How much did Pablo Counago cost you back in the day? Remember he was decent ... he's still playing too, in Finland under the management of Shefti Kuqi.
We signed him for free (both times). Good player, possibly didn't quite fulfill his potential but I always liked him and it's great he's still playing.
The other players we spent decent money on around that time were Hermann Hreidarsson, Marcus Bent and Finidi George.

Owen at £18M. Can't quite see it this year of all years like.
Couple close with Shearer and Wijnaldum at £15M but can't see us spending a lot this Summer unless we recoup a lot in sales with the likes of the latter there and Sissoko rumoured to be leaving for big money.

Shows the disparity in this division really. That would have been more than our entire budget last season.

I agree but in all fairness that was in an age where Freddie Shepard/John Hall were let loose to spend freely. Under Ashley, apart from the last two transfer windows, we've barely spent a penny and that's really why we find ourselves in the position we are now.

6 million on Bradley fucking Johnson.

I do expect him to live up to his price tag this year tbh.

Andre Gray £6 million (possibly rising to a maximum of £9 million with add-ons for appearances, goals, promotion, PL survival and full England honours).

We might go close to breaking this record, but would not put money on it - probably 3/4 signings of about £4/5 million each this window.

Our highest was 3.5 million on Nathan Ellington - then we found out he was unfit and couldn't train!

:bf:

Think its now Étienne Capoue who we signed for £6.3 million last summer...

was Rob Earnshaw your record transfer before Brad?

Before last summer he was, 3.5 million. We broke our record on Ince last summer in July for 4.2 mill and then later with Brad. Both Brad and Earnie had really good seasons prior to us signing them!

Last year was found guilty of raping his daughter on a 2009 family holiday.

Cheers Wikipedia.

We have paid about 20,00 three times for a player, Russell Peen from Kidderminster in our first season in the league, a similar amount for Billy Kee from Torquay United and again for Lucas Akins from Stevenage a couple of seasons ago and he has been top scorer for the last 2 seasons !
We may possibly pay more for a player this season but don't be surprised if we don't !

When you put it like that, it just shows the challenge you're going to be facing next season. There are clubs in this division that probably have one player on more than all your squad combined, and that's probably not even the parachute payment clubs!

When we came up here our record signing was £50k, and the only player in our promoted squad costing any money was Neil Danns, for about £15k... and we had a superb season! So it can be done.

Yes mate it does show the differences quite markedly, it actually seems to fire our team up for the challenge, we will be the under dog in every game this season home and away and as I have stated previously it will be like the FA Cup 3rd round for us in all 46 games.
We would be delighted just to stay up I think. Almost 50 years following the club and i'm going to enjoy it come what may.

You would think so but don't be surprised if we don't ! Cloughie has his targets, no idea who they are but one thing I guarantee is we won't over spend and will stick to our budget.

Thanks for that, gives encouragement, for what its worth I think it can be done with some shrewd dealings.
Burton Albion a championship club ? It will only sink in when the fixtures come out in a couple of weeks !

I think the Layer Road factor played a big part in the success of that first season, and I'd imagine it's possible you could enjoy the same advantage. Yeovil didn't quite get that benefit though, so it's not nailed on of course haha.

I have been thinking that, the fans are very close to the pitch and on top of the players at the Pirelli. The place should be full and rocking every match.
