlooking the Khalifa and the fountains.

From a personal point of view, thankfully all of my friends seem safe and sound, but I would seriously question the reports that say there are no casualties.

According to eyewitni a filly at the Bluecross Horse Rehoming Centre was startled by fireworks, vaulted the fence, and proceeded to canter along Dovecliff Road in scene not unlike that which occurred in the 1997 edition of the Critérium International (immortalised in the film Amelie). At the junction a council gritter was forced to make an evasive swerve to avoid a colliding with the spooked equine, but in so doing smashed into the side of bus packed with festive revellers. Many were killed instantly, and many more irreparably maimed in the subsequent fireball. The bus was the X38 heading to Derby, the very bus I myself have taken on any number of occasions. It scarcely bears thinking about.

It's quite sad that some of you seem to find this a good time to try and be humorous. It doesn't surprise me however. Very easy to laugh at others misfortunes.

This building is a couple of hundred yards opposite Burj Khalifa so it was quite a populated area on NYE. Not sure what happened there exactly but it was still burning the next morning.
