When we moved into TNL, back in 2006, the away stand was the South Stand...near the changing rooms...I gather a previous manager (possibly Dave Hockaday) asked for the away stand to be swapped to the North so his players didn't have to walk onto the pitch past away fans as there were very few of ours in the West. The issue this presented was that the South Stand previously had seats in it at that stage, which were then removed, so we needed to give up part of the Main Stand to away supporters...as most of the teams that visited brought very few fans who wanted to be seated. This worked reasonably well until one particular team visited, were allocated two whole blocks in the Main Stand and it didn't go very well. After that game the club said that away fans would never be accommodated in an area where there were home fans.In Conference days the stand nearest road was the Away stand.
When promoted to the EFL apparently the away fans had to be moved to stop them using same toilets as home fans.
FGR then spent a small fortune erecting a seated bus shelter to accommodate EFL ground regulations. They could have spent the money more wisely by adding a set of toilets to that stand.
As it is FGR have shot themselves in the foot. Away supporters have the entire length of pitch to influence the game.
A lot of FRG supporters were less than happy to forego watching game from the 'Wet' West Stand because it was closer to the action and the sun was on their backs. Those in the VIP stand have to squint to watch game whenever sunny.
And the prevailing wind and rain is from the west, so those standing in West Stand are less bothered by getting wet than those opposite in the VIP East Stand who get soaked in the face.
There were a few games early in our time at the ground where away fans were allocated two stands, think that may have been the case for the Derby FA Cup game, as the club wanted to maximise income...when average home support was around 800-1000 that made perfect sense. However, like our time in the Conference, those days are well behind us.
