I have the same dilemma. I've decided I'm just going to wait until the series finishes to read them, if I ever do. No point muddling my idea of the 'verse before I need to.

I started reading the books at the end of the 4th series and am still enjoying it.

I can't pretend I know everything that's going on, and would hate to take a test on it, but I am more than able to follow the main characters/plot.

And I had similar issues following the TV show to start with Lee. So much so I used to read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia after every episode to confirm it all to me, for the first 3 series.

As for book 4, it was all new stuff for me, which in itself was pretty exciting. On the whole though, it was pretty dull.

I'm half way through part 1 of book 5 though, and really enjoying it so far.

In the series, she's quite kick ass. I love her battle with the Hound.
That's something that gives me hope about the upcoming series, because it shows changes from the books don't necessarily have to be a bad thing. That scene was awesome!

But then again The Hound > Brienne and all who've watched the show know how that fight went.

I've not read the books either.

The Greyjoys not being in the next series is complete and utter wank.

Yeah, the show has got progressively worse due to ignoring so much of the story and now it's rubbing it in by taking over the books in some aspects this season. I really wish TWoW would get released.

Really? No Greyjoys?
Well disappointed now, one of the great houses and so far all we've seen is 3 (or 4) of them

Not seeing Euron on screen is one of the worst things that'll happen in my life imo

Wait, the Greyjoy stuff isn't going to be in the show?

Seeing as the Greyjoy stuff is pretty much the first thing I think of when I think of how Feast For Crows was the worst book in the series, I can't say I'm all that pissed to hear that.

For me the dull parts in AFFC were mainly Brienne's stuff and Samwell's stuff.. and bits of Cercei's... I still enjoyed the book whilst recognising it was a hell of a lot slower than the other books.

The Greyjoys were very interesting I thought and I was looking forward to seeing Victarion and Euron interacting (if only briefly). I don't know how anyone couldn't find Euron an interesting character after all, he

raped his brother's Salt Wife, he's been to Asshai and has captive warlocks, he has a crew full of mutes whose tongues he cut out and he has a massive dragon-binding horn that kills whoever blows it

I find the Greyjoys interesting and was hoping to see a bit more of them. As Cashis says, Euron alone seems worthy of some screentime.

Ok, yeah, so they weren't all bad. And Euron is a badass. But I sort of hoped they'd rather speed through it all in the TV show, rather than have it dominate as much as the book as it did. While I didn't mind a lot of it, I found a heck of a lot of it dull as well. It seemed to take its time before actually getting anywhere interesting.

But yeah... I guess you're right Cashis, it still wasn't as dull as the Brienne/Samwell/Cercei chapters.

At the end of 3rd book atm, just finished 3 consecutive chapters of Nights Watch stuff Sam-Jon-Sam and straight onto a Sansa chapter, and you say the next book is worst?

You don't like the nights watch stuff? People generally aren't into Sams stuff, but Jon has one of the best storylines I reckon :o

But god yeah, the 4th book is the worst.

I can only hope that due to the (likely) lack of source material and a (hopeful) reluctance to press ahead too far with the story overall, the extra Greyjoy and Martell characters will appear in Season 6. Especially the Greyjoy bit, as they have a big part to play in the plot ahead.

Don't they plan on finishing the show by S7?

I think they did originally intend to do 7 seasons, but they did say recently that they're open to doing more if they needed more episodes to tell the story as they'd like to tell it.

The thing that concerns me about them leaving the Greyjoy stuff out is... well, they're only really looking to cut stuff that isn't important to the main story. Does this mean that all of that Greyjoy stuff in the books, ultimately, doesn't actually go anywhere? :dk:

I think this is where GoT just completely shows it's a mainstream show and doesn't care about pissing off the readers. I'm ok with it but there's going to be that outrage because it's less of an adaptation and more a 'based on the books by...'

I'd be OK with it, if there was some sort of announcement: "we're going to spoiler the shit out of the books" or "the books and show are heading in completely different directions and you can enjoy both on their own terms."

Yeah Jon's stuff is good, but back to back Nights watch stuff got a bit tedious, and like i say the next chapter was Sansa
Also
Tyrion climbs up a 230 odd rung ladder in the dark? After being in a cell for some time?
Bit nitpicky considering everything else that goes on in these novels but that was pretty outrageous

Can't stand the Dany love-fest that the show is.

This remains the best trailer that's been released, imo:

That got me really interested in the show and kind of motivated me into reading all the books after the end of S2.
