We're not going to do well in tournaments until we get over this fascination of trying to replicate another country's philosophy simply because a once in your generation Barcelona side under Pep were near unbeatable playing like this. I refuse to believe that our players are technically much worse than other countries. They need to be comfortable enough to play in a style that suits them. We have no identity at the moment, none at all, and it's sad to see.

We never seem able to pick are best side, the FA will never have the power to make premiership teams release the players, other players ruling themselves out of the squad. Unlike spain or germany who have a high turn over of under 21 to senior squad, most of our under 21 wont ever get to play for the senior side, so it begs the question how is the under 21's helping us?

The problem is cowardice I think. We won't play our most skilful and technical players and won't commit to football that relies on positioning and awareness and us imposing ourselves on the opposition. As soon as we come up against a better side we're focused almost entirely on how we can stop them with water carriers and maybe nick something at the other end. It's also the case that we're playing with a side that is practically a B Team. I realise that other sides leave top players out too, but of the players starting only two or three would get back into a first choice England U21 side. It's ridiculous. The media only thinks we're taking a good side because qualification was a breeze and they're ignorant of every other country.
