I am, however, a world renowned authority on the western as communicated via the medium of mime.

Savages was ok, but nowhere near as a clever as it thought it was.

Just finished First The Killed my Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers. It was brilliant, the use of a children's, present tense voice made it all the more heart-breaking. There's some hope amongst the devastation, so that's nice.

Just picked up For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway.

I've started reading Robopocalypse, a book I bought what must be about 2 years ago now. It's basically World War Z (the book, not the film...) but with a robot uprising instead of zombies. A bunch of separate stories that together tell of a larger extinction level event.

I've just got to "zero hour", where the shit starts hitting the fan. It's actually a pretty cool approach to it all, and a scarily credible threat for a possible reality in the future.

Looking around, it seems that the book isn't overly popular with critics and such, but Spielberg is doing a movie on it. I see potential in that. I wonder if it'll turn out like World War Z (the movie) where it doesn't really have anything to do with the book.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
Did you see the original script for WWZ? It kept much closer to the source material and was far better than what they came out with.

Nah, never saw that. How exactly was it formatted? Was it like a bunch of separate short stories telling a larger picture, or just a dude going around hearing stories or what?

Started Stardust by Neil Gaiman. Read 20% of it in one sitting (cheers for the stats, Kindle).

I love pretty much everything Gaiman has written but for once, I thought the film version of Stardust was better than the book.

That's interesting, I thought the book was great but I really didn't like the film.

The Blood Crows - Simon Scarrow. Superb novel about The Romans trying to subdue The British Tribes 8 years after they invaded Britain in 43 AD.

Finished reading The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell. Story of the Danish invasion of England in the 9th century. A typical example of how useful a historical novel is when you want to read about a period far, far away but just can't be bothered picking up a history book. Great read that taught me quite a bit about English geography as well (which wasn't that bad given the amount of football grounds I visited).

I started reading Lords of Finances. One of those who look pretty cool in the bookstore (not in a Kindle online store!) but don't look to be particularly filled with interesting events once you start reading it. Shame it's nigh on 600 pages long!

I've read the whole Bernard Cornwell series on King Alfred up to the 6th book and will buy the 7th one this weekend. There is at least another 1 more in the series after that as well, it will be interesting to see how he ends the saga.

Found my Kindle screen had cracked when I went to use it the other day. Only the slightest crack in the screen but still enough to be off-putting. Luckily Amazon were quick to send a replacement (says it was a refurbished one but looks fine) so I'll be starting Neil Gaiman's Stardust soon. I'd been looking at it for a while and was fortunate enough to be offered it for free by Amazon as part of an offer.

Throne Of The Caesars by Harry Sidebottom. Set in AD 235 it's about the battle to become emperor while fighting off the barbarian tribes who want to destroy Rome.

Stasiland by Anna Funder.

Popped into Waterstones on my break the other day and noted this, with the recommendation underneath. Bloke at the counter raved about it as well. Needless to say I can't put it down. East German history fascinates me, particularly when it comes to the Berlin Wall and the Stasi.

I finished Robopocalpse a week or so ago.

Starts off good. Really good. Builds toward a robot uprising really well and then it's cool seeing the shit hit the fan.

But then it sort of gets a bit shit. Just lots of pretty much copy and paste stories of people fighting off robots. Meh.

I know that Spielberg is working on a film adaptation, and I think it would actually turn out ok as a movie. While it is a lot like World War Z, it's got a lot more of a focused storyline so it'll at least be better adapted than WWZ.

The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. About a third of the way through now, it's nothing groundbreaking but I'm enjoying it a lot.

The First Law: Book two "Before they were hanged".

I just finished it and thought it was excellent. I got through it really quick which is a good sign. On to the last book tomorrow.

I read "I am Pilgrim" it's alright. I've not read many thrillers and this one is about a ex secret service guy whose left the service but gets sucked back in to investigate a rogue terrorist.

Moves quite quickly for a big book and is easy to read. Has quite a few plot holes but if you turn off your sense of reality it's pretty good. The racist undertone got a bit annoying though.

Slowly working through the list of books that I've wanted to read for a while.

Finished Animal Farm in one sitting, decent enough read. Now onto The file: A Personal History by Timothy Garton Ash.

Just finished Shantaram and really enjoyed it. A bit long-winded in places but its a great story.

Apparently being made into a film with Jonny Depp, who sounds like the worst actor they could have cast in the role.

I've decided to be an absolute nutter...

AND READ TWO BOOKS AT THE SAME TIME :O

I know. What a twat. It's just... as I try to mention at any given opportunity, I'm on holiday for a very long time soon. I usually try to gear it so that I finish reading a book just before I go on holiday so I can start something new when I leave but...

1) I finished reading Robopocalyspe quite a while ago now, and though I intended to not read anything until I left, I am missing it...

And 2) I've been thinking... two 11 hour flights, two more 1hr 20 min - ish flights, 3-4 hours to London twice... over the course of 25 days or something... would one book be enough? Probably not.

So... I'm doing two. And yeah, I'm gonna read them at the same time. However, they are different kinds of books...

I got Mick Foleys first autobiography for xmas and always intended on taking it to the US with me, to keep with the wrestling theme. Thought it'd be something pretty cool to read while I'm out there finally watching WWE after 15 years of following it. The second... is Game of Thrones. I've never re-read a book before, but I always intended on doing it with the GOT books prior to Winds of Winter coming out. So I've started that now, with the goal being that I can space out the GOT books over the next year or so and by the time I finish Dance with Dragons, WoW should be out... (right?!).

So yeah... ones and autobiography, the other is GOT. I reckon I can go back and forth between the two of those without it being too bad.
