One of the best ever villa away days was at hillsborough when big Ron returned. Opening day of the season and we had the whole end behind goal. Older villa fans still talk about that away day.

It was fucking shit.

Better a few seasons later when Humphreys volleyed in.

You would say that. Yep I remember that little twat scoring, didn't he bang a few in that season? Any older owls on here remember villa getting promoted back to the first division in the mid-late 70s at hillsborough. Midweek game and we had 16k there, also took your kop off you for the night. before my time but it's another game some older villa fans talk about.

Palmer debut?
Could be right, would never have remembered without you saying it, but now something in back of my head saying your right. Pretty certain we lost 1 nil, wasn't really a memorable day, only the shit support (about 3k in all I think, for a top flight match, dodgy memory thou) and shitty weather, remain in my head.

Cant remember it, but have read about it a few times. You and Man U the only teams to "take" our kop, although apparently they did a better job. Many others tried but got kicked off. Those 2 are the biggest away supports at Hillsborough (Man U over 20k). The biggest I can remember in my time (78 - now) were Newcastle 83/84 Keegan, Beardsley, Waddle etc about 14/15k in a 2nd division crowd of over 42k and somewhat bizarrely given they normally struggle to bring 2k Coventry in the cup QF 86/87 similar numbers (though I missed it due to work £26 YTS fxxk me). The best I have seen though were Rangers for a friendly other year. Newcastle best English fans I have seen at Hillsborough thou. Sure Villa had only 4k for big Rons return, didn't think bottom had re-opened after disaster, could be wrong though.

The worst following following we've had in recent years is 2 years ago at reading on a Tuesday night- 266 I believe.

United were animals back in the day. We had the bottom tier too for big rons return, I swear we did?? Rangers are the only team to take the holte end, they must of had 25k at ours for a friendly and were out of control .

We took 551 to Cardiff about 10 years ago to a midweek bubble trip don't really remember taking less than 1000 to Villa, the only one i can think of it being was the full members cup game when platt scored.

In complete contrast they (Rangers) were fantastically behaved at Hillsborough, only got 6k tickets but sold em all and had plenty in our ends too even though it was midweek and our end was all ticket too. They never stopped singing were exceptionally friendly before, during and after match and made lots of new friends in Sheffield.

it was early 90s after you had won the league, so maybe 91-92 or more than likely it was 92-93. It definitely looked like you had less than 1k there but maybe I'm wrong. It's the only time I can remember Leeds bringing a small following to villa as you normally sell out or are close to selling out. When we used to come to you we usually only had the corner which if I remember could hold 1700 ish, although a couple of times we had behind the goal. It's not a ground we always took big numbers to on a regular basis, the biggest following we ever had up Leeds was in the cup in 87 I think when we had 6k behind goal and also a few scattered about in home ends but they kept quiet.

I was on the leppings upper that game and I've never seen a better atmosphere anywhere in this country or abroad for that matter. It was a brilliant day and night out on West Street. Superb club superb fans. watp.

Yes, they can be and having seen Wednesday twice play friendlies against Rangers and once against Celtic, I know which side of the divide are the friendlier nicer people. That's not to mention the best fans I have ever seen.

Our first test of the season regarding our away support, Barnsley away midweek. Been allocated 5500 at £30 a ticket. Went on sale the other day and there is still 5 weeks until game so plenty of time to shift then. Our form will dictate what we take up there but I'd say we will have atleast 3k if we hit a bad run and possibly sell out if we carry on as we are or start doing really well.

Our allocation for Ipswich has sold out. 2.000 allocation at £37 a ticket. Why is it such a small allocation? As far back as I can remember that's all you get allocated and it's not often they let fans on the bottom tier. I've gave this one a miss.

one if the most least appealing away days in English football imo. And a tad overpriced.

It's always been expensive even before everyone else started charging joke prices. It's actually a decent trip if you go on train there's plenty of boozers, the ground is a proper football ground and it's fairly central. Even better when you go for the weekend and your nearest rivals get relegated live on tv. How times have changed since that day though.

Yes, times really started to change at Megsons last match in charge. The Derby that didn't matter, according to some of your fans. It does seem to go in cycles in though, just hope it doesn't this time and we can remain as Sheffield's top team. (We will always be the top club though) ;-)

Blademan, when you went to Eindhoven did you get tickets? If so where from? Have seen us in Europe, very much doubt it will happen again, (ok I know it wont) so wouldn't mind going abroad with Rangers myself.

No we didn't have tickets. We sneaked in the ground through the main entrance. Become a member at rangers go to a couple of long distance trips abroad where not many go and you guarantee yourself one for any bigger games. May take a few years to get high up in the list
