No one manager can fix England's institutionalised national trauma when it comes to football tournaments. We don't lack technique, we lack self-belief, confidence, and a supportive audience. High expectation and a toxic attitude towards the national team has created a vicious circle of poor results and further criticism.

England played incredibly well in all the qualifiers and friendlies before the Euros, beating teams that are far better than we are on some occasions. We went to pieces against Iceland because we instantly lose our shit if we concede. We get on our own backs and are our own worst enemies. We are psychologically a broken footballing nation, and no manager can fix it. The whole culture is broken.

Sammy Lee and Paul Clement to join Sam Allardyce's England coaching staff.

Kudos to the fans being optimistic at this one, by any metric is "Big Sam" even a patch on, say, Hodgson?

It could have been someone like Marcelo Bielsa but instead they've gone for a dinosaur who embodies everything they've been reportedly trying to change in English football. Sacked by Newcastle and West Ham getting shot of him, before improving significantly under Billic Hmmm.

It's the most transparently awful appointment since Stuart Pearce.

On the plus side he is bizarrely arrogant and thinks he could manage Real Madrid, that kind of Brent esque delusion suits England perfectly.

He needs help though. Players have to come through the ranks rather straight into the 1st team and it would be great if players had to be released from their league clubs to play for England under 19's etc..Like they do in other countries.

I'm pretty sure they don't enforce that in other countries either. I know the Netherlands U19 team were missing players due to their clubs not releasing them this summer for example.

Dude supports St Mirren, cut him some slack. The club that sacked Alex Ferguson and turned down Ronaldinho, understandable why he's so bitter.

What's arrogant here? Everybody could manage Real Madrid. The question is: How long?

Based on his club CV I don't suppose Chris Coleman was either.

Which is why Chris Coleman manages Wales, and was paid about half the average assistant in the Premier League is paid. And it's why if some club like Bournemouth want him he'd jump ship immediately.

It is rather amusing reasoning though, hire someone with a rubbish record because Chris Coleman managed to beat Belgium and the world worst ever Russian side?

So, if offered the chance of Fabio Capello or Joe Kinnear the latter would be chosen with the reasoning being "Chris Coleman".

It is completely counter intuitive, people will be rather unsurprised that I don't particularly want England to do well. The idea they might hire someone like Marcelo Bielsa or Jorge Sampaoli was concerning. The FA are enormously wealthy, they could pretty much attract most managers, especially those currently out of work. The fact they are completely aware of this, yet have gone for Sam Allardyce is absolutely hilarious - even more hilarious than when they sounded out Southgate only for him to publically reject it. It highlights the utter dysfunction and delusion that is the FA, it wouldn't surprise me if their brainless Chairman "not a football man" had ever heard of Bielsa or Sampaoli. Rather lets go for whatever waster won't cause too much trouble and is liked by the Daily Mail. It is staggeringly unambitious and, to reiterate this point again, makes a public mockery of their commitment to change their style of football, and imprint "England DNA" through wrist bands and other such nonsense.

It's a point that hasn't really been mentioned much, but how many of the England players actually respect someone like Sam Allardyce? It can't be many, the biggest clubs he has managed are West Ham and Newcastle, both of which punted him.

Somewhat accurate, but Alex Ferguson was sacked for trying to poach people to Aberdeen (a job he was always likely to get). It was not performance related. He lost the resulting employment tribunal he raised against the club, but since contributed to our stadium DVD so clearly bridges have been mended.

Ronaldinho was a clerical error, but not on our side but I believe on the side of the Brazilian FA.

The Mahrez one is my new favourite, rots in reserves for a few games before fleeing Paisley on a stolen bike - http://www.skysports.com/football/n...fled-a-trial-at-st-mirren-because-of-the-cold

His Allar-deche comment was excellent too. It will be an interesting move away from the ham fisted 60s joke of Hodgson to a fantasist who probably insists his autograph on unsuspecting passers by.

You're confused. It's not a reason to hire him, it's simply a fact that illustrates how little a managers CV matters in the grand scheme of things. There isn't much of a history of correlation between club and international managerial success, especially in recent years. The managers that have done well have done so with a a sound tactical basis, a good team spirit, and a group of players that have bought into their system completely. Whether Big Sam can deliver those things remains to be seen, but I don't think it's a criteria beyond him, and I don't think any result that Portugal achieved in the recent Euros is beyond the squad we have were the right mentality in place.

A managers CV is, without doubt, the most important factor when hiring for an international (or any) job. It's absolutely astonishing you seem to disagree with this.

There is a clear correlation between club and international management success - you are taking from a very small sample managers with no (or completely limited) club success winning international trophies. And the majority of them come through the Assistant route - a bespoke reoute Allardyce has clearly not taken. He has gone from overweight fantasist straight into the top job.

The Portugal squad is clearly much better than the England squad, in every area from goalkeeper, defence and midfield. They lack good striking options, but still have the second best player of all time as their primary forward. They are miles ahead of the England squad, and will be for the foreseeable future.

I do admire those being positive about this appointment, it's the kind of delusion big Sam would be proud of. Allar-deche is almost matching Brendan Rodgers level of self aggrandizement, if he ever does meet the players "WAGS" you can imagine he'll convince himself they are all madly in love with him.

It's great to see that, despite failing miserably, England can still garner more attention from certain Scots than they pay to their own team. Should it really matter how England fans view their new managerial appointment? You're trying a little too hard here methinks, as can be plainly seen from the word count of your posts. What are you trying to prove, precisely? Do you even know?
