See this post I made a while back:

As I said there, for all his failings he has a great attitude, and not long after I made that post he suffered a horrific set of injuries that make it an achievement for him to even be walking now, let alone playing semi pro football, which says a lot about his attitude.

After seeing the pathetic performances our defence have put in this season I would take him back in a heartbeat despite all his flaws.
Thanks doesnt sound so bad! 100% effort is all I ask.

is the FL transfer embargo thing not happening now then? i thought that due to the handout the PL gave to them to cover wages etc, that it was felt that they shouldnt be going out buying players with it, and it would be loans and free transfers instead

That's only if they access the additional loan facility.

The initial grant covered/part covered lost gate receipts.

Apparently we're close to resigning Reuben Reid on a permanent from Cheltenham.

We're being linked with a loan move for young Palace forward Rob Street, if true would suggest Wright is going to be out for a while.

Sounds like another departure from Gloucester City to Chesterfield, and people aren’t particularly happy about it by the looks of his wiki:

“Alex Whittle (born 15 March 1993) is an English semi-professional mercenary footballer who last played as a left-back for Gloucester City.”

It appears our transfer strategy at the moment is to cherry pick the best players from the national league north..

I know he was really highly thought of at Boston before joining Gloucester, however it will be another left back to which we already have 2 player in that position (Taylor and Buchanan)

If this signing happens I would expect that’s the end of the road for Buchanan, who’s been a great professional in his time with us but definitely lacks the physicality required to play in a James Rowe team I think

Wasn't there an agreement with Rowe not to poach Gloucesters players? Or did I make that up?

Agreement was to not approach any ‘contracted’ Gloucester players...

Apparently Whittle has paid off his own contract in order to be released from it (highly likely his next club paid this fee mind...) which is similar to what Carline did before joining us.

Not the most ethical way of doing things but as we all know, ruthless business is football.

Looks like Bromley have signed Charlie Wakefield from Wealdstone, another non contract player leaves. He has pace and trickery but very little belief and end product.

Judging by the Bromley press release, he was released by the Stones and they snapped him up quickly. Nowhere near good enough for this level. Looked like an average NLS player at best.

As I posted elsewhere believe the FA have now been informed. This is clearly an illegal approach and these players no doubt are "paying off" their contracts thanks to subsidies let's say from "elsewhere". As Aldershot fans have alluded to previously, James Rowe has previous for this kind of dealing.

Highly doubt there is anything the FA can do. If Whittle pay’s off his contract which he has done, he’s no longer your player.

I genuinely have sympathy for you guys, it’s something all fans of lower league clubs have experienced and it’s never nice seeing good players move on, especially in this manner.

As I’ve said previously though, I really think it’s a strange one given we’re well stacked at LB already. I’d much prefer to see us trying to improve our goalkeeper situation than stockpile at full back!

Wouldn't be against signing Buchanan. Tolaji Bola, the young LB we had on loan from Arsenal, has returned to his parent club; of the alternatives, first year pro Joe Dunne is yet to start a game; Jim McNulty is a centre-back by trade; Matt Done is a forward by trade. So although it may seem daft for a L1 club to sign a player surplus to requirements two divisions lower, he might be worth a go. Especially as he's a Rochdale lad by birth.

The key here is how he's paid his contract off.

The level of the game we’re talking about here I can’t see the FA doing anything about it, sadly for you lot.

They’ve never really been fussed about football outside the PL, never mind below the FL!! So for them to spend time and money on an investigation into a non league player paying off his own contract, during the middle of a pandemic whilst there’s much more pressing issues going on in football... would be very surprising IMO

From what you’ve put there, it would make total sense to make a move for him. He’s never ever let us down and defensively he’s always been solid enough.

The only issue is obviously his age affecting his physical capabilities to maraud up and down the left flank as a wing back, which is how Rowe wants our left sided player to play.

Pretty sure we had Alex Whittle on trial last pre-season. Didn't do enough to earn a contract with us so I'd hope for your sake he's improved!

Can only say from NLN level but both at Boston and when he was with us he was decent. Far better player than Carline. Very hard worker, but he can be caught out of position because he likes to get forward.

Another day... another signing imminent!

Can’t say I’ve heard of the lad but another midfielder coming in means were surely going to see a number of players leaving either on loan or permanently very soon. If I had to guess I’d say it’s likely to be a number/all of the following:

Joe Rowley
Jonathon Smith
David Buchanan
Tyler Denton
Jack McKay
Nathan Tyson

Does it not worry you that you seem to be adopting a boom or bust strategy in a season where we might not see a finish, most other clubs are being careful and trying to survive but you are just spend spend spend.

The difference now is that we’re being ran by competent business people at the football club who genuinely care and are lifelong fans, so I don’t think there’s any real ‘worries’ from the fan base as we trust them to make decisions and spend within our means that won’t harm the future of the club.

I also think that with these lads coming in, there surely must be some things going off in the background in regards people moving out so that wages are free’d up for these lads that are coming in.

This turnover of players was always necessary and I’m glad it’s happening sooner rather than later personally. For too long that same core group of players that were here when JR walked through the door had failure after failure behind them whilst being at the club. That losing mentality had to go and it’s good to see that finally being addressed...

I think a lot of the fans of ex Football league teams that have spent a few years at this level know all about being took to the cleaners by crooks who run clubs for their own ends, that’s how we all ended up here in the first place and once here it’s a bugger to get back out.

Salford must have a huge player turnover - I’m certain they must have let a whole squads’ worth come back down the NL in the past year?

I mean Salford literally will sign a player for a six figure transfer fee and release them within a year. Shambles.
