Having already been on vacation this year (Russia for 2 weeks) I decided (actually was forced to for financial reasons) to stay at home for 3 weeks and during those 3 weeks I intend to go a full 2 weeks off the wagon in order to get my belly in shape. Been a week today and not missing the actual alcohol but missing going out with friends (which is fine because no one's around).

I love a few glasses of JD after work. I did have a 3.75 litre bottle of 12 yr old Johnny Walker black label which I paid £150 snots for but my wife decided to take it upon herself to open it the last time her family were over from France ,I so wanted to challenge that decision !
I was at a pub quiz last night and how long is Johnny Walker Black Label aged for was one of the questions, could have done with you posting that yesterday! (We went for 25 years haha)

....decisions decisions.....Dry day for me today, got to have them occasionally.

Probably have a few bottles of chilled Moosehead later ,its a Canadian beer with just the right blend of sweetness and hop bitterness.

I've transitioned from teetotalitarian to a nice glass of red wine with my dinner each day.

Health benefits and all that.

Been mixing up my drams the last three nights. Springbank 15 then a few Lagavulin 8's. Glencadam 6's then onto the imperial proof Benromach 10. And last night whilst bubbling away watching Song Of The Sea, I scooped down three Glengoyne 10's.

That's me till the end of the week though! (Maybe ;) )

Both my socked plates on the coffee table ,armed with a couple of cheeky Moretti's at my side, disapproving looks from the wife and close enough to the drinks cabinet to see those looks dissipate when my disinterest grows .....Weekend starts here !

Coming home next week for a wedding. Bringing the happy couple a bottle of local gin (it's a surprise though so don't tell them). Dunno what it's like but that ingredients list is impressive.

Also did anyone see that Adrian Chiles program? I caught it on YouTube. Found it interesting but not seen or sought out any discussion around it.

Think it brought up an important point about what makes someone an alcoholic and what the public opinion of being one is. Especially the self denial, right when the guy cooking dinner said they were "addicted to booze but weren't alcoholics". :ffs:

I have a colleague out here who drinks at least a bottle of red wine every night. He told me he could never become an alcoholic though coz he enjoys drinking too much so he'd never get himself to the point (morning drinking etc) where he where he had to give it up. The worst piece of logic I think I've ever heard tbh.

Anyway, hope my mate likes this gin.

Watched it last night. Ironically after finishing off my drams! Was just flicking through and it was on. Was only going to watch a bit of it, but ended up watching the whole thing. I was shocked to see him and his friends regular weekly amount was well over 70 units per week. I suppose its a lifestyle thing for him and some people, and a difficult habit to get out of.

Hit a wall last saturday while going too hard on the kraken. Almost broke my nose. Plus I have a race on Sunday and another one on October 14 so yeah I'm gonna cut back or at least less bringe-drink for the remainder of 2018. Don't know about zero booze in October though.
Gonna have a few tomorrow evening during Liverpool/PSG for example but gonna try and stay clear of the rhum for now.

Can't go wrong with a drink that lists the hand of Buddha among its ingredients, I wouldn't have thought. Ace dog btw :)

I gave the Chiles documentary a watch. I can definitely relate because I don't think my pattern of drinking is dissimilar - a little most days during the working week, with a heavier Friday/Saturday. It's very rare that I get absolutely trashed and hangovers are also very uncommon these days but I still find it easy to rack up say, about 40 units/week. It can be difficult to discern how much of a problem this sort of drinking is when you don't experience obvious adverse effects from it but that doesn't mean there aren't problems in terms of dependency or longer-term health issues and I think the doc explored that quite well (especially in the context of living in a society in which drinking is very normalised and almost an expectation in social settings).

I think people find it very easy to slip into patterns of behaviour and once something's become routine it becomes easier to justify and harder to break the habit. That seems to be the case with your colleague. If he's knocking back a bottle of wine a day that's at least 70 units a week. Probably nearer the 100 mark or beyond if that's a minimum. Like Chiles, I'm a little sceptical when it comes to the (rather arbitrary seeming) recommended limits, but I'd find it hard to view that sort of regular consumption as anything other than problematic.

Towards the end of the doc Chiles seemed to have reached a sensible conclusion and cut down to about 25 units/week. I'd like to think I might give that a go. I couldn't really forgo booze - love a pint in the pub - but could realistically cut out those odd unnecessary post-work beers without too much effort.

What's a unit?
Up here it is....
One alcohol unit is measured as 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol. This equals one 25ml single measure of whisky (ABV 40%), or a third of a pint of beer (ABV 5-6%) or half a standard (175ml) glass of red wine (ABV 12%). ... Find out more about alcohol units and measures.

don't know if the below image covers Scotland & England.

A few JD's today, more than is considered comfortable for driving ,so I'm waiting for the daughter to wake up for the Kentucky she promised before falling into a coma, I could go myself but I would just fall over if I stood up and the wife likes her ornaments.

Couple from one bottle, couple from the other. Usually start off on the light or sherried ones, then head to the peat monsters to finish. :D

Just spent the last 3 weeks or so in Perth WA and fuck me the alcohol taxes in that state are through the roof, $AUS 12.50 for a pint of local (cloudy) beer which is roughly £7 and wine is twice the price , now on the plane to Sydney for a few weeks where I'll be able to enjoy a bevvy without the need to renegotiate the mortgage repayments!

My mate lives there and some of the prices he quotes on some things are frankly ludicrous. He's paid well though so could afford it.

Casilerro del Diablo, Chile Merlot 2017 tonight. Not quite as good, but still very enjoyable.

I have to limit wine to Fri/Sat/Sun as I typically won't stop until I polish of least 1 bottle.

A single unitary authority for urban Dorset
Breaking a run of 4 weeks dry this evening for a work function. Found myself drinking virtually every day for a few weeks and needed a break.

But once back off the wagon, and contradicting the above, I'm looking forward to cracking open a beer advent calender next weekend. (here if you're interested) Apparently they've been 'a thing' for a few years now (?) but it's new to me. A colleague mentioned his and got me interested. It's slightly extravagant I know, but too tempting. The box turned the other day, a selection of 24 different (and many new to me) beers, mostly UK sourced but some European too, covering about every style.
