Diamonds 1 - 3 Alfreton
Despite the fact I expected it I'm still a bit disappointed. Listening to the game Alfreton had more chances, but Diamonds had spells on top - couldn't score in those spells. Ironically our goal came to level things at 1-1 just before half time when Alfreton were dominating the game.
Interesting to note that Alfreton's 5 goals over the 2 legs were 4 free kicks and a deflected clearance. Seems they missed open goals from open play in both legs too. Finishing from open play clearly not a strong suit for Alfreton, and defending (and attacking) set pieces not one for Diamonds. Alfreton really didn't like our forwards running at them. If we'd played this game last year we would have been easily beaten without the forward options we have this year, if we'd played without all the injuries I think we'd have had a fantastic chance. Not to be though. A shame we couldn't hold on in the original fixture when we lead.
A tough tie at Stourbridge for Alfreton, where they will face another team similar to us (and better than) in their recent history of FA Cup runs. It's not a draw I'm disappointed to miss out on, but it would have been nice to knock out another team from above and have a chance of going further. We've had an eye on reaching the 1st round proper ever since the Barwell fixture a couple of years ago, and this is actually the earliest we've gone out since being promoted to this level, we've also not been knocked out by a side at the same level or below us yet.
Nabil Shariff will be glad to get back to league games. With just 1 goal over the 2 legs his goals/games ratio was taking quite the hit. Brown was back on the bench, though I imagine he would have only taken the pitch in the event of a defensive injury emergency, but encouraging that we might be able to play 4 defenders again soon...
