8mill. Cheap for a premier league keeper. Though technically a 3rd choice one I suppose.
Maybe higher than that as Buffon is looking to call it a day probably after the world cup next year. Good move for Szcesny though, learning from the best and with a top club.

I personally think he's just getting more money to bench warm for a couple of years

The saves per game bit.

So you really think saves per game is an indicator of how good a goalie is. Making one that has no saves, and concedes no goals worse than someone who had 5 saves and concedes 5 goals?

It's statistics gone mad.

Does anyone?

Dunno, he was the most expensive defender of all time when he was signed.

But if the whole forum thinks he is rubbish - then good, I'm in full agreement. He'll do a Rodwell soon enough.

Walker is not rubbish. Walker is not worth £45m.

Not everything has to sit on the extremes.

We were talking about Stones, not Walker.

But yes, on Walker he's a good Premier League RB but hasn't performed at CL level yet. Maybe he will, maybe he won't. I'm more in the latter category to be honest.

Not terribly relevant as it was an end of season international, but he was the worst outfield player on the pitch against Scotland.

Stones, meanwhile, is rubbish. He will either eek out a career as a Man City squad player or tumble towards to a mid table / bottom EPL team.

My mistake.

I don't rate Stones particularly highly either. He's a defender that isn't very good at defending and Pep is possibly the very last big manager on earth to help develop that side of his game.

You do know that it was a tongue in cheek post, don't you?
Anyway, epic knew how it and which one was meant. That's sufficient ;)

Zouma signs a six year new contract and goes out on loan to Stoke for the season.

Should get plenty of playtime to get back upto speed for us when he returns as that injury he had really set him back.

Morata to Chelsea confirmed. £70mio.

Even by today's market standard, that's a proper waste of money. The bloke has done nothing but play for big clubs. If you're going to throw money around like that, add another £10mio and get Lukaku.

Sorry, you probably didn't get the reference. Wasn't a dig. (Dirk Wears White Sox is an Adam and the Ants album. Forget everyone is not as old as me, or as musically literate.

I really missed that one and that although I really liked some Adam and the Ants songs back in the days but never bought a record (pre CD days for those younger ones here.I think I am at least as old as you, maybe even older ;))

I never bought an Ants album either (just singles) but I am musically literate and old enough to remember Feethams (as I see you are a Darlington fan) - I walked round it in 1980 when visiting with Aldershot.

I know mate it's almost like there's something other than pure ability that that can also affect transfers sums.

Suggestions for something other:
desire to leave
financial situation of the buyer
seller's knowledge of buyer's financial situation
financial situation of the seller
buyer's knowledge of seller's situation
possibility to replace for seller
possibility to go for alternative for buyer
potential return on investment
wages
length of contract
release clause
incorrect quoting of prices in the media

But imo we should ignore all that and continue to compare apples and oranges forever.

Pretty amazing that City have broken the record fee for a defender twice within about a week. How's about bringing a transfer or wage cap in lads? ~£130 million on wing backs in the space of a week, their starting defence including Ederson is now worth £217 million - this is all getting a bit silly. Quite a decent chance that one of Walker and Mendy will be a flop at City too, though I guess that's why they have the Danilo insurance.

Though saying Mendy isn't much better than Robertson is probably a bit of a stretch. What has Robertson ever done to show he's in the same league as Mendy in terms of quality or potential? He's a decent player.

Exactly. Robertson is a standard left back. Ok nothing more. Mendy had one decent season after being bough for a similar fee the year before. He's certaibly better than robertson but is he 6 times better. Price would indicate he is. Perhaps im wrong and he'll cotinue to improve given age its possible. 23 is young for a lwft back to continue to develop. But at this point he isnt worth the money paid. Hes not that level of improvement. He's not, for example a mid twenties cole or evra who might of comanded the fee paid if they were that age today.

Neither is Kyle Walker though to be fair! It's a brave new world of transfer dealings and as Bilo pointed out, there are many variables that will inflate or deflate a player's price tag. Mendy has only shown us one great season, but he did it at the very highest level, whilst Robertson acquitted himself well for...Hull. One was in very high demand, the other not so much. I don't really have an issue with Mendy going for six times the price. Mendy could turn into an Evra or a Cole, Robertson won't.

One of the biggest variables is "Are Man City interested?" Because they don't give a fuck, they'll pay anything.
