Nice to see some fresh faces. A fair few stepping up from the U20s. 1-2 stepping up from the successful squad that won the Toulon Tournament (including ex Dagger Joe Worrall!)

It's a squad that has real potential to grow over the next 2 years. Alexander-Arnold, Cook, Davies, Calvert-lewin among others will be pushing for the senior squad soon.

Interesting to see Chalobah in the seniors but Loftus-Cheek in the U21s, I'd always had RLC as the better of that pair. Although Chalobah did look decent at the weekend.
I find that U21 squad genuinely hard to pick a best 11 from, which is good. Lots of options.
Nice milestone for Bournemouth having players in all 3 of the senior, U21 and U20 squad for the first time.

What's happened to Baines? I know he's 32 now but he's better than Creswell.

No real surprises in the squad, well earned call up for Maguire and a good chance for Chalobah to gain some proper international experience.

What is it with Southgate constantly picking Jake Livermore who is absolute dross, surely we have players who are as good if not better in that position who are at a younger age, i just don't get it.

He has a few favourites. You can see him, Chalobah and Lingard being a part of the squad regardless unless there's an immense drop of form or someone else becomes essential

Fair point but must have thought he looked good enough in the Under 21s etc.

Like Lee says probably been one of those touted for a while by the management.

Now Chalobah has played a couple of games and will probably get regular 1st team football now is the perfect excuse to bring him in.

Yeah, might just be using him as an example to the others in the u21s. Not that we've got loads of options currently anyway.

That squad is in transition. Really poor group in reality. We don't have a single world class player in there.

Lallana is England's best player by a mile. Fucking Chalobah and Livermore ahead of Jack Cork?? The mind boggles

Don't mind Chalobah because he's an incoming talent but Jake Livermore is a joke how he constantly gets selected and not only that but gets picked to play in the first team. Must be sucking Southgates cock i reckon.

Sterling!
He is like the quick kid at school who has no footballing ability, apart from being able to run fast, so gets put on the wing...:ffs:

Sort of puts the complaints about Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney generation into perspective. Yeah, they didn't fulfil expectations; didn't fit, were lazy, just a bit lacking compared to the real cream of continental crop, etc. But blimey, at least they were otherwise top class players. The current group suffer from the same England lethargy but lack even that individual bit of spark (Kane, Alli and Rashford aside maybe) that occasionally made you hope.

I always wonder why England, such a large country with a massive football history and proclivity, produces so little top-class players.

We've just come out of a generation where our side was littered with top class players, it still didn't get us anywhere.

Which top-class players? It is no coincidence that English players never succeed in the Spanish or German league. In fact, only very few English players try their luck in Europe's top competitions.

They never tried the Spanish or German league so how do you know.

Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Rooney etc would have walked into most teams in the world.

So why did they never play in the German and/ or Spanish league? I don't consider Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, Ferdinand, Ashley Cole and Rooney as world-class players.
In addition, the national squad of England mostly fails at international tournaments.

They never tested themselves in a new league or different environment.

Premier League greats, rather than generational greats.

Such a dumbass argument.
When those leagues pay players the same or more than you get at Premier league level then players will move.
And if you think Scholes wasn't world class you probably shouldn't comment on football.

That means Messi isn't world class by your logic.

Xavi, Iniesta, Buffon etc weren't world class then.....

Bollocks argument, the Premier League was exceptionally strong during 2000-2010 shown by how often English clubs reached the latter stages of the champions league. Scholes, Lamps, Gerrard, Ferdinand, Cole would have walked into most teams in the world in their time

All those players achieved plenty at international level.

And walked into most teams, certainly, but not all teams. I could see Gerrard being especially vulnerable anywhere where he wasn't treated with the reverence he was at Anfield (see his performances for England). Alonso had a far better career than him, but was given second billing in Liverpool midfield (as was Maschernao).

Ferdinand was only really at the top of the game when alongside Vidic, there were some mediocre years and plenty of mistakes before, and some horror shows afterwards. He didn't have the longevity or consistency as some of his centre back peers from the same era.
