Away version of above a little odd. Does this mean Stevenage were least popular to see and Luton most? Be interesting to see Average away following table and more so as a percentage of home support (ie attendance less away fans) and that would really turn the table upside down but arguably be a better barometer of better away followings.

I'm not sure what that table really tells us as there are lots of factors.

For example, attendances at Fratton Park were much higher than attendances at other grounds, enough I'd say that given there's only 1,500 difference between Luton and Stevenage, the average could be affected by what the attendance was when that team visited Fratton Park, and to a lesser extent, Kenilworth Road and Home Park.

The attendances in the big-crowd games aren't just affected by how big an attraction the away team is. In fact I'd imagine in the case of Fratton Park, Plymouth are the only team in this division that will be a factor in how many Pompey fans turn up; for the rest of the division it will be pretty much a factor of what time of the year and what day of the week their visit to Portsmouth was and how Pompey were doing at the time, and whether they had much to play for, and a similar thing could probably be said about what affected the attendances at Luton and Plymouth.

The other thing of course is that the total attendance includes away fans, so overall the away attendances are affected by:
  • How big an attraction the away team is for the home fans
  • How many fans the away team brought (probably more of a factor in Southend's high position as they have travelled well this year).
  • What other circumstances affected attendance at the bigger teams that have nothing to do with the away team.

Although the larger distinctions between top and bottom probably are down a combination of both those factors influenced by the away team like Luton and Portsmouth being of more interest to home fans as well as bringing more away fans than Dagenham and Stevenage, the finer distinctions where teams are only a few places apart are down to differences in the average of fewer than 50 fans and more likely to be down to the 'random noise' of time of year, day of week and the home team's circumstances, for example between Portsmouth and Luton, or between Hartlepool and Accrington.

Finally, and obviously, the only team not to play an away game at Fratton Park this season was Portsmouth, so this will handicap them, I would expect they do bring in more home fans than Luton do (sorry Luton), but because their away games have all been at clubs with smaller home attendances than themselves, it lowers their average.

I agree (but Bury still won't be a great loss). Those particular statistics tell us little and provide a sack of red herrings. Many will think, intuitively, that they don't accurately rank travelling numbers or attractiveness of visitors - and be right. Our midweek fixtures are often down over 1,000 (>20%) compared with adjacent Saturday fixtures, with little difference in away supporters. We do all our promotions on Saturdays and, much as I used to love floodlit evenings, we've been terrible mid week and our new/returning fans seem to be turning up on saturdays.

Taken from our forum we ended with an average of 6024, quite good that. Could well of been a few more if we scored a few more at home!
Well it would've been under 6000 if it weren't for us on Saturday bumping that up.

Because Saturday is very close to a total sell out, our average will be around the 8,700 mark for this season which I think is a tremendous achievement.

Course, but everyone has days where there is a large away following and it was also helped by us having over 8000 fans in.

I think the Carlisle attendance is pretty good, infact excellent.

Carlisle is a weird club, it can go from an easy 8,000 average when all goes well to a 3,000 average when it goes wrong, so considering we had a horrendous season I think keeping it over 4,000 was very good, especially since we've had next to no away fans all season (a lot of you other clubs get afew 1,000 plus away followings, we get our first really on Sat)

I'd think it should also keep us above budget when I think our budget was for about the 4,000 mark unless we overspent in the old 'trying to survive' buys.

going to be a really tough year coming up for Morecambe and Accrington, clubs who will rely on some good away supports and may only be able to rely on us for one the entire season next year.

Just over 4,000 for a city/club/catchment area the size of Carlisle is not terrific, it's woeful

I think it's below average, when you take into consideration how shit we've been.

Who wants to see their side get beat 3-0 at home to Bury, or 3-0 against York. Our home average isn't very good, but our away average is decent.

I quite enjoyed watching your side getting beat 3-0 at home to York.

Especially as they have no compedtion for fans from nearby clubs in higher divisions.

If you look in terms of our potential then I'd agree because we could and should easily get 15,000-20,000 fans without a worry

but I can only look at my past following Carlisle and normally for a season as bad as this we'd get 3,500 if lucky, therefore over 4,000 is good for us.

but yep Carlisle do get pretty terrible gates for the lack of competition here, a lot of it is down to skinflint mentality. People in Carlisle only spend if they believe it worth the price.

You think so? We're only 150 miles from Bury and it's difficult to get kids in school to support their local team and not get drawn in by the bright lights of Gigg Lane.

I really am bored of reading this quote - its not going to change unless you do an MK Franchise!

That and having a big catchment area does come with the flipside that it takes time and money to get to Brunton Park every home game from the further out parts of it.

Myself for example, takes me almost an hour there and the same coming back for every home game. Petrol costs are about £15 I reckon in my car (£35 if you go by the Inland Revenue's typical cost-per-mile of running a car), some people I know of, and there are a fair few season ticket holders out here, take the train in for every home game which can be cheaper if you have nobody to carpool with (or don't have a car) but takes a fair bit longer.

There are teams in this division that have several away games closer to them than home games are to a good proportion of Carlisle fans, so I can fully understand why there are fans who don't want to do that 23 or more times per season when the team aren't doing well.

A whopping 200,157 supporters have gone through the turnstiles at Kenilworth Road this season, with an average of 8,702 every league match. That is a phenomenal turnout. About 86% of capacity.

I'd say an average of 8,200 home fans every game out of a possible 9,000 home seats. We need a new stadium!

I'll take over 3,000.

This has literally been one of the worst seasons in terms of entertainment value for years in my opinion.

Would be interesting to know what the average away / travelling attendance is ? We're looking forward to improve on the 30+ from Gateshead !! (mind you I exclude D+R from that expectation :) )
Did we find out how many to expect ?

Reckon you'll see a good lot travelling from most clubs since its your new ground and a day in London. You'll get over 1,000 a handful of times I'd imagine

I'm sure you'll get a few from us, considering we have a London supporters club who always boost the numbers in a selection of southern away days, and I wouldn't be surprised if Barnet was their biggest game next season. Probably get a decent number from Cumbria as well, as Barnet will be one of the fixtures fans look for when the list comes out.

Our away attendances should push up a lot as we have so many southern games.

Is Barnet really London, you could be half way back to Carlisle by the time you've got into central London

I think most of the London branch don't actually live in central London. They cover the whole of the South East. In any case they have this underground railway system in London that gets you around pretty quickly.

Leyton Orient will be the main game for the London Branch Shoddy, I am sure a pub they used to have meetings in wasn't far from Orient and it is pretty much the easiest to get to in London with connections right at ground.

its why we always took 500-1,000 to Orient.
