League One was stronger when you went up, can't dispute that. You did excellently to go up.

I really don't think your squad was as immense as you make out mind. Most of that side are now playing at a lower level and don't forget Revell was leading your line that season. I'd put your success more down to excellent management and impressive loan signings.

Finally a sane Bristol City fan.

Not most of that side, Arnason is at Malmo (champions league this season), Pringle at Fulham, Agard at you, Tavernier at Rangers (shit division but big big club), Frecklington and Smallwood are stil with us, Vuckic signed a new 5 year deal with Newcastke not long back and Revell is still (shockingly) in the championship.

I think most teams that do well and overachieve in L1 do so because the team gels and forms something better than its parts. Most of the players from our L1 teams that finished 3rd and 2nd who have moved on haven't done very well:

Trotta - stuck in the lower leagues in Italy
Forshaw - clearly still has talent, but has spent all of the time since leaving on Wigan and Boro's bench
Craig - back in L1 for Millwall
Forrester - playing for Rangers now, wasn't doing very well in L1 when back there with Donny either
Moore - not even sure who he is playing GK for now

Not particularly surprising, a lot of the time in L1 if a player does well it's mainly because the tactics suit him. If he's good enough to be great in any team he'll have been snapped up by a PL / Top of the Championship side already.

Rotherham had a great team. Maybe not so many great individuals, though they did have a few cracking players, Agard was brilliant that season, Tavernier was a massive driving force behind their 2nd half of season form, Pringle had a couple of great games against us (where even is he these days? Fulham?), think they had Smallwood back then as well? No doubt there was some excellent management in there, but I'd back the squad they had that year against the squads that are doing well in L1 now.

Apologies for the slightly rambling post!

My man.

Seems only a select few Yokels and Mkat fans have major objections to my views.

I'm not disagreeing that League One was stronger in 13/14, I'm disagreeing that you had a better team in 13/14 when we got 4 points off of you with a terrible team, then went up with an insanely better team the next year, Lewis Baker, Dele Alli, Afobe, Grigg, Carl Baker, Rob Hall, McFadzean, Spence were all unbelievable last year, and we've now come up, gone halfway through the season with a team worse off than last seasons and (albeit only just, and only at the moment I'm expecting it to change on Saturday) are above you who have already been here a year and know what it's about

Mate you live in Scotland, nothing you say about Rotherham could ever change that horrifying fact.
What he said.

Not disputing the quality of the league, disputing the quality of your team.

My whole point was that league one was far stronger in 13/14 than last year.

It's a good post. I disagreed with SERNWA that they had an excellent squad (we had Agard and Tavs last season and they were nothing special with us). But that's not to say they weren't brilliant that season.

I'd still back that Rotherham squad to win it this season by a stretch mind, League One is as dire now as I've ever known it. Walsall have near enough the same team that we beat 8-2, and they're 2nd..

Was still a good standard at the top last year though really good battle right the way through between us, Preston, MK and Swindon. The Rotherham of 13/14 definitely wouldn't have walked it last season but they'd have been up there.

 Bit touchy there kid.

Thankfully it's just work. I get to go 'home' to the paradise of North East Derbyshire.

I love Rotherham United and the town, i know its a shithole but it's my shithole, so I'll stick up for it at every opportunity.

13/14 was easily the strongest league 1 has been for years, Wolves had 1 of the best squads outside the premier league, Brentford had a decent side which they proved the following year finishing in the playoffs in the championship, and then it was a lottery of us, Preston, Peterborough and Leyton Orient who were all capable of winning the playoffs and luckily it was us, you could add Sheff Utd to that list aswel who probably would have had a better league season if they didnt get far in both cup competitions. Last seasons league 1 wasn't a poor standard but it wasn't a patch on the season before. This seasons league 1 however is the worst ive ever seen, i think any team in the championship including us and Bolton would walk this seasons league 1 with the current squads, Burton being the top says it all.

When you say the strongest league one in years, how far would you go back?

Because 09/10 was far, far stronger and I would say 11/12 was on par when we won it.

The strongest L1 I can remember is that 09/10 year. Norwich, Leeds, Charlton, Southampton, Millwall, Swindon, Huddersfield were all excellent sides that year with many players who've gone on to play regular top flight football.

Looks like we were gonna sign Ryan Gauld on loan from Sporting Lisbon but they said no last minute.

That season when Doncaster won the league and Yeovil won the play-offs was rancid.

Even Bournemouth were utter shite for 60% of the season.

The worst thing was that Westley was getting us relegated from it until we potted him and Grayson steadied the ship, think we finished 15th in the end.

Yeah 09/10 was very strong. The fact we only just scraped up with an excellent squad said it all.

Some familiar names in the top scorer charts...

1 Rickie Lambert Southampton 30
2 Billy Paynter Swindon Town 26
3 Jermaine Beckford Leeds United 25
4 Lee Barnard Southampton/Southend Utd 24
Grant Holt Norwich City 24
6 Steve Morison Millwall 21
7 Charlie Austin Swindon Town 20
8 Jordan Rhodes Huddersfield Town 19
9 Chris Martin Norwich City 17
10 Ian Harte Carlisle United 16

Fucking Paynter and Austin on fire and we go and sign the former, the bloody weapon.

The final day of that season was ridiculous. Leeds, Millwall, Swindon and ourselves all occupied second spot at some stage during that afternoon. Mental.

Think we started the final day 3 places clear of the bottom 4 and ended up in it!

Aye it was bonkers. I'll never forget it. Was down at the Valley the week before and at one point only needed a goal to clinch promotion...which would have been awesome in that away end. Went and conceded late in typical fashion, but ultimately we needed to win on the final day whether we'd have drawn or lost at Charlton so it made little difference.

Those seven days didn't half drag though between fixtures...and then the day itself...fuck me.

Was that the one when Beckford scored against Bristol Rovers?

Think so.

Remember that day vividly, going to Oldham thinking we had no chance given everything that needed to happen.

We were 2-0 up with Millwall and Swindon drawing when news filtered through that Rovers were beating Leeds and Leeds had 10 men. Great scenes.

Then of course, Leeds and Millwall both won and we lost in the play-offs! Great season though.
