119 iron at the mill tonight in a total crowd of 928

Another win for the Stags 3-2 this time, but looks like Scunny are out and Lincoln scrap through

Think Stags will go all the way to Wembley and Adam will be jumping on the bandwagon ( I mean the train from Manchester)

Walked past the ground tonight. Looked empty on the Big Bank. Turns out there were 700 home fans.
The good thing is that a few kids got a game, and one of them got his first senior goal for us.
We topped the group. Oh well.

The draw sets up a horrible possibility... the way it works means Vale play host to one of:

Macclesfield
Bury
Man City U21

Or

Stoke City U21!

This ultimately means potentially a large crowd, guess the lardies will watch it but more for me the fact we are forced to then play our hated rivals reserves in a competitive fixture!

Macc Town or Bury will do.

I genuinely forgot we even had a game in this last night until I read this thread. Just checked and we lost 3-2 to Newcastle kids so we’re out.

Devastated. :woo:

So the next round will be our seventh Tuesday game in a row, mental it’s like the conference all over again.

We’ve got a similar issue - we could get Peterborough, Northampton, Arsenal U23s or Spurs U23s.

On the other hand, we could get Bristol Rovers or Newport. Fingers crossed.....

I hope for the club we get that far, no-one deserves the run for the finances more than JR.

I don't agree with the cup, which appears to be shared by many others - but if it brings in money for the club and the Radford's, in hindsight I can't really begrudge it too much.

We're away at Sunderland, Accrington, Shrewsbury or Rochdale.

Must been more local away games than that we could get!

I’m really worried we are going to go quite far this year, only benefit being the money.

Aren’t there eight northern groups so in theory you could get a winner in any of the other seven?

No.

Essentially if in Group A,B,C or D you play a team from E,F,G or H, if you win the group you get a home tie against a runner up hence we know the four possibilities for us.

You'd think so, but apparently not. Can't say I've checked, mind!

EDIT - vale's explained it for me.

Every year the Premier League amend the rules to ensure that an even greater proportion of the money in football goes to them and not to us, then they offer us a tiny amount of that money if we play ball with their kids, we can't always afford to turn it down on principle by not trying to qualify from the group stage, but Shaun Harvey is a complete arsewipe for claiming that this is somehow good for the lower leagues because it means the Premier League give us some of their money.

Why have they done that then?! This competition baffles me at every stage.

In fact, that’s even worse for us - Peterborough, Northampton and Arsenal U23s plus Wimbledon in second in the other side of the draw. Mass potential for a “glammer tie”....

I assumes it a simplified way of ensuring you don't play the runner up in your own group possibly?

I don't agree with it anymore than you, and wholeheartedly agree - for me if we get knocked out in the next round then great, happy days - but I guess the money is useful for the clubs also. It's not even an official competition

Oh, so on that basis we've won of Bury, Macclesfield, Stoke under 21 or Man City under 21's

Yay

Mansfield were already through before the Scunthorpe game so I imagine he will revert back to fringe first team and a few youth unlike yesterday which was full of Academy products.

Not really bothered who we get.

We play Donny tonight, I expect an inflated attendance due to people wondering who and how they will play.
Still shouldn't be more than 1300 mind. We have to win by no more than 1 or draw/lose to go out.

Yeah I get that. But in not forcing, for example, winner of A to play 2nd in B, they have to do the draw “manually” anyway so they could have just done the draw for the whole thing like they do in the champions league.

Nah humbug, stupid bloody tournament. The fact we got knocked out of the only two proper cups in the first round and having such a lacklustre season makes me even more pissed off that we got through our group in this thing.

The players are released. Or Donny can’t be bothered or sent the kids.

Either way :)

Total bonus result that, to the extent that I didn't even realise that we could still qualify until we just did. Hat-trick for Dennis should give him some confidence as well.
