So after the shock departure of Page to Northampton we start to hunt for the replacement.

O'Driscoll, Brown and Adkins seem high on the bookies early running.

Adkins would be my choice, needs to rebuild his career but would he take a big pay cut on what he's been used to at places like Sheff United? Followed by the chairman on Twitter a couple of days ago. Anything in it?

Michael Brown seems likely, internal appointment and seems a popular choice (surprisingly in my view) on our forums. Would be a gamble but would surely get 100% out the players every week... Maybe a more physical approach under him.

O'Driscoll could be possible but has had a very poor recent record after years of success.

Micky Adams... Available and close to the chairman... Backwards move but our most successful manager since Rudge. Knows the club inside out likely to be in Smurfs thoughts I'd expect at least.

Cotterell and Rosler in the top end off the odds too. Cotterell surely less popular being ex Sjoke and although did well as with Rosler only with huge financial backing.

Let the speculation begin!

Be interesting to see how much Smurf is willing to pay. Adkins, Cotterill, Rosler, all would be expensive you'd have thought. Can't see what Adams would get from coming back, he left under a bit of cloud last time rather than his 1st departure when his stock was high.

I can see Brown getting it. Cheap roll of the dice that could pay off. Or he could be another David Dunn who was a complete disaster.

Brown as manager, with Adams as assistant on a short term deal to help him get going?

Given the financial prudency the Vale chairman has implemented over the last few years, I'd be amazed if this was anything other than an in-house appointment, or something that is perceived as the 'cheap option'. Could be a good thing though, as long as the manager is given backing by the fans.

No to all the usual retreads like O'Driscoll, not sure how many more jobs guys like this have to fail in before clubs stop appointing him. And especially no to going back to Adams again. The football at the end of his last reign was a complete eyesore.

Cotterill would never come here, we couldn't afford him I'd have thought. The Stoke thing is irrelevant though as he walked out on them after a month or two.

It'll be Michael Brown, let's be honest. Cheap and easy option.

Please let it be Adkins or Rosler. Never going to happen though is it. Smurf has regularly spoken about the budget being slashed, so surely there isn't any money to go and get a high profile manager.

This could go horribly wrong or brilliant. There's no in betweens at this club.

Don,t think there is any question Brown will get it as cheap and cheerful ' in house' appointment.
One who seems to not of been mentioned is Ainsworth, despite playing only 70 odd games he is revered at Vale. look at the reception he got when we went to Wycombe. A bit of passion and i think it would actually get the fans excited again.
Any talk of Adams is insane. He left once, came back, yes with great success but then spat all his dummies out, took Tranmere to non-league and ended up at Sligo Rovers.
We all know it is going to be a cheap skate but please not O'Driscoll, the bloke bores me to tears. Rosler, Cotterill and others are utter fantasy land as we haven,t a pot to pee in.
All i hope is that whoever it is can be allowed to re-evaluate the offer of contracts to Pages' chosen few, maybe he wants Yates , Birchall etc at Cobblers as they are great characters.
At least i won,t have to hear the quote' we go again ' after another painful 1-0 away loss with no shots or positivity.

Rosler is expected to have some sort of 'advisory' role with us when our German takeover is confirmed

I'd bet on Adams or Brown getting it to be honest.

Brown could be a great appointment or could be a flop mind.

I found this funny because you called Stoke, Sjoke.

Seriously?

Its the good old footy bantz fella! I am going to sound like a grumpy old man here but some of the nicknames' that fans give their rivals is a bit cringy. Sjoke is particularly bad given the current statuses of both sides.

We are no better, we have a sensational nickname for our rivals.......... Poxford, how about that for genius!!

Back on topic, its league 1 managerial merry go round at the moment. Here's a name a bit out of left field, John Coleman at Accrington. He's done fantastically well this season, Accrington are losing a number of players and he may fancy a shot up a level?

Agombar, no thanks to Coleman, he did diddly squat at Rochdale indeed turned them into nasty piece of work in his brief tenure.

We won,t look outside the box as such as we don,t have the proverbial pot to pee in. Unable to take a manager under contract as can,t pay compo.
Sadly it will be Brown, that is nothing against him as he is whole hearted commited ( aggresive ) bloke but no experience whatsoever.
Just been on Bet Victor and some of the names are incredible, it is a fresh start whoever ends up with it, just wonder the legalities of the retained list as Page offered deals to some utter turd ( his yes men ) , so i hope the offers can be retracted so the new guy has a blank canvas.

Get this. We call Peterborough, Pish or Shitborough. Genius.

For what it's worth, If Vale had an issue with the type of football Page played then they would utterly hate Gareth Ainsworth. Adkins was on around £400k at Sheffield United so I'd be amazed if Vale could get anywhere near that.

Bowyer might be a good shout, did half decent job at Blackburn under mental owners.

Well he will have good contacts etc I dare say but no idea how he would do!

Let's be honest whether he has good contacts or not Smurthwaite will do most of the signings anyway himself. Wouldn't put it past him to appoint himself actually.

Nelza, as someone who only sees the goals on Channel 5, what sort of game do Wycombe play ?
Maybe it is rose coloured spectacles as he is ex Vale legend and still loved by us lot.
This is why it is such a great game, differing opinions and suggestions.
As i said on your boss thread i aint an issue with Page think he decent bloke and tried his best with limited resources, for me this will sound crazy but i,d prefer us to lose 5-2 giving it a real go than the 1-0 dross we had to endure on our travels.
Maybe with more transfer kitty he will come into his own at Cobblers, realistically in your first season you just want mid-table solidity.
You may do a Burton given you won the league blindfolded but i reckon security is first aim.
Ps we haven,t scored from a corner for ages and couldn,t defend them either :dk:

Well he will have good contacts etc I dare say but no idea how he would do!

At this level I would say having contacts can be beneficial. In recent years because of his football contacts, Lee Power (our chairman) has managed to get decent loanees from Premiership sides. This season the lads we had from Liverpool were very unlucky with injuries but I think at one stage or another this season, all of them appeared in the Liverpool first team this season, which shows we can get decent young loanees in. Brad Smith who we had on loan the season before last is back up to Moreno as LB at Liverpool. Mason and Pritchard at Spurs another 2 that we have had recently.

Ok, they won't always work, but we have had more success than failure with our signings since LP came in.

Dan, feel free to shoot me down!

Getting the 'legends' back as managers hasn't particularly worked well in the past so my gut feeling would be to avoid that.
Adams returning is unlikely and unnecessary, particularly as he seemed to split the fans even when he was proving to be a success. Adkins would be a good appointment for us, particularly as he will have something to prove now.

The names currently listed on oddschecker don't particularly jump out as exciting although I've always liked Martin Allen as a manager. Also, Ian Holloway could bring some entertainment to press conferences and such.

The likelihood is that we will appoint from within and that is likely to be Brown. Will it work? Only one way to find out I suppose, but if we do head down this route and it goes tits up, hopefully those who have spent the last season moaning about Page and even calling for his head will look back and realise what stability he was bringing to our onfield activities

I think we'd be happy to just consolidate this coming season and even for another season or two. Of course we could do a Burton, I'd suggest it is a tough thing to do though, especially as League One looks stronger next season.

Ainsworth and Wycombe, horrific. Think Graham Westley mark two. Perhaps Ainsworth has to play that way at Wycombe due to their budget constraints and it is the only way they can be competitive. Horrible to watch, lots of underhand tactics, a lot of time wasting which results in most of their games having massive amounts of 'injury' time. That all said, the last time they played at Sixfields, they weren't as bad as usual!

Wycombe are pretty much despised by other League 2 club fans for the niggly nasty cynical style of football they play. Think of a Peter Taylor side that always retreated into its own half after going a goal up, add a load of gamesmanship, time-wasting and cynical fouling and you have Wycombe's style of play to a tee. They scored 45 league goals last season, fewer than relegated Dagenham or York.

Suprised as Ainsworth got legendary status at the club in just 12 months for his flair and quality!

The only flair he shows as Wycombe boss is in his dress sense when he is in the dug out!

Michael Brown as manager does not appeal to me one bit. Too much of a risk.

No more of a risk than Page was I guess.

If Brown came in as manager i would be ok with this as long as we get a decent experienced number 2 in to advise him.

Or would it be better to get a decent, experienced number 1 in and let Brown learn from him in a number 2 role?

Page was Adams' assistant for a while and worked with Wales.

Some suggestions that maybe we could give Brown/Ainsworth the role with John Rudge coming as DOF, depends if he would want to do that being in his 70's now. To bring the great man (lets face it he is to us what Sir Alex/Clough/Paisley are to their respective past clubs) would surely get the buzz back at the club.

Another possible outcome is Micky Adams comes as a DOF to Brown, Smurf clearly thought a lot of Adams and believe they are still close.
