Watching England under Hodgson was bad enough, if anything under Big Sam it might be even more boring.

Hardly wonderful news, more of a slap in the face as to where we are.

Best of a bad bunch though. Let's do this

Somewhere in East London, Andy Carroll right now is :bdick:

Well....at least we'll go into the World Cup (and there should be little doubt Big Sam will grind us our way there at least) with a squad and game plan that coherently fit each other.

Whether that is actually going to do us any long term good, I have my doubts.

Kevin Nolan will now come out of retirement hoping for his first England cap.

Glory? Define Glory in this case? Winning a title? That's not Big Sam's Expertise, or? His record in winning titles is......?
But maybe he can "cure" the Three Lions a bit from their "tournament complex"?

I've just had a quick look at some of the managers that are unemployed at the moment, none of which the FA appear to have considered.

Manuel Pellegrini
Guus Hiddink
Laurent Blanc
David Moyes
Frank de Boer
Andre Villas-Boas

Spain have just appointed Julen Lopetegui who has done far less as a manager than Big Sam. Did they consider them names above? I'm not sure any of the names above (Hiddink aside) would be remotely interested in stepping into International management for a country that they do not belong to. International management isn't about the 'name'. Fernando Santos winning the Euros and Chris Coleman making the semi finals should tell you that much. It's about finding the right character and also to a large extent, having things fall into place at the right time. Little things but if we'd have actually scored one of our 4/5 good chances against Slovakia, Wales would have been on the harder side of the draw and probably wouldn't have got as far.

Interesting way to look at it considering the harder side of the draw provided the losing finalist.

I don't think the host nation underperforming in a one off match has any bearing. The side with Spain, Germany, Italy and France in was stronger regardless of the final result.

I've warmed to having Sam Allardyce, think he will do a good job as at least now we will play with a clear system which Roy clearly struggled with. On top of that maybe his tactics will suit this team, fast direct football will be great for exploiting the pace we have. Long term he's not the man but he can stop this rot we've ebeen on and restore a bit of hope and pride for the next man who comes in to feed off, hopefully our youngsters debvelop a bit more during that time. Providing we get there he should get the World Cup in Russia and maybe even Euro 2020.

All the way up, nothing can stop Sam he's all the way up.

Seen both Fergie & Jose have backed him. I think they probably know a little bit more than the self appointed experts on here.

Are you referring to me with "self-appointed experts"?
Let me tell you I am in no way an expert, only a die hard football fan for more than 45 years.

No. I've been impressed with you in your short time on this forum. You've got top table potential if you can prove consistency.

FA's chief executive Martin Glenn:

Basically saying the press are at least partly responsible then. Fair?

I suspect there's an element of truth to it in the sense that our players do appear to be psychologically burdened which seems to negatively affect their performance. I don't, I must confess, find it a very satisfying explanation for abject tournament showings. As much as I can't really abide much of our press, expectation levels have, I think, been reasonably modest in recent years. We're a sizeable country and football is the national sport; media attention is to be expected and England are hardly unique in this regard. I don't think the coverage is so intense that it ought to result in our national team crumbling in a round of 16 Euros fixture.

Happy with Big Sam in the role. All you have to do is listen to the interview with Jermaine Defoe on 5 live about how he gets sides organised and instils confidence in them to know that he's probably the man for the job at this moment in time.

Precaution if the Three Lions will fail (again) in 2018? ;)

OK, seeing the "freeze frame" of the video above I have to admit: Big Sam has "the ideal looks" to be the coach of the Three Lions, he looks like a british bulldog. :D
