I know it's not the norm to start threads over individual signings but this is an interesting one, And sparks interest in a wider debate.

Jose Baxter is an enigma. The player we had a few years ago is far too good for this league, would walk into any team in league 1 and would make a decent for most championship teams. If he is half the player now he was then we undoubtedly have the best player in the league signed up already.

However there is a very big but. He comes with a lot of baggage. Released from Everton for personal issues we put him back on the right track and he went on to sign for Sheff utd. We thought he had turned his life around. 2 years after his release and a large ban from first team football, we find ourselves together again. A firm fans favourite, if we can get the best out of him and build the team around him we are onto a winner.
If it all goes wrong it's a waste of a wage and probably the end if his pro career.
We are known for giving players a second Chance. Lee Hughes billy Kenny Jose and heavily linked with ched on his release.

So the question is would you sign him given his problems, can he still do the business with him being out of the game for 2 years and how will he fo at this level?

Don't know all the details, but doubt it will work out.

Sounds like the type that needs to get away from the crowd he's been involved with, which is not gonna happen at Oldham. Better to go abroad or something imo.

No reason to suggest it won't work out. We have put him on the straight and narrow in the past and he has a young child now. Nothing makes you grow up quicker than parenthood.
It's more the lack of recent football that's concerning

Was the recent lack of football down to another drugs ban?

A lot of footballers are enigmas, is Baxter, I don't think so, I think hes just been a lad who hasn't appreciated his career, profile and potential.
Hes definitely a gifted player, best in division if he has sorted his head out, maybe becoming a dad will have done this.
Time will tell but potentially a great signing.
I wouldn't expect any fans from other league 2 clubs to give genuine answers, they will look at the negatives as we all do as opposing fans. Most would sign him though in all honesty i would have thought.

So, I don't think hes an enigma just a daft lad who needed to grow up.
Will he be the best in the division, possibly but our new owner will have more signings to come who could be just as good or better in my opinion, he will want us bouncing straight back up if possible.

Ahhh, he'll be fine. Ridiculously stupid to take pingers while on a suspended ban for the same thing, but I get the impression those days are behind him. Everton have been good with him, they re-signed him to play for their reserves, and as has been said he's got a young kid, that'll help him grow up. Hopefully have the same effect that moving back in with his parents had when he signed for us the first time round.

Seems a popular lad in merseyside circles as well, I've seen congratulations from the likes of Yakubu, Tony Bellew and Jamie Carragher on his Instagram post.

As much as he can be effective on the pitch though, it's how much fun he is to watch that I'm looking forward to. An absolute joy.

I would disagree, but its all about opinions......

Baxter undoubted potential, still young with lots to prove......
Beckford getting on and his best behind him,,, nothing to prove...
Maguire don't know much of him in all honesty....,.

Well recommendations don't come much better than Tony Bellew

:D

My point was that he's not some nobhead who everyone hates, he actually seems like a very likable guy.

He was a revelation when he arrived, with his swaggering style with a great desire to win. But when Sheffield United came calling with half a million we couldn't resist. In his 3 full seasons, he's hit double figures from midfield, including playing a weird deeper role for Sheff Utd, and seems to love an FA Cup run. Maybe we'll go on a famous giantkilling march beating the likes of Accrington Stanley.

Worth a punt. He was linked with Rovers, but don’t know if we offered him a deal, he preferred Oldham or Latics were paying more.

He was at Prenton Park for the play-off semi-final last month and is mates with James Wallace, but I don't know whether we ever considered signing him.

Personally I am glad he is not coming here. We are trying to re-establish ourselves as a league club and it is not the sort of gamble I would want us to take.

I went to that 3rd Rd FACup game at Forest. Oldham were shocking first half and should have been five down at half time. However in second half Forest just stopped playing and Oldham somehow won 3-2. The following day Stags lost to Liverpool 2-1 with Oldham being drawn against Liverpool in 4th Round.

Fair point and it's a bit of a stereotype but 'friends with a boxer' goes nicely alongisde his previous drugs bans to fit the profile of a lower league footballer who is talented but a bit of an implement.

If he’s anywhere near the player we faced in League One a few seasons ago, he’ll absolutely take the piss in this league.

He's got to get his head down and work. If he does, he could easily be one of the best in the league. Fingers crossed that's what happens.

Given the article in the Daily Fail about Oldham being the next Orient, wages not being payed etc, is there any risk this will all fall through?

I do find it odd that a fan of Oldham has chosen to nationally expose them.

Fair enough there must be some truth in it, but to me I can’t see anything happening, if AL can pay wages of 11k and effectively write off 500k.. then go and sign high profile players like Baxter I don’t see where the panic is coming from.

Nothing to see here I think.

Keegan is a self-serving arsehole.

THAT SAID: The club has been terribly run in the past, and it is going to take some turning round to get some of the football world back onside. For example, due to repeatedly being over FFP, we now have to run every signing by the EFL to make sure we're not over the limit, rather than the occasional check-up they do on other clubs. There is also a 12-month transfer embargo hanging over us if we are late paying other clubs and the like. We are going to have to run a very tight ship, or face the consequences.

I could go through the Daily Mail article bit by bit and explain why, where and how, but it's not worth my time, I'd rather focus on the present and what's to come. And just have more of a laugh about it all, I'm sick and tired of all the worry and anxiety.

Here is a response from our owner: https://www.oldhamathletic.co.uk/news/2018/june/06062018-abdallah-club-statement/
