What really pisses me off about this competition is that before they ruined it by sticking in the U21 teams I actually quite liked it, we’ve had a few good runs in it and one year we got Leeds away which of course was a great draw and the year we won it we had games against Chesterfield Hull and Scunny along the way.
And now it’s just completely fucked.

Yeah used to be decent, won it twice both times beating Stoke away in the area Semi's so obviously good memories! 1993 was our first ever trip to Wembley and 2001 kick started our season.

I bet both times the Stoke fans made out that they weren’t bothered too?

We beat Scunny away 2-0 in the quarters and both goals were in the last 5 minutes so it went crackers but what sounds mental now is that we beat Hull at home 1-0 in an earlier round and I remember being a bit disappointed that we’d only beat them 1-0 as they were around the bottom of League 2 whilst we were around the top of League 1, how things can quickly turn around eh.

about the only good thing about the u-21 sides in this cup is the ability to say a few years later that you saw some kid play who turned into a 1st team regular and/or international. Garnacho (and Pellistri) played for United's u-21 team when we played them at home a few seasons back.

You're missing one there. Highly rated midfielder Tom Huddlestone was the pick of the bunch.

Beat Liverpool U21s 5-1, which was nice. Our biggest win in this competition since it was changed to the current format I believe.

Liverpool oddly are probably the worst of the under 21s we’ve faced which is a surprise as you’d expect them to have a better side than say Wolves. Played them twice and scored 9.

Total waste of time having these teams in it.

Well, at least they weren't rolling out a Jay Spearing or Tom Huddlestone type player to act as their chaperone. But I agree, it's totally pointless, it hasn't worked and this whole experiment needs to end. But the EFL chairman will continue to take the scraps thrown their way from the PL.

Agreed on the Liverpool not being very good point, we beat them 4-0 last season then half of them turned up in the league cup final a few months.

Stoke were pretty poor when we hammered them but in fairness we went full pelt strongest XI for that one! couldn't risk not winning it! Newcastle have given us the best games, had them 2-3 times now but the only U21 side to get anything against us (beat them on pens mind) last season. Got Wolves next week for the third time I think now.

Newcastle u21’s toneet at Valley Parade

A welcomed fixture following the horrendous showing at Grimsby on Saturday.

Chance for a fringe lads to get a run out.

GK: Colin Doyle

CB: Cheick Diabate
CB: Cieran Kelly
CB: Jack Shepherd

LWB: Jay Benn
RWB: Lewis Richards

CM: Clarke Odour
CM: Alex Pattison
CM: Jamie Walker

ST: Olly Sanderson
ST: Calum Kavanagh

Shit or bust for Kav tonight. If he doesn’t score, he’ll be dropped at the weekend.

As I said on this weekend's match thread - normally I'd want to see the kids put out and not give a shiny shite. But after three defeats in a row, we really could do with a confidence boost.

Flynn hinted on Saturday evening we'd probably go strong tonight as well.

Wolves U-21's which presents a chance to progress following our win in the first game.

We will likely use this for minutes in returning players so will be fairly strong, George Byers, Jayden Stockley, Lorent Tolaj, Nathan Smith, Ben Amos, possibly Ethan Chislett plus the new signings such as Cover, Diamond, BBB and Rico Richards I expect to play.

We are 18 games winning run at home in this going back 7 years apparently!

Think it’ll be a tough one tonight for us at Lincoln. They’ve not got a game Saturday due to international call ups, so I think they’ll go pretty strong, whereas with our current injury issues there is no chance Cook risks any of our key men.

Can see us looking like this:

Thompson
Williams Dunkley Grimes Araujo
Metcalfe Jones
Jacobs Hobson Berry
Drummond

Looking forward to seeing Metcalfe and Thompson who are both new signings. Thought Metcalfe looked bright when he came on against Gills and very highly regarded at Everton so be good to watch a decent amount of him

Well…

It’s actually even weaker than I predicted. Cooks even started his son who’s certainly no footballer, shows exactly what he thinks to this competition… you almost have to applaud it

9 changes from us but still a competitive side. Debuts for Ashby-Hammond in goal, Webster at right back and a 2nd debut for Dack as well. First starts of the season for Coleman and Andrews with Nevitt on the bench for the first time is promising in terms of our injury issues - fingers crossed we can start putting out some strong 18 man squads from here on in.

Bolton have only made 3 changes from Saturday - Evatt must be feeling the pressure at Bolton.

A lot of the league 1 teams don’t have games at the weekend because of games being postponed from internationals, so they’ve all gone pretty strong.

Just seen youngster Emi Buendia has scored a couple for Villa’s U21s tonight away at Fleetwood… Ross Barkley partnering him in midfield too

Wolvo playing into the B team boycott anyway I’m pleased to say with 0 (zero) away fans.

Got that noted U21 footballer Tom King ex of Newport and Salford in goal.

8 changes for us from Saturday so clearly treating it as a “rest of the squad” competition but already 2 up against Cambridge
