So lets start a topic on your best young players to see if others agree.

Rules:

1)Need to be in or around your first team
2)No one over 20 years of age
3)Reasons why you think they could play at a higher level
4)Have they been linked to anyone higher up in the league's?

Nathan Smith is our best by far since Anthony Gardner 20 years ago. Went on loan to Torquay two seasons back and won POTY, back pocketed James Hanson on his debut last season and won five of the six POTY awards, one of the stand out centre halves at this level easily and scores goals.

If we keep him past January I will be chuffed but he will likely be at a top end Championship or Premier League club sooner or later.

Billy Reeves and Dan Turner also are breaking into the side, Dan scored last weekend so we seem to be reaping the benefits of our youth academy at the moment.

Has Ady sacked all your scouts? :D

Every time I've seen Olly Mehew he's looked the part, though that's mostly been in pre-season and county cup games.

We have no money let alone any scouts lol. I wanted to start a thread as it's nice to see if fans from different clubs agree on young talent coming through.

Great post. A really good youngster, these players need to spend longer in the lower leagues as they sign for the big clubs and never to be seen again

Nobody fills this criteria for us, and nobody has since Potts and Dempsey. Samir Nabi is the only player of 20 or under in our first team squad (excluding development contracts and loanees) and while he may prove to be a find, we've only just signed him after he had a spell in India, he's certainly not attracted any attention and if and when he does come good he'd be over 20. Our development contract players all look a bit off the pace, and first team yet.

You're not gonna get them to sign for Yeovil, Darren.

Our first team is packed with 17-20 year olds just breaking through.

Jack Taylor, first choice centre midfielder. Composed, committed and good eye for a pass. One of those players who appears to have more time than those around him. Few clubs sniffing around.
Harry Taylor, current first choice right back who can play centre midfielder and centre back. Jacks slightly older brother.
Darnell Smith, Tom Day and Joe Payne are defenders who make the bench, will play in minor cup games and have bright futures.
Nana Kyei promising attacking mid .
Wes Fonguck holding mid who helped keep Peterborough quiet.
Fumnaya Shomotum, tricky and skillfull winger / AM
Shane Cocharel, striker very lively in his start last season but dropped down the pecking order after compound fracture.
Ephron Mason Clarke, exciting striker that we have high hopes for 17 and had a couple of sub appearances
Justin Amaluzor is probably just too old to be included but this looks like his breakthrough season

Hard to pick out those who may play higher. Taylor brothers are nailed on, all the others are very promising.

James Justin is the stand out for us - being linked with Forest in this window for fairly significant money. A very good, athletic right back who i think plays with a maturity beyond his years, Id expect him to go to a Championship club next summer probably after another year developing here which I think he probably needs before making that sort of jump. On the other side Jack Senior is only 20 so just about qualifies, promising looking left back who had a decent run of games last season before running out of steam a little bit, dont think he is as talented as Justin but still pretty promising.

We have a couple of others in and around the first team squad that haven't quite broken through to playing significant minutes yet. Famewo & Musonda are both centre halves, judging from the comments of Jones it seemed like Famewo in particular would have played a bit more last year if he didnt pick up a recurring issue with shin splints I think it was (something like that) and we have deemed Musonda promising enough to offer him a new deal today.

Tyreeq Bakinson is also just on the fringes on the first team, looks a classy central midfield player who I expected to see a little more of last season although it may been one year too early for him, he had previously been linked with Spurs. There are a few others who were offered deals recently but not worth mentioning really as they aren't close really.

Thinking about it, it feels like a long old while since we produced a decent young attacking player, all our promising ones seem to be defenders and midfielders, would be nice to see a local lad banging some in at some point in the future.

Yeah this is true, can't remember the last attacker who broke through really despite having a seemingly endless supply of defenders especially churned through the system. There was Cauley Woodrow I guess but he was snapped up before we really even saw him, same for Freddie Hinds who scored on his debut for Bristol City this week. Going back further there were a couple of nearly-men like Liam George (real talent but never fulfilled his potential) and Fotiadis, but you'd probably have to go as far back as Hartson to find one who really made it after breaking through here (don't think you can count Thorpe, his break-through was here but IIRC he came through the system at Leicester primarily).

Why is it always threads about good young players. They're always boring bastards anyway. the real characters are the old gits who keep going forever and like their banter. Jon Parkin for example.

Why not have one listing your clubs best oldies, only players 33+ allowed.

Siriki Dembele will cause havoc this season if he carries on his recent form. Already shown against Chesterfield on the opening day what a talent he is.

This is his first pro football contract having spent time at The Nike Academy last season. No doubt if he does carry on his form then other clubs will obviously come sniffing.

Don't have any of those either. We really are a very mid to late twenties dominated squad.

James Berrett is a fantastic player breaking through for us, be gutted if anyone were to come in for him! Fine young talent!!

Dembele is crap. Couldn't even get the number 7 shirt over Berrett, so is there really any sort of comparison?

:fl: Was actually the case a few years ago, his career went south badly, I remember when we were battling Huddersfield in the League One promotion race, it was common for their fans to question what moron released him. Doubt they'd want him back so much now.

I think it's often the case with players like Berrett that they either continue to play in successful teams and continue looking decent, or their teams struggle and they get found out and then it's difficult to bounce back because no successful team will have them.

Well all 4 of our midfielders that have started both games so far fit the criteria, Ainley (19) Wintle (20) Lowery (19) Cooper (20)

Cooper has already made 96 apps for the club and is a key player. Lowery has started the season very strongly, he's only 5ft 6 but looks a class act, along with Porter probably been our best player in the two games.

But the player I'm most excited for would be Owen Dale (18) a little striker that looks quick and very composed in front of goal, if he keeps developing I wouldn't think it will be long til he's playing regular, he's probably the most likely to have the potential to command the next big fee coming out of our academy.

The only 20 or under player we have, who is ours, is Harry Anderson.

Do Grimsby even have anyone under 30, let alone 20?

#Dadsarmy
Pretty much everyone apart from 3 or 4 of our players are between 20-30. Good thing about these oldies at the back is that nobody is gonna be sniffing around them. Raggett, who pound for pound at this very moment in time is an inferior defender to Danny Collins, is probably going to be leaving at some point in the next few weeks. Danny Collins is going nowhere because he is 37 years old so we don't have to worry about replacing him.

None of our players are under 20 but we have a left back who is 19 on loan from QPR.

Our squad is full of young players although not that many under 20. We have Charlie Cooper central midfield the managers son and he gets a lot of stick for it but has earns his place as a regular starter. Turned down championship teams to sign for us. Reece Brown attacking Mid full of technical ability and played for England through all the age groups. In first choice starting 11 at the moment but has plenty to prove.
Jordan Simpson I've only seen glimpses as he is not first team yet. A box to box midfielder strong aggressive and. Skilful with a good passing range. Might well become the best of all 3. Thanks to Swindon for letting him go.
