Agree with most of that, generally. We are historically a second tier team.

I would say, 'getting a go (or two)' is a bit harsh when we have spent 20 odd years playing in the top flight. The three years leading up to the Second World War we were challenging for the title finishing runners-up, 4th and 3rd. We won a war cup and were in the first two FA cup finals after the war, we had a good side and who knows what might have happened for us had the war not happened when it did.

Just your original post made it sound like everyone sees Portsmouth and Blackburn as big fish but I don't think that's necessarily true.

well, several goes over the past century then, I can't really look down my nose on anybody's top flight pedigree, maybe big fish was the wrong term as Charlton would probably also seem like big fish at this level. However as for everyone else chipping in, anyone who has tell you why they're a big club, isn't a big club.

When I was about eight I had a model of the Valley, and, I seem to remember that for a long time after the war it held the record for attendance (the actual ground not my model)

Our record attendance is just over 75,000 which was pre-war. Not sure if that was a record at any point but our East terrace was the biggest in England for a while.

Haha we are a small club. Not doing too badly though are we?? Done better than you in the last ten years. We are on a par with the likes of Rochdale, Hartlepool, Mansfield, Colchester, Wycombe etc. Bigger than Fleetwood though,

I can’t really understand why my fellow Millers are getting involved in this debate.

In estimated size we are clearly a mid-ranked team in this league and having suffered the administrations and near closure like we have in our recent past.
You would have thought/hoped we would at least have the class to not gloat about our supposed superiority over some of the perceived smaller clubs.

TBH, I am surprised Walkley Owl hasn’t posted having a good laugh at our expense.

After all we never stop bleating about “The Massives” claiming they are something they are not.

And yet here we are doing exactly the same thing. Football fans are weird aren’t they?

We are all what we are, being smaller doesn’t stop you winning football matches and anyway we are all supporters of these clubs because they were chosen for us, usually inherited from immediate family.

I don’t know how we will do this year but I’m pretty sure we will lose to some of the smaller teams and beat some of the bigger ones, but these games will be decided on goals not past glories or the size of the crowd watching.
Why snipe at me? You've got a little crush on me haven't you, just cos I don't feel the same mate don't get all uppity on the internet. Have a werthers and a nice nap.

Getting involved because some Scunthorpe muppet reckons we are a bottom 4 club in league 1 which is utter nonsense.

Never said we we're the biggest club in division far from it but everybody else gives the impression that we think we're bigger than we are when thats rubbish.

What excuses?

Is it not true we were wank all season?
Is it not true we played Wednesday a week before Christmas at £40 a ticket and the week after Christmas at Leeds at £40 a ticket?

They're perfectly valid explanations for our poor followings. You see in the real world up north, £40 just for the ticket a week before Christmas isn't feasible for some people as is another £40 just for the ticket a week after Christmas.

F**ks sake SERNWA, are we going to put up with this continuous shite for the whole season (until you reach your natural level in the 4th tier)

Think you got the wrong end of the stick, perhaps you should read it again, for the life of me I can't think why you believe I'm sniping at you.

Disappointing I know, but I don't like Werthers, oh and I don't really have a crush on you either....sorry!
I'll take the nap though...thanks.

I absolutely love the irony of all these clubs scrambling to be acclaimed the biggest.

Surely, being the biggest club in L1 also means that you are the most underperforming club, relative to size. So carry on chums...keep admitting how rubbish you are.

Having said that, I'd forgotten just how utterly tedious the Rotherham fans were. It makes reading Firthy's claptrap worthwhile. Makes you realise just how close to the truth the Python lads were with the Four Yorkshiremen sketch.

Well said my Dale chum

All the best

We got 8,000 for our derby last season on a Monday night and on sky. Apart from that though I agree we aren't bigger than Rotherham.

Worth adding that the game was made strictly all ticket, (our fans are shite at buying tickets). And the said fixture came on the back of 6 straight defeats whilst our fans were quickly losing faith with our deluded, incompetent former manager.

No issue with Bury. Always bring a decent, vocal following to Rotherham and were one of the only clubs that made a racket at Don Valley.

Bizzarely I have fond memories of the Don Valley, the 1-1 draw in 08/09 with Sodje's last minute header turned a forgettable evening into an enjoyable drive home. Then there was the 0-0 in 2011, a good away day had around Sheffield then a very entertaining 0-0 draw was played out to a good atmosphere. Sadly I am unsure if I can make it to the new ground this season as I return from holiday the day before.

You're speaking like a true Bury fan, now. Contentment with a few 0-0 draws!

You must be the only person I've known that says they liked the trips to Don Valley. Truly a depressing time for our football club.

Depressing enough doing an exam in there. Couldn't imagine watching a football game there.

Who in your opinion is the biggest club in league one,not historically but who you personally think the biggest is and why? Thanks.
The question is not about history, so I will look to the season ahead. Thus, I am looking at who is the biggest threat to take 6 points off Scunny? That's all that matters to me. Points.

There is nearly always a threat from at least one side coming down and I have to say Wigan this time, who is a bogey side for us. Blackburn has a very poor manager IMO and Rotherham is a team that more than not we do well against.

Of the teams coming up, I am going to choose Donny and Blackpool as threats. Both always seem to up their games against us. Portsmouth and Plymouth will be favourites to do well and there is usually a team that does very well, but I suspect they will find it harder than maybe some think.

There was no-one who took 6 points off us last season and if we can translate much of that into the new season (hopefully), we'll do well again. We are often underestimated, but all teams who know us in this league will be expecting us to be difficult and dangerous opposition again.

BIGGEST threat to take 6 points of us is WIGAN in my book. Hope I have answered your question, Bobby.

At least we didn't lose each time :2thumb:

I thought you were one of the best sides we played last season. Very surprised that you were not with us in the top 6. Did you raise your game(s) against us or were you totally inconsistent during the season? I think you'll seriously challenge this season. Let's see if we can actually beat you this time around :bg:.

I think you were just unfortunate that you happened to play us on one of our better days in the league, although from memory you did batter us in the second half at The Valley.

As for the cup game, simply - Ademola Lookman.

What putting southerners out of touch with the real world in their place?

Our natural level based on historical league positions is this division. Unlucky though.

I was referring to the constant stream of shite that you post on here. I have nothing against Rotherham, but you give the more reasonable posters on here a bad name.

Blackburn has a very poor manager IMO

Well, everyone's allowed an opinion but under Mowbray our poor quality, demoralised squad only lost 3 out of 15 games last season and we went down on an abnormally large number of points on the last day after spending the vast majority of our time under Coyle in the bottom 3. He's far from very poor based on his time at Rovers.

Fair enough. Let's see how he copes this coming season. He'll be expected to take you straight back up and he ought to as well. Your quality should be enough for an automatic place.

I'm unconvinced about Mowbray. Think Wigan will become a yoyo club between the second and the third. I think we'll finish midtable and Charlton will be up there but Bradford won't find the form of last season.

In terms of biggest to smallest clubs, for what it's worth, I'd rank as follows...

1. Charlton
2. Blackburn
3. Pompey
4. Bradford
5. Bristol Rovers
6. Oxford
7. Millers
8. Plymouth
9. Oldham
10. Wigan
11. Blackpool
12. Peterborough
13, Gillingham
14. Southend
15. Northampton
16. Walsall
17. Wimbledon
18. Bury
19. Shrewsbury
20. Donny
21. Scunthorpe
22. Rochdale
23. MK
24. Fleetwood

A single 0-0 draw because it was a decent game of football.
I said I have good memories of the ground, not that I particularly like my trips there. And that had as much to do with the day out as it did the footy as well.

I agree that some 0-0's can be highly entertaining. I remember one at Springfield Park, Wigan, which was scoreless because both goalies (Welch for Dale, Farnworth for Wigan) had blinders, competing with each other to pull off worldies in turn. Incidentally, Springfield Park was nearly as big a tip as the Don Valley Arena - maybe goalies are scared of nice stadia :)
