Wycombe don't have an academy now either? Good for us I suppose, less local competition.
Yeah. Just not worth it with so many big clubs around.

Hopefully one day we'll go back to it. But I guess we've got to squeeze every penny out that we can for the first team squad at the moment.

Find Brentford's news fairly worrying considering we're planning to upgrade our academy to category two status in the very near future. The first team move into their new training ground this summer and we're building an indoor facility at our current academy base, which will give us the green light to upgrade to category two status. We're hardly flush with cash, especially with our parachute payments ending next summer. When a club like Brentford who will probably have more money in the bank than us can't afford to keep a category two academy running, it worries me whether we can afford to run what appears to be a white elephant. I hope Sharpey and the board have done their research on this.

We must be spending at least £2.5m a season given we're Category One, but i'm fairly sure we're profiting from it. I think we're easily producing enough high quality players per season to get that money back, and we're still not really seeing the real fruits of this as we're only three years into this increased expenditure, and still have our new training ground on the way.

I remember reading that when we sold Gylfi Sigurdsson in 2010, his transfer fee had paid off all of our academy costs up to that point (from 1999).

That Cat 1 must be weighing quite heavily as there are loads of us Cat 2 academies seeking Cat 1 and someone has to lose Cat 1 for one of us to move up.

It's all to do with facilities and expenditure. If you meet the category one requirements (and can prove that you will continue to be able to) then you will get moved up. I'm not sure there's a maximum limit. I believe reviews are only made every two seasons.

The first two years of EPPP there were 22 category one clubs. These past two seasons there have been 24 as Derby and Brighton met the requirements.

I misunderstood then as I thought there were only a certain number of C1 licences issued. We are certainly seeking C1, from C2, in the near future.
Thanks for putting me right.

Kodjia's been called up for the Ivory Coast international squad for the first time. :2thumb:

Though, if he goes to the African Cup Of Nations next summer, we lose him for a month.

I like how our U18s are doing a pre-season tour of Spain, playing the youth teams of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Getafe etc; where as our senior squad are going to Slovenia again to play against some amateur sides.

One day we may go somewhere decent for pre season. Just waiting for the announcement of our yearly friendly with Swansea. Only friendly announced so far is Boreham Wood away.

Our first team coach Chris Davies has joined Celtic to be Bodger's Assistant Manager.

Means Brian McDermott has been here six months and lost his director of football, assistant manager and the first team coach he signed to replace the assistant manager. So I don't think any of the backroom staff are of his choice now..

We're playing a friendly at Reading in pre season, that'll be exciting for all involved I'm sure.
The next day we're playing Cardiff at home (again, like the 3rd year running now)
Imagine both will be a mixture of first team and youth.

And now he's gone too... at this rate we'll have a whole new squad and a whole new set of staff..

We're off to Germany for a tournament, will be playing St. Pauli and Osnabruck in 60 minute games, on the same day. Apparently something the Germans have been doing for a while now. Hoping they announce a couple more games out there, would certainly hope so. Any excuse for a piss up somewhere abroad though!

Oh yea, our pre-season tour of Slovenia was cancelled (probably because it was McDermott's plans) and we're now playing Boreham Wood, Swindon and Bournemouth so far.

So the club are giving the fans the opportunity to rename the North Stand at the Madejski. Could be interesting.. Though the club in the announcement article already said they will not be taking nominations for Standy McStandface seriously :(

Looks like this will be the beginnings of the eventual stadium name change for sponsorship. Just naming the stands to have some relevance to the club.

Can't see this being anything other than the Steve Coppell Stand tbh, and imagine we'll get the chance to decide names for the East and South later. Would be interesting if we got a stand named after Brian McDermott..

Can't see it being anything other than the Matej Vydra stand or maybe Band stand.

As for serious suggestions Steve Coppell stand, Robin Friday Stand or Maurice Evans stand.

We're off to Ireland. Think Rafa was very insistent on staying local (relatively speaking) rather than an extravagant trip to the States like the last couple of years.

Reading coach Eamonn Dolan has died aged 48

He was instrumental of the development of our young players, of which a lot have gone on to play for the first team. The club recently gave the fans the opportunity to rename the North Stand at the Madejski. Can see it now been called the Eamonn Dolan stand.

Possibly the only good thing at the club currently is the academy. Eamonn had been our Academy manager since 2004, a few years after we had set it up. He was the main person behind the most successful part of our club. He built our academy from nothing to competing with the top clubs in the country.

Not only his success on the field, but he was a gentleman who cared deeply for the club.

He was caretaker manager for us briefly between the sacking of McDermott and hiring of Adkins in the Prem, and had it not been for his illness he would have been my first choice for next manager the last two occasions.

Such a shame.. Reckon we'll rename the academy after him. I hope something is done. Sad sad day for the club.
