Manager to blame, Should have told the players to go enjoy it and have a go and
Give the fans someting to remember.
Hurst had a plan - keep “us”shape for 45 then have a go by bringing on a more creative midfielder (Hunt) to replace search and destroy (Green) and McAtee; only problem was Brighton didn’t cooperate by scoring the second straight after half-time and not letting us have the ball…

Grimsby were really poor in my opinion. Going out with a whimper from minute 1, not even trying to play. Only interested in trying to keep the scoreline down. Admittedly I switched off after an hour as I couldn’t watch another minute, so if they really had a go in the last 30 minutes then fair play, but I doubt.

I realise this will trigger some Grimsby reactions, but I’m only saying it because I expected more from the team.
What Gladders said. You expected more from 15th in League 2 against 7th in the Prem away from home? Get real. We barely play expansive football in league games so we weren’t exactly going to go there all guns blazing and lose by double figure (which we still probably could have done today).

Very proud of this lot though, a top half finish would cap off a relatively successful first season back.

What did you think would happen

Beaten by a much better side but unbelievably proud of the run & today was a celebration of that. A great away end once again and our future secured for years off the back of it. As a football fan, you live for moments like today and we’ve done something most clubs will never achieve in our lifetimes.

Mate you sat back and did nothing while your club nearly died. Don’t be so rude.
Fish gives it out plenty, he can only expect it in return.

We starved the gambler out and had 3,750 in yesterday, I think I contributed.

I didn’t expect you to win, if that’s what your question is getting at… and i never said anything about all guns blazing, did I?

I just thought you could have been a little bit more ambitious. Brighton’s centre backs were being allowed to walk forward with the ball, yeah walk. Sometimes even to the halfway line. Yes they have better players so you can’t be gung ho, but maybe put a little bit of pressure on, and approach it with a little less caution imo.

The score line would have been double. There’s a reason why Grimsby are bottom half of the bottom division and Brighton are close to a final and European place. It was pretty much Brightons first team.

How many times has a league 2 team been beaten by a 10 goal margin in an fa cup match?

Remember they were playing Brighton, not Bayern Munich.

Despite us being quite defensive they still scored 5, hit the woodwork twice and had several other very good chances they should have scored, it could easily have been double figures.

Hurst made two attacking substitutions at half time, which is probably why we lost 4-0 in the second half instead of one.

Also how many times do league 2 sides face a full strength premier league team (especially one near the top of the premier league), it's usually the lge cup or earlier fa cup rounds when they meet and play a reserve side. Only 5 other lge 2 or lower sides have made the quarters and two of those five ties were also 5-0 losses

Expect what in return? You chatting absolute bollocks about free tickets and travel?
I drove the little 500 mile round trip to Southampton in the 5th round on a Wednesday night getting back home just before 5am on Thursday morning.
The reason I didn’t go to Brighton was because all the tickets sold out, which is something as a Scunny fan you will thankfully never have to worry about.

Brighton beat West Ham 4-0 and Liverpool 3-0 recently so can score goals.

They just don't always take their chances.

Genuinely can't tell if you're taking the piss out of yourself or not here mate. Things are worse than I thought if you're clinging onto a sub-4000 home crowd as a means of peacocking!

Thought grimsby did well, brighton away was a thoroughly abysmal draw to say it was the qtrs and grimsby did all they could.

Whereas the contest wasn’t ever in doubt i thought grimsby were worth a goal and the comical own goal at the end was harsh.

Half watched for clues about wednesday but then realised (despite a home win being expected) we’re not brighton oddly.

Well done though, will provide you with plenty of funds!

Just catching up listening to the Radio Humberside coverage from after the match yesterday and I've honestly just heard the following. This a direct quote from the broadcast...

...and we've got a text in here from hellogregory who is a Carlisle fan and he says "I'm absolutely fuming. Why didn't Grimsby just win? Why didn't they score some goals? If they'd have scored a few goals they might have won. I expected them to win by at least two or three. Utterly pathetic. Hurst out."

Yes, and no Telegraph Coupons required either!

Notts have reduced prices for their community day.
I have no idea what you mean by Telegraph coupons. We took 2500 (full price) there last season on the back of eight back to back away defeats.

All joking and obsessed weirdos aside, my genuine take on the match was that for us to have stood any chance whatsoever we'd have needed to be at our best, Brighton would have needed to be off form and we'd have needed some huge slices of fortune. None of those three factors became realities. Anyone saying Brighton aren't that good is just plain wrong and anyone saying we set up too negatively doesn't know what Paul Hurst is about. As has been said further up the thread, he sets us up like that at home to League 2 sides so there was no chance we were gonna go for it. We'd have been demolished even more so had we done that. We press a lot and the most palpable marker of the gulf in class was that when we do that vs League 2 sides they invariably make a mistake at some point, or they need four or five passes to get out of the press and we reset and press again, however when we pressed Brighton they just nonchalantly flicked the ball in a single pass out of the press and took two or three of our players out of the game and were on the front foot and outnumbering us and we were reduced to scrambling the ball away if we got the chance. The speed they moved the ball with and the decision making was just on another level. They might well not be Bayern as someone said, but they're closer to Bayern than we are to them.

Each to their own if you feel the need to come in here and tell us we were crap and didn't go for it, but those tactics got us to the QFs while every other single team in this division and the division above fell. You won't change any Town fans' opinions that every single player on the pitch and Paul Hurst and the staff deserve an immense amount of praise for what was the best cup run from a lower league side since Lincoln's run to the QFs in their Conference winning season. Massively proud of our boys and the reception they got at the full time whistle was nothing short of fully warranted.

Stockport County.
I didn't see the game but I've seen bits of Brighton, they're a very good side and dominate possession against 90% of Premier League sides. Not really a surprise to hear Grimsby weren't exactly knocking it about.

Everyone in this league would have been gubbed by Brighton with the team they put out. I think Brighton will be top 7 this season.

Grimsby had a great run, some memorable games and away trips, first 4th tier side for years to get to the FA Cup Quarter final. Well played boys.

The problem these days is that short of abject incompetence at the Premiership level (Southampton), there is just no way League 2 players can get or keep the ball long enough on a billiard table surface to make it interesting for hellogregory. The days of mud as a leveller at premiership grounds are gone...

...perhaps League 2 clubs or below should be allowed to swap a player to make it interesting, like we used to do as kids, if they'd given us Alexis Mac Allister and we'd given them Kieran Green it might have made better viewing in Carlisle.

1. I haven’t been around long enough to witness the delights of mud on premier league pitches “levelling things up”. But I’ve seen plenty of better efforts than I saw yesterday.

2. I wasn’t viewing it in Carlisle.

As I say, you were playing Brighton not Bayern. You had Anthony Glennon in your team.

All i said was that I thought Grimsby were poor and could have done a bit better, not win but just done a bit better. Didn’t expect my comments to have stained Grimsby’s family honour or something.

What do you want me to say? You were wonderful, a joy to watch. Is that better?

The only point yesterday where I thought maybe it might be our day was when we got to halftime still only 1-0 down. To concede the early goal and then be pretty much penned in for the rest of the half, especially when Mitoma missed that open goal from about 2 yards out just got me thinking it could be our day and we might come out second half all guns blazing and get something. Obviously that never happened though.
