We make our much heralded return to league 1 with a glamour tie against the lovely Scunthorpe United . Scunthorpe are missing star man Paddy Madden for the first time in 20 years ( pray for Madden) so I quite fancy us to win this. In fact I can't see past a 1-4 Gas victory. :box::bdick::ds: Etc .....

I have no idea what to expect. Obviously Scunthorpe are favourites, but I fancy Taylor to be the difference and earn us a narrow victory.
My current starting lineup (assuming everyone is fit) would be:
---------------Mildenhall----------------
-Leadbitter-Lockyer-Hartley-Brown-
----Bodin-Lines-Mansell-Moore----
----------Gaffney-----Taylor---------
I feel we need to add a quality CM to partner Lines. Also, a better, younger keeper to replace Mildy.

We had the best home defense record in L1 last season and I can't see us scoring without Madden.

Looking forward to this, even though it's so far away!

I'm confident that we will perform well and rise to the occasion at the start of the new season, but this is definitely one of the toughest fixtures we could have been given on the opening day. I think we can nick a win because we definitely have the players to cause Scunny problems, but a draw wouldn't be a bad result.

Didn't realise Madden is out, so that's a definite positive for us.

Good to see Aber can get a few league 1 bites.

Is anything actually confirmed about Madden being out? I know he's had an injury and not played much in preseason but wouldn't shock me to see him in the line up as I'm sure I hadn't seen anything confirmed.

I feel there's a real unwarranted negativity amongst our fans because we haven't had a massively busy off season, but it's been a great one in my opinion. Kept Taylor, kept Bodin, kept Leads and seemingly improved at CB and LW. Yes, we need a couple more, but we're in good shape. Most importantly, we kept DC. We finished last season with 12 wins in 14 or something along those lines, so we shouldn't be too out of depth, and other fans seem to tell me there's not much difference between L1 and L2.

That being said, I'd definitely take a point away at Scunny. Looking forward to the trip and getting the ball rolling again.

I'd be satisfied with a draw to start off, I'm not expecting a huge amount though. Scunthorpe a very established side at this level now.

Lots of Gas fans seem very confident of beating us, we're not that bad.

It's not a reflection on Scunthorpe BD, I think it's more just the optimism that has been generated from our resurgence over the last two years. It'll be a tough game for us, without a doubt.

I'm slightly concerned about how the centre of our midfield is going to look, but we have players going forward that can hurt teams.

Haha, ignore my opening post. We aren't being disrespectful to Scunny. You did well last season and I expect you to be up there again. We are just being optimistic for a change :bg1:

Thats what I was thinking. It's okay to be optimistic after a couple of promotions but Scunthorpe are far better than any league opposition they will have had over the last two years.

2-0 scunny.

I'm going to go with 0-1 gas win, I think we got a strong defence and also got some dangerous players going forward.

Going for a 2-2 with a 92nd minute equaliser just to carry on where we left off with late goals.

Alexander confirms Madden is out, can't see us scoring at all so we need to keep them out.

I would imagine a little bit but not a massive amount, why do you ask?

Been told from a very good source you put in a bid for a player, £500k-750k ballpark

I actually think over the full spectrum of Rovers fans that most are quite negative about the upcoming season, seems we've just got the positive ones on this thread. I don't think anyone would overlook Scunthorpe, obviously a very good league one side. It's understandable for those who are positive though, back to back promotions would tend to do that to a fan base.

Back on to the game, can see this being a very low scoring affair. With Scunthorpe confirming Madden is out, looking at their squad from last season they didn't have many other big scorers. As many of our fans know, we tend to set up away from home by keeping it as tight as possible in the first half and Scunthorpe sound pretty rock solid at the back (although Luke Daniels didn't exactly make himself a fan favourite on his loan spell to us), so could be a cagey affair. Sounds like a 0-0, 1-0 either way or 1-1 on the cards.

Although with my prediction ability, it'll probably be a 4-3.
