You can understand why people wouldn't like Lambert. He just comes off so boring and dour. Doesn't inspire supporters like say a David Wagner does. He's probably the best man for the job though.

He's a boring motherfucker, but he did damned well to keep our piece of shit side in that division for as many seasons as he did. Should do well, I sincerely hope we haven't broken him as much as it seemed by the time he was sacked.

Yes he could, and no. This is the man who kept Brad Guzan in goal for 3 and half years...

All i ask for is a manager who buys players of quality rather than quantity. Looks at Newcastle, they bought key players for key positions such as Richie and Gayle to improve their already solid team. We sign crap like Ola John and Paul bloody Gladon whom don't offer us anything.

Phillipe Senderos - Free - Decent start, never seen again - Released.
Joe Cole - Free -Utterly awful, sent to Coventry and was still crap in L1 - Released.
Kieran Richardson - Free- Also terrible, stop-gap in many areas and played like crap - Released.
Aly Cissokho - £4million - Meh. Did okay, still doing alright, but still not good enough at this level - Still at club.
Carlos Sanchez - £4.7million - Rubbish, always played well for Colombia, but never showed anything at Villa - On loan at Fiorentina
Carles Gil - £3.2million - Never seen someone so overrated by our fans, lightweight, couldn't keep up. - On loan at Deportivo.
Antonio Luna - £2million - Ah, Tony Moon, great name, shit player. - Released.
Niklas Helenius - £2million - Never really heard from whilst at Villa, an odd one. - Released
Alexandar Tonev - £2.5million - Racist little shitbag shoved off on loan to Celtic after barely playing for us. - Released
Leandro Bacuna - £3million - Utter wanker last season, but in general is alright, a much better Kieran Richardson, can play any where - Still at club
Jores Okore - £4million - Tosser, under the impression he was Champions League quality, showed glimpses of potential, but never lived up to it. - Free transfer to Copenhagen.
Libor Kozak - £5million - Started well, but broke his leg twice, can't be too harsh on the fella, seems to have lost all ability now though. - Still at club.
Jed Steer - Tribunal - Never played, was meant to be Guzan's replacement, but has had a couple of average spells out at Championship clubs, only a back-up keeper though. - Still at club.
Karim El Ahmadi - £2.5million - Useless most of the time, occasional glimpses of quality though - Sold to Feyenoord for £700k
Matt Lowton - £3million - Actually a decent player on his day, better than the right backs we had on offer, but lost his place to Hutton. - Sold to Burnley for £1million.
Ron Vlaar - £3.2million - Decent on his day, but always a mistake in him, another over-hyped player on Villa fans point of view. - Released.
Joe Bennett - £2.5million - Never seen a worse left-back in my life... - Free Transfer to Cardiff.
Jordan Bowery - £500k - Terrible, terrible striker, how the hell Chesterfield convinced us to pay £500k is beyond me. - Sold to Rotherham for £250k.
Ashley Westwood - £2million - Knows how to make a pass sidewards or backwards... Looked better when he signed for the club than he does now! - Still at club.
Cristian Benteke - £10million - Lambert's saving grace. Brilliant player who Liverpool couldn't utilise once sold, doing alright at Palace now. - Sold to Liverpool for £32.5million.
Yacouba Sylla - £2million - Not that awful a player, but I'm not gonna sit here and praise him. Never the quality needed. - Sold to Rennes - £2million.

So, £56.1million spent in 3 years, and not much to show quite frankly, recouped £36.45million, £32.5million of which was on one player...

Filling you with confidence yet?

Was he responsible for those players though? I am in the minority of our fans but I don't think managers should have responsibility for player signing, managers are a short life span thing so allowing them free reign to sign who they want isn't wise, it's better to have a recruitment system and to allow the manager input but not total control, that way when the manager leaves or is sacked you aren't starting from scratch. It also means you can be consistent and try to build long term even with managers being rotated. Southampton are the best example of this domestically.

Not in great detail no. That was Learner yes?
Yup. Went from manager has total control (O'Neill), to less control (Houllier and McLeish) to very little control, but still having the final say and recommendations taken into account (Lambert) to none whatsofuckingever (Sherwood and Garde).

The signings do ultimately fall on Lambert's head unfortunately, unlike Sherwood's 'signings', don't get me wrong, I hope the bloke does well, I hold no animosity towards Wolves or Lambert whatsoever. Hope he comes good, as long as it isn't at our expense of course. :dk:

You can see why that hasn't worked though, massive changes in style from O'Neill, Houllier, McLeish (those two are more similar) through Lambert and Sherwood.

Yup, that, and spending less than £20million average over three Premier League windows (you need to spend minimum £30million to stand still up there most of the time imo) didn't help. People will point to last season where we spent £56.5million in an attempt to stay up, thing is, we bought in £55million, so £1.5million to survive in the league... No wonder we ended up with so few points!

Houllier was completely different to O'Neill and McLeish, I can see why you'd say McLeish and O'Neill are similar, but honestly, O'Neill is FAR more adventurous and attacking (something I never thought I'd say about him) than McLeish. Lambert tried to do things properly, but in the end had to go to sit back soaking up pressure, and Sherwood attacked a bit too much, but it worked more often than not until the aforementioned disastrous transfer window. Garde was just a clueless, awful, manager.

Was he though, or did he just inherit absolute shite with no confidence? I don't think any manager could have turned that round.

The expectation wasn't to turn it around, it was to not look and act like a spoilt child, as he had come into the club under very difficult circumstances, have some kind of idea what he was doing, and not look like he'd already given up and was waiting to be sacked after 3 games.

Yeah it's difficult with managers to really know what is there talent and what is something they are being held back by club or players wise, managers have a style and idea, but the issue is can they do more than that, a lot can't. One of the positives about good managers is being able to work with what they have. Your preferred style might be 433, high pressing and tempo control but if you can't get your players to do that or you are away at a much better side then you need something else, and too often average/good managers don't.

I rate Lambert as a manager definitely did a good job with Norwich, the Villa job was a poisoned chalice and he did well to keep them up as long as he did. Seemed to bounce back quite well at Blackburn last season too but obviously with the way the clubs run didn't feel he could take them any further forward. He'll do well at Wolves especially considering the backing he'll receive.

We were Lambert's first game for Blackburn last season and they won 2-1. Hope that doesn't repeat on Saturday.
