The fact that FGR Stroud talks about his team in the 3rd person weirds me out.

We give 1600.
But you will never know as we never publish the away numbers. ( sometimes Burton Albion Twitter do however ).

This thread is so bizarre

Seen dick waving a lot on here in the past but Forest Green getting in on the act is a new one.
When I first made reference to ElGlosico attendances I said it usually included controversy as it has this time.
I’ve been corrected when I first said that FGR always bring the most away fans to WR, I should have said that ElGlosico nearly always attracts Cheltenham’s largest crowd.
In the five seasons that both teams have been in same division there has only been one occasion when FGR has not topped Cheltenham's attendance table - 2017-2018. That year both Gloucestershire teams were in the doldrums; FGR escaping relegation late in season.
Therefore it is abundantly clear that FGR are consistently the most popular opposition at WR.

Table below gives WR’s top attendances in those years. (Season 2020-2021 had zero attendance – COVID.)
On end columns I’ve added:
[1] total attendance [2] home attendance [3] FGR away support [4] WR average.

Table below shows FGR’s top attendances in same years. However season 2019-2020 was truncated – COVID and Cheltenham did not visit TNL.
In those three seasons there has been different club attracting most fans to TNL.

Except your figures are distorted. In 2016, there were more Cheltenham fans for the game against Halifax than FGR - in a crowd of 5,245 there were only 102 away fans, but in the FGR game there were 800 or so FGR fans in the crowd of 5,449.

Look, sheer geography means that attendances in games between the clubs are likely to be in the top end of each club's attendances, but it's not because Cheltenham fans want to watch them play FGR - and I daresay the likes of The Jovial Forester and Greenacres feel the same about watching Cheltenham. The likes of Derby and Sheffield Weds will be vastly more appealing.

I will be looking forward to our games next season against Cheltenham, will go to the away game if I can, but they won't be the first games I look for when the fixtures are released. The games I'm looking forward to most are definitely Derby away as I have family living not too far from there and have already made plans to go to the game with them, maybe Bolton and Wednesday away and Ipswich at home...there are some other pretty attractive games too.

Coming on here, you expect to see attendance dick waving.. but certainly not from FGR

Still, every day is different I guess.

It’s the plot twist nobody was expecting.

By one fan. I enjoy the Cheltenham games for the banter etc but the tinpot bs around it is also quite annoying, a few kids pretending to be Green Street or something and the local media building it up like it's a grudge match when both clubs got on fine down the years and weren't rivals. They've always been a been a bigger club then us and some of their fans used to come and watch us.

I'm more looking forward to Sheff Wed, Derby, Portsmouth and Ipswich tbh.

It's the close season so not much to keep mind occupied. ;)
Besides despite being a small town Cheltenham had the run of the Gloucestershire roost until recent years. Then along came Dale Vince and his £ millions to challenge their place at top of the perch.
Their club and fans have not been in that position since 1999 and promotion to EFL. Not surprisingly their supporters are less than happy about it. GOOD :gr:.
In fairness Cheltenham have had far more successes than FGR , who have always had to play catch-up.

For years Cheltenham have moaned that they were a cash poor club. That changed when in 2021 they drew Man City at home in FA Cup. They now have money in the kitty so cannot use 'Moneybags' FGR as an excuse should they lose against their County neighbours.

And to our good friends outside Glorious Gloucestershire, you'll notice that the current combined average attendance for both clubs [4,239 + 2,687 = 6,926] is smaller than attendances of clubs at top of attendance league.

Stick him in a room with DL, and let them be done with it.

You have completely missed my point - whilst there were more people in total at the Forest Green game, there were more Cheltenham fans at the Halifax one. By your own definition, more Cheltenham fans were interested in a game against Halifax than they were Forest Green. There were also more Cheltenham fans at our home game against Lincoln (5,055 with 233 away fans).

Yours Truly for one, I actually own an FGR shirt (the green away one, with the white bar across the middle, sponsored by Smiths). I used to love my little trips up the hill when I couldn't make the Cheltenham away game. Then I went and had kids, and that ended any hope of me going to a football match every Saturday.

I'll be extra interested in the Cheltenham game mainly as it will probably be one of the ones we are in with some chance of picking up a point as they're only that much bigger and more established in the league than us and we'll be needing every one we can get. Local is nice for the travel but definitely don't feel any blood rivalry or whatever.

It's a young person's thing. We've not had a real rival for 25 years, FGR haven't had one since they were in the same league as Shortwood, of course the kids are going to grasp at it.

If Gloucester City were to fly up the leagues though, or us drop down them, then the League games between us and them would be much tastier, and definitely something to look out for. Those games were getting attendances upwards of 3,000 when we were averaging around 7/800 in the 90s. FGR would be dropped like a stone.

Bullshine, utter bullshine.
There are no records for the Chelt v Halifax match.

I dissagree, Gloucester hype themselves up to be a much bigger club than they actually are in my opinion.

It is a rugby town and in reality they have not been well supported, especially considering how big Gloucester is as a place.

They got a home crowd of 640 in their last game this season in the new stadium. That’s not great.

Whether you want to admit or not FGR vs Cheltenham is now. Huge game and all of you older Gits denying it, won’t change things.

Look Cheltenham are a very small club at this level, and so are FGR.

Cheltenham are slightly bigger than us, but not by much.

You tend to go on like Cheltenham are a far bigger club than FGR, you really are not.

We are bothTinpot.
Except my point has always been that we are tinpot - hence not caring about FGR when we're going to be playing the likes of Derby and Sheffield Weds again.

As for Gloucester being small, lets not forget that they had a regular league game with more fans than Forest Green this past season (August 21st - Gloucester had 2,034, FGR had 1,922 - it was also higher than 3 other FGR home league games). In fact, Gloucester had one league game that had more in attendance than all but 7 of FGR's home league games. For a team two divisions below (at the time), who you claim to be so small, that's impressive. It also speaks volumes for the potential the club has. In fact, it should be concerning to FGR that a team as rubbish as Gloucester, and dear God they were shite last season, can get bigger attendances when FGR are at their highest ever level. Gloucester being a rugby town is a lazy stereotype. Yes, the rugby club gets all the local press, but their attendances average around 14,000 - which is decent, but in a city the size of Gloucester isn't all that. Look at the pubs for a Man Utd or Liverpool game though and see how rammed they get. The problem with football in Gloucestershire is that until Cheltenham, there never was a league presence - no Gloucestershire football team had ever been in the top 100 clubs in the country (until 1998, the highest we'd finished was 11th in the Conference). It's not rooted in the community like it was in the north west mill towns, etc...if marketed right (and they're doing the right things at the moment) then there is a chance of a decent sized club on that side of the Golden Valley.

As for FGR being now - Cheltenham v Rushden was now in 1999, Cheltenham v Grimsby was now in 2016. Cheltenham v Gloucester always has been and always will be. It's historical between the conurbations, not just based in football. The fact that more Cheltenham fans were interested in games against Halifax and Lincoln should tell you everything.

Gloucester struggled on the pitch which knocked their crowds down after starting off getting decent numbers on their return to the City, but if they get it right next season and are challenging for promotion they'll be getting 1500-2000 I reckon.

FGR star is an example of the kids (on both sides) that don't understand the actual historical context of the Cheltenham - Gloucester rivalry, it's about more then football. We will never replicate that and tbh I couldn't give a fuck, I just worry about us doing as well as possible.
