Depends how. To be honest, I’m more in the Jones camp here. All you’re doing is developing a player for someone else who can be recalled in January if doing well. There’s only limited upside.

I’ve said before that each team who develops a loan player for someone else should receive 1% of the next sale transfer fee for every 30 days at the club, in the same way as a sell on clause. Would also stop teams stockpiling talent and it filtering down somewhat, increase the longevity of careers and actually improve the quality of the lower leagues.

Sake of argument - Luton and Blackpool both held Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for 300 days each. If he leaves for £40M this week, both clubs would receive £4M each because they were vital to his development.
Agree on being on the Jones side of this, feels like it’s a longer term better investment to invest in your own players than someone else’s. KDH was I think a bit of a special case where he knew that team probably needed one top class player to keep it in the league, and he took an opportunity in the covid era to get one. Having 3 potentially key players as loanees feels excessive imo.

I like the idea, although as with all these things I’d worry about what unforeseen incentives it produces, could see it having an inverse effect of clubs not wanting to loan players out at all.

Alan Browne officially gone.

Signed at 18 and made 400+ appearances. Quite sad really, seems like he's been fucked about.

Sheff Utd & Coventry were rumoured to be interested but I hope he goes abroad. Good Championship midfielder who would be an asset in any squad at this level, especially high-pressing teams.

We were linked with Marc Leonard, but supposedly he's on a massive wage at Brighton, hence why he's available for a small fee.

We also were linked with a loan move for Lewis O'Brien but he'll have better offers.

Adam Phillips at Barnsley seems most realistic. Not sure what kind of money we'd be talking for him. £1.5m-£2m I'd guess, similar to Whiteman.

Signed Sammy Silvestra on loan from Middlesbrough. Quick winger we tried to sign last summer from the ozzie leagues. Got some pace on the wings with him and Josh Murphy

Great player, probably the best I’ve seen in my lifetime play for us. If he’d have been at a bigger club than us and had the season he had I’ve no doubt he’d have been in the England squad, and my goodness they’ve looked like they need a player like him to pick the ball up from the defence and progress from deep.

Hope he does well and continues a career renaissance.

I really like Phillips, think he would be a good signing at this level as would Luca Connell from Barnsley.

In terms of the quality in League One, honestly there isn’t a great deal in both boxes but there’s plenty of decent midfielders. Leonard was decent for Northampton, doubt the rumour about his huge wages would be true, maybe he’s asking for good money but he’s been on loan at Northampton the past two seasons, initially League Two. I doubt he was ever in the pipeline for the first team, how many genuine Premier League prospects see League Two? Very few. Therefore, I doubt his wages at Brighton were ever daft. I think there is a low asking price potentially to use him as a case study to attract young players as an example how they look after their players best interest over their own commercial gain. When you compare his development through the Brighton academy to Jack Hinshelwood (for example) it’s very different and I’d imagine the investment in them both would’ve been very different.

Signed a contract extension in 2023. Brighton are an established Premier League club, so him being on £20k a week isn't unrealistic at all.

Not a massive wage for this level but it is for the sides being linked to him. Sounds like he's going to Birmingham who are gambling on an instant return.

Maybe you're right, but I'm not sure how a decent season in League Two and a loan to the same team, albeit following promotion earns him £1m per annum contract which would've made him the highest paid player in League One. I don't think he was ever in that ball-park. Brighton aren't adverse to paying young players well, but just seems completely unnecessary and I don't have Brighton down as a team who act so needlessly.

There was a lot of talent in the central midfield position in League One last season, though. We struggled for the vast majority of the season in that area with Korey Smith, Max Bird and Conor Hourihane - it wasn't until we signed Ebou Adams who addressed the balance that we held our own.

Ethan Erhahon is one to watch, I'm sure he will get a move and I suspect that he could be a fairly special player at this level in the right team. He has a ton of potential.

Peter O'Rourke claiming we're going to hand 35yr old Jack Cork a deal

No idea if he's still got it, or not, but the short-term-ism of this club is unreal.

Jamie Donley on loan from Spurs has been mentioned, but maybe a shit twitter rumour. England U19 striker. Adam Gilchrist on loan from Chelsea is still doing the rounds too, but I can't see it.

Louie Sibley has left the club, which is a huge disappointment. He was the very best of our team that won the U18 Premier League in 2018/19 and had things been different would've gone on to do amazing things in his career, that I'm absolutely positive about. Understandably, the ones that got away early are the ones worth the most now: Archie Brown, Morgan Whittaker, Liam Delap, Kaide Gordon - Omari Kellyman wasn't part of that group either but got away in good time and benefitted from it.

I'm really not sure what the future holds for him, he was never going to get to his best at Derby - he needs technical coach to get him back on track. He still flashes the potential that he once had and could well be worth a fortune under the right manager/team. I really wish him the very best, someone is going to get a very talented prospect to work with this season anyway.

Jamal Lowe sounds imminent

Polish media saying we are signing a young lad called Olaf Kobacki who Norwich have also been in for

Both announced

Beadle back on loan from Brighton next up for our 7th signing this window

Still a striker, centre back and a couple of centre midfielders short

I see Ipswich want Jacob Greaves. Definitely one of the best CBs i've seen at this level and I could see him representing England at some point.

Two centre backs who have impressed me in a similar way over the years have been Joleon Lescott when he was at Wolves and James Tarkowski for Oldham/ Brentford. Probably others but those 2 spring to mind.

Looks like Luton are in for Shandon Baptistie. Said to be in "advanced talks". That's a good signing for us having lost Sambi and Barkley.

I've seen a little bit of bleating on social media for some Luton fans over the lack of progress we've made in the transfer market. Why? We don't really need to do that much.

And why is that? We did a lot of our recruitment last summer! We already have 26 what I'd call "senior pros" on our books, so some need to leave to make room.

Chieo Ogbene - Irish international, the 2nd fastest player in the PL last year and very much a threat.
Mads Andersen - Signed for £3m and a strong player at this and L1 level.
Tahith Chong - tore Luton apart in 2022.
Marvelous Nakamba - Zimbabwe international, one of those 'in between' players but has a lot of PL experience.
Thomas Kaminski - was at the Euros with Belgium
Jacob Brown - leading player for Stoke at this level.
Tim Krul - bronze medal in the World Cup
Teden Mengi - could play for England in future.
Andros Townsend - has played for England and vastly experienced.
Daiki Hashikoka - Japanese international
Tom Holmes - experienced at this level.

Plus signed before... Carlton Morris (20 goal Champ striker), Cauley Woodrow, Gabe Osho (interesting several top Champ clubs and maybe in the lower PL), Eli Adebayo (10 goal PL striker), Reece Burke (strong Champ defender), Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu (been through all the leagues), Jordan Clark (scored twice v City and at Wembley)... plus Joe Taylor who scored 20 goals in L1 and L2 last season and John McAtee who impressed at Barnsley.

On today's values - as a collective, our squad is probably worth around £120M-£140M.

Sorry for a bit of a ramp, but just thought I'd remind those moaning and groaning in the background... we will do some business, but right now we are incredibly well placed compared to some.

Think this week people have started getting itchy as pre season has started now, plus not been much other news, we only just got the Pre Season schedule sorted.

To the transfer dealing I do think we need a bit more than you do. I think it’s a bit silly of those moaning about lack of dealing on socials etc but I do I understand why to an extent

Signed for us.

I really like the fit, think he will do really well for you.

He’s been chronically mismanaged by us since Cocu left and I think a move was always on the cards, reading between the lines: wage bill - SCMP contribution (of which his, Birds and Knights wages weren’t included). I think he was on serious, serious money at Derby (£15-20k a week) as he signed at his most optimal time and we were still throwing cash about.

Rooney took a sledge hammer to his development and since then he’s struggled get really get back on track and he has has stalled. Obviously, there’s numerous different factors that have gone into it, who knows what his current level of potential is - I do have rose tinted glasses because I saw him perform so well at academy level and was adamant he was going to be an elite player. I watched the u18 final and him and Saka were miles ahead of everyone on that pitch, we won 5-2 and he was almost involved in every goal - including running the length of the pitch to lay off out last goal. He really was some player. He had everything you would want in a prospect.

Shame it’s come to this, but deep down he’s not the right fit for Warne and I think the fact he’s probably chewed up £1m of his first team wage bill over the last two years, without producing a great deal (still steady, mind) probably didn’t lead to the best player/coach relationship.
