Moomin's interesting thread got me thinking about the flip side. Who have you signed that everyone else poo-poohed but has been a revelation for you?

For us it is most of our team, Carey, Jervis and a few others did not come too highly recommended, but the obvious one is our man of the season: Bradley. People on this forum and elsewhere were quite lukewarm about him.

I don't think they were necessarily wrong, but something about the way Adams sets his team up and the people around him suits Bradley better.

Oh sorry, I thought the question was 'those players who others said they were crap and they were right'.

Mark Yeates has been good for us so far, but too early to tell. Wasn't highly rated from Blackpool or Bradford fans.
Jon Stead to a lesser extent as well, going through the best goalscoring spell of his career with us.

To be honest most players we sign always gets the warnings from the players ex clubs fans about how shit they are or a bad egg etc, but most work out well for us.

The obvious one for me being Jon Nolan last season, we signed him in January only to be warned by Lincoln fans about his terrible attitude and how he would divide the dressing room which meant a lot of our fans were thinking what has Hurst done bringing in a player like that?

He turned out to be our best player from January onwards in my opinion and played pretty much every game so there was no attitude problems at all, he was an absolute revelation leading to his move into League 1 straight after he had helped us win promotion.

Good shout, Boletus....

The most obvious one for us was Matt Gill who was described as being utter shite by Notts County fans and yet he was huge part of our back to back promotions a few years back and even scored a decent number of goals for a defensive midfielder. Still not sure how he managed to bag a big contract at Norwich but he was very good for us...

Another player who was allegedly shite according to Argyle and Notts fans was Alan Gow. Easily one of the most talented players I've seen and largely he was very good for us. Occasionally he could try one trick too far but some of the goals and assists he provided were exceptional.

Alan Gow was relatively good for us, certainly wasn't disliked - and that was at League 1 level.

I never thought Gow was bad, there was clearly a player in there, we were just the wrong team to get the best out of him.

Haydn White, Notts Co fans also told us he was wank but he's been quality for us. Bar mouthing at that ref last Saturday whilst on a yellow anyway.

Michael Nelson, Cambridge fans really laid into him when we signed him, but he has been an absolute rock both on and off the pitch.
Ricardo Santos, Peterborough fans thought it was hilarious that we paid money but when paired with Nelson so he has an old head keeping his desire to run the length of the pitch in check he is excellent.
John Akinde, all fans from his former league clubs say he's not good enough. All managers of clubs we play comment on how dangerous he is.
Sean Batt,....sorry wrong thread.

The one who immediately springs to mind was Chuks Aneke. Fans of the other two teams he'd had loan spells with (Preston and Stevenage? I can't be bothered to check...) seemed to think he was pretty useless. He's actually an insanely good footballer.

Dan Parslow last season was immense. Distinctly remember one Grimsby fan saying that a top of the Conference team would not be starting Parslow. A couple of York fans also talked him down elsewher.

Mine and Players' Player of the Year last season, a shame League 2 is a step too far for him.

Very very early days and could of course still go rapidly down hill but Ollie Palmer is nowhere near as bad as billed so far.

I was expecting a barely functioning human being from some of the rhetoric on here, but, even though I really don't think he is the target man Jones makes him out to be, he has show some good flashes of genuine quality and works hard.

He was immense for us in the Conference the year we lost the play off final to Bristol Rovers.

That definitely wasn't me. :animatedf:
I remember Stockport fans telling us Rob Jones was a useless PE teacher when we signed him and he looked like that at times when he first signed, but went onto have an immense 05/06 season and was Hibs captain the following season.

We down at the Orient also started out thinking that. Don't worry, you'll change your mind soon enough.

Ryan Harley.

Every other team he played for basically had him bench warming after a few appearances. For us, he has been a legendary player.

Alan Gow was decent enough for us. Not world beating but pretty decent.

John Marquis came to us having had several relatively humdrum loan spells around the lower leagues and not really achieving too much. Signed for us with little fanfare, but turned out to be excellent for 6 months in league one. We then tried to sign him in the summer as he was out of contract at Millwall, but they decided they'd offer him a new deal as he'd proven himself with us. He then went on to barely feature for Millwall the following season, instead being farmed out to Northampton on loan where, surprise surprise, he scored a few goals and did very well. Signed for Donny in the summer and is obviously now doing excellently there, and for some ridiculous reason we didn't try and go back in for him at the same time as Donny did. So stupid.

Others who we've signed who turned out better than expected (not saying they were world-beaters, but they were given horrendous reviews) include Stuart Nelson, Charlie Allen and going back a bit further, Bas Savage, who despite being billed as the worst striker around actually did a job for us. It wasn't a particularly prolific job, but he had an impact certainly.

Hopefully Zesh Rehman is another who fits the bill.
