Preston at home for us - we've avoided them in the cups until now.
A tough one for us although we had a great time in this competition last year beating Bradford and Burnley before narrowly losing away at West Ham.

Rotherham away and a possible reunion with Lee Frecklington.

We had some decent results in the League Cup when we were last here - Derby and Crewe wins a home stick in my mind.

After our cup runs last season anything less than a semi final appearance will surely be a disappointment :bg:

A good 12 years since that 5-1 humiliation in our final season as a Championship club. Think that was Juan Ugartes only start for us and you had Nat Brown and Gareth McAuley at the back playing like warriors!

Have you forgotten about playing Chesterfield already?

Ha, ha. Hope the Chesterfield fans don't think I was taking the mick as Saturday was clearly very competitive. I was alluding to home fixtures of course!

I have no idea what team we will put out. You could argue that so early in the season the players still need match practice so perhaps Nathan Jones could well pick the most of Saturdays team. Personally I'd like to see McCormack, Shinnie and Stech rested (after his knock), and Rea brought in for Sheehan.
I suspect Ipswich will also rest a few. In that case a narrow win for us.

I've wanted us to get Villa in a cup game for years so I was buzzing when the draw came out, unfortunately though I can't make it now that it was moved for the tele which is highly annoying. This must be what it's like to be a genuine fan of a top flight team having your fixtures pulled around all the time.

As for the game, by all accounts if we play/defend like we did on Saturday we'll get a tanking. Hopefully we'll carry on when we left off from with our home form this season though and put in a good show. Not sure what sort of line up to expect from Villa.

Hopefully Bolton rest a few Le Fondre, Madine ect. We might have half a chance then. Our record in the 1st round of this isn't too bad actually.

Leeds away on Wednesday.

Should be a routine 2 or 3-0 job but you never know.

Professional performance, create a few chances ourselves and keep the score down and I'm happy.

Going to Hillsborough tonight. Hoping not to get battered. A surprise win or taking it the distance would erase some of Saturdays result, but my dee daah mate tells me that they might play close to full strength, such was the out cry at their first result..

If that's the case, I'm saying 3 nil to the pigs.

I wouldn't rule out any league 2 side against Championship opposition in round one of the league cup, we have taken a few Championship sides out and have been a Championship side taken out. I would not be gobsmacked if Vale push Leeds all the way, and I certainly would not be gobsmacked if we take out Bolton at home.

Yeah. Hard to disagree there mate. I would fancy our chances more at home though.

You're a real dark horse for me this season, along with ourselves. We'll both be up there, IMO.

I would agree with that, I think you have the bigger squad and we may still need to bring in a few loan faces, but a couple of our kids may step up. Imagine an Alex/Vale play off semi or even a final. It would be mental :bg:

Blackburn at home for us and the return of two of the architects of our relegation, Tony Mowbray and Mark Venus. Robins has said he'd like to play a consistent line-up but may have to make a few changes to protect players from injury. Not sure what sort of threat Blackburn will be, as their starting XI is very good on paper, but there is the question of who is going to play and have to take in mine their disappointing result at the weekend.

That would be the worst 90/180 minutes possible.

Would hate to be on the losing side. Would be unbearable.

Worried about tonight, can see mk going for it after a disappointing game from them on Saturday, we're not that good at defending and only good at attacking when we want to be so will probably end 6-3 to the fake wombles.

We've managed to lose our last 9 or 10 on the bounce against Rotherham, so I'm not overly optimistic!

Charlton are apparently changing 11 of their players for tonights match regardless of any possible fine.

Glad to see they are taking this competition as seriously as it should be!

Only three things are certain in life.
Death, taxes and being knocked out of a cup competition by Scunthorpe once a year.

Having treked across the Somerset Levels and got a few decent photos this morning, I'm now in residence on Gloucester Road, preparing to take on the Gas in what is likely to be a pretty competiive reserve match. I'm thinking a 3 - 1 loss and on to Carlisle at home

We'll probably make up to 6 changes from Saturday's team (pretty thin on options in defence until Halliday is back and we get in another CB). I gather Bristol have similar plans driven by injuries and a belief that whoever they put out will beat us (according to the local rag).

I did a double-take when I thought Rory Gaffney was serving my first pint at the Wellington........until he spoke. He has a double.

Bloody hell Alan you should've put a NSFW precursor on that message! Shudder.
Apologies to fellow U's.

The double is quite a pleasant, friendly, well spoken, young chap and pulls a decent pint.

Home to Charlton which is winnable especially if they make a number of changes.

Personally I'd like us to switch around a few players with a tough game at Swindon this Saturday. Perhaps bring in Holmes, Harley, Croll and rest Reid, Taylor and JMT.

Exeter to win tonight is my bet of the evening.

Yep, Exeter've got a good chance of knocking out Charlton. Other L2 sides who IMO also stand a decent chance of going through are Coventry(vs Blackburn), Luton (vs Ipswich) plus Mansfield and Lincoln if Rochdale and Rotherham play their kids.

I could swan along to Norwich tonight as it is only a tenner, but the atmosphere is always crap there.

I reckon we will lose tonight, we're too big for the League Cup these days.
