Who are your true rivals??

What's the biggest game you have?? What are your memories of these games?? Good or bad. Be interesting to see who Lincoln, Barnet, Newport and Morecambe see as their rivals??

Workington, although they are just a place we send our young players for experience now, back when they were a league club we voted against them when they were up for re-election. Some old jameaters still hold that against us to this day, feeling that we threw them under the bus in order to muscle in on their catchment area.

Stoke City (obviously) only had good memories in my time as a Vale fan, beating them at the Britannia in the last meeting in 2002 with Micky Cummins pea rolling header, golden goal winner in the LDV semi's and just before my time properly supporting the Vale winning at Huddersfield 4-0 on the last day to stay in what's now the Championship as Stoke were relegated.

Good times...

Nothing else comes close to them but now we make do with the likes of Crewe and during our last league two spell Shrewsbury probably became the biggest current rivalry apart from Stoke but that subsided since.

Done this loads of times before and with regards to your opening post, the Lincoln fans have even answered this In the last month or so in another thread. Alas, I'll say the same things I always do.

In this division and over the last decade or so, it's been Lincoln for us.

For me personally though, I'd say Scunthorpe and Hull. I grew up in a small town bang smack in the middle of all three, so anyone that didn't support a PL team growing up chose one of the local sides so at school their was quite a bit of friendly rivalry between the 3 sets of fans. However, I'm 33 and we've never been in the same division as Hull since I have supported Town and have only played them once competitively in the AWS. Only been in the same division as Scunny once, have played them once in the same AWS campaign and then twice in the FA Cup a few years back (a draw and a replay). Therefore, it's difficult to put that above the Lincoln rivalry in recent times. The Lincoln thing is more out of us just being thrown together so many times now. It was never a thing when I was younger.

Plymouth Argyle. Been known to get a bit tasty, especially whenever we beat them at gnome park. Fortunately the swilly massive aren't too clever so no worries there!

We like: Torquay, Rovers, Yeovil etc. Good bauys them.

Watford are our traditional rivals but unfortunately we don't play them as much as we used to. Have a fairly decent record against them. We used to play eachother far more regularly during our top flight and championship (div 2) days to the extent that matches began to lose their edge. The older element of our support will remember that games against QPR were far more intense and to a certain extent replaced the Watford rivalry. The last few games against Watford saw a return to the old rivarly hatred. I'm sure both sets of fans miss the fixture.
Don't have any other rivalries. From time to time they'll be some interest in a fixture but more often or not it's short term. There are a clubs we dislike. MK Dons due the city trying to get our club to relocate there. Millwall 1985 and all that. But these could hardly be described as rivalries.

Depends who you ask and how long they have been following the team. Some of the older fans say Shortwood, others say Cheltenham, but the easiest way to judge is by which team has songs sung about it accompanied with a string of obscenities. If that is the case it has to be Gloucester City.

I suppose it depends in which era you grew up and when you first regularly started going to games.

For me it was the late '70's early '80's so for me it was the 2 Sheffield Clubs, Barnsley and latterly even Leeds, after their relegation, rather than Lincoln, Scunny or Hull as they were always at least one level below us for most of that time.

Obviously recently, when we found ourselves in the abyss of The Conference it became Lincoln City but to be honest I've never really looked on them as a rival, more like an annoying little brother most of the time. Of couse we have a rivallry with Scunny but they've been at least a level above us for a long time now and us and Hull have only ever played a handful of times in my lifetime.

Only one proper rival and that's Pish. We had a fairly heated rivalry with a horrible little club called Histon during our last spell in the Conference but they're back where they belong and are now an irrelevance.

Yep it's all about Peterborough for me, is a shame we were such a basket case for so many years as they've been a league or 2 (or 3) above us so not had the pleasure of playing them.

Stevenage, Luton, Histon etc have merely filled the void and tend to be forgotten about as soon as the games are over. We haven't forgotten about Boro in 15 years.

To be fair the reason we sell out at yours but not Shrewsbury was more easy of travel. You can get a local bus service to Crewe and do a 10-15 minute direct train which you can't from Shrewsbury. We sold out at Macclesfield in similar numbers but again you can be there in less than half hour from S-o-T.

Has a bit of needle and the best we've currently got is Crewe in terms of regular opposition, Adams and Gradi helped boost it a bit I guess and the large sections of Crewe fans who were creaming when we went into administration (although the Vale fans pushed for it to get rid of V2001) left a sour taste. Don't hate Crewe though like I do Stoke (although personally hate Leicester more due to my location!)

There is another factor here, particularly with larger clubs who don't necessarily have a cross-city or traditional rival, and that is the fact that their supporters may regard different clubs as their main rival. I have met quite a few Leicester fans over the years, who considered Derby, Forest or Coventry as their main rival, the deciding factor seems to be which one is nearest to where they actually live.

It's also convenience. I despise the peasants from over the river but we haven't played them in the league for years ( as they love to remind us) so teams slot in as and when. Swindon, Plymouth, Yeovil ( god help us) Newport... it'll always be that lot really though.

Ours is, and always will be, Gloucester City.

Our issue with Gloucester is more than just football, there's the whole social and historical aspect to take into account, the town and city are traditional rivals with Cheltenham being the middle class cousin to the working class Gloucester over the way.

A lot of our fans will be trying to make something out of FGR, but that's only because we've not played a full, competitive fixture against Gloucester for 19 years now. These are the same people who class Rushden and Diamonds (yes, really), Swindon and Hereford as rival games.

Well we were formed to stop Grimsby winning the county cup way back in the 1880s, when county cups were the thing to win.
When I was younger it was probably Scunny but for me and most Lincoln fans it has be Grimsby for the historical point of view, some of the things that happened back then were like the hooliganism of the 70s and 80s!
Scunny are closest, then Mansfield,Grimsby,Notts County then Hull (played them loads between 1996 and 2004 !)

One thing I'll say about Barnet is that you're the only club ever to consider us as a rival (apart from Workington but they're too tinpot to count), the whole champagne fiasco is still remembered in these parts. We do have these occasional niggles with teams from long distances away, we had a bit of a thing with Lincoln for a bit, back when our owner got arrested for punching one of their stewards.

This division this year is pretty good for rivalries, we've got Mansfield v Chesterfield; Grimsby v Lincoln; Vale v Crewe; Wycombe v Football. It's perfect.
