It was Sittingbourne who claimed to be the Man Utd of non league football, right before running out of money and selling their half built stadium.

As a newer Maidstone fan who started following them when they and I moved into the town, I'm glad the kids have something to sing about and a club to support.

Lots of clubs in the National Leagues have fallen on hard times. I don't wish Maidstone's fate on any of them. Every football club in the country is just one bad owner away from catastrophe.

Tommy Docherty (younger readers may have to Google him) said Altrincham were the Man United of non-league football in 1988; I'm still waiting.

Anyway, today was another step on a very low-key but very welcome FA cup run.

Better side won today no complaints.

Oh dear. I was talking about Maidstone's HOME support, not Torquay's AWAY support. There is a big difference. Maidstone were lucky to get c.300 when playing only 10-15 miles from their home town... hence my disdain for that cringeworthy ditty.

Like when your crowds miraculously improved when you started winning matches under Johnson.

Today was awful.

So many of our team are just not up to scratch. Get rid of all of Still's signings, bar Walker who's a squad player at best and include Dan Sweeney, who's an absolute liability and was at fault for both goals.

A squad of ours without Boucard, Alexander, Reynolds, Adams, Sparkes and Sweeney, with some adequate replacements from the freed up wages, will see us be so much more capable.

It was a lifeless display from us. Fleetwood hardly had to get out of cruise control.

Remember when you deservedly won at Meadow Lane earlier this season? Great time to play us and you had the huge bonus of the TV cameras.

Surprised to hear the struggles

I was born in Maidstone hospital, and have lived in the town for every one of my 30 years on this planet, but the trouble is that when I was in my formative years, there wasn't a local club - Gills were more local. Now the Stones are back in the town, I thoroughly enjoy getting down there as often as I can and meeting up with old friends from school - if the club had been there when we were actually AT school then I'm sure I'd be even more of a fan these days.

Yesterday was a good fun cup day out, and Stones more than deserved the win - the atmosphere is always good down there and the 'kids' in the Genco really get behind their side.

I've been there for all of our biggest matches, like when we won the FA Trophy at Wembley for example. Like when we won the 4th division title v Rochdale. Let us know when you win a cup. Let us know when you win a title.

We've won the Durham Senior Cup many times.
Are you the Quakers who frequented the old Rivals board.

Unfortunately some of your players believed it too. I well remember Emlyn Hughes wordlessly putting your captain back in his place with a searing blanking, when he stepped up to collect an award on an episode of Question of Sport. #OuchThatHadToHurt :ds:

Rochdale are one of the best footballing sides in League One these days, so definitely a good result for Wrexham.

Any similarity with Halifax on the pitch probably ended in about 1998.......
Piss off, they're our doppelgangers and more than brothers, they're our blood brothers. They're STILL our most frequently played opponents. The only real difference was in the boardrooms- they were always a bit better run than we were, and when it came to the crunch on the introduction of automatic relegation, had the people in place who took the necessary steps to arrest what initially looked like an inevitable slide into non league obscurity. With our boardroom, we had NO chance! :dk:

0-0 at home with Rochdale. A good result but it basically means we are out now anyway.
I'd say that was a bad result for you lot! We were very lucky not to lose that. I expected us to kick up a gear in the 2nd half but the opposite was true. We passed around plenty but did nothing with it and as the game went on Wxm looked more comfortable than us.
I've seen this so many times in recent years though. We scrape a draw at a lower league or non league side away and we end up winning the home replay quite comfortably. Hope that's the case this time! Next Tues aside best of luck for the season.

That was more your lot being so disjointed as you were all strangers at that point. You’re now very strong with your continued signings and improved understanding as a team. You will go up as champs this season.

We won’t be in your situation for a long, long time. We’re here for a stint that would make even Wrexham and Hartlepool pity us. If we don’t die as a club before that, that is.

It's November & I'm posting in an FA Cup thread. What is this madness?

Macclesfield Town 0-4 Kingstonian

On paper that looks pretty impressive, slightly skewed result though as Macclesfield's first team was on strike so ultimately we beat their youth team (with a few senior players on loan to the club involved). Proud of our fans joining in with protesting about Macclesfield's owners... we went down that route (coincidentally just after the last time we reached the proper rounds of the cup) so it's good to see we haven't forgotten where we came from like others have done.

Round 2 awaits! Not sure who I want us to be paired with... there are 2 teams lower ranked than us still in it, wouldn't mind getting Chichester City at home but dear fabled deity in the sky please do not give us Malden & Tiptree! An away tie against a proper club, or AFC Wimbledon (if they beat Doncaster in the replay) would be good. Can see us racking up the miles & getting Carlisle away though.

They're two towns just down the road from where Roy Carroll relegated you in 2015 - hope that helps :hypo::blush:

Relegation you say, which one?
Where was that Gillingham? Didn't go, I think I was in Louisiana at the time.

Since the County Ground relegation last season the others have taken a serious step back.

It would’ve been a very tough game regardless with how they set up - give players that squeezed us for room all game. Very cynical and dirty - we would’ve needed a bit of a stronger ref to get around their tricks.

We just lacked the physical attributes needed to compete - strength, size, pace, skill. Fleetwood looked bad because that was all they had to do - they’re not 5th in L1 for no reason, I’m sure they could’ve upped the ante if required.

The difference in physical strength between us and them was quite marked. It’s funny because it’s usually the lower ranked team that looks to squeeze the space and make the match a physical contest but that wouldn’t have suited us. What we needed to do was to turn their defence and utilise Walker’s pace. Bringing EMC on ought to help but we always play the ball to his feet instead of in front of him to run onto and it was noticeable that as soon as he received the ball there were 3 Fleetwood players breathing down his neck.
The atmosphere at the club feels very low at the moment and I’m not sure what can be done to get us out of that funk.

If we were performing well on the pitch, I don't think the atmosphere at the club would be an issue.

The other issues, which all stem from the way the club has always been run under TK but more importantly, us moving away from Barnet, come to the fore whenever the team isn't performing well.

We need to be realistic and accept Currie needs to remain in charge this season so that he can learn from his mistakes and then build his own squad in the summer. If we achieve anything this season it will be a bonus.

We are only 8 points off the top despite looking to be desperately lacking in confidence. Things could be a lot worse.
