Given all the political uncertainty ahead, it's comforting to know that one can still rely on Somerset to elect an MP who seems to have escaped from the pages of a P.G. Wodehouse novel.

I notice that the marvellously named Ernie Blaber and Wera Hobhouse were two of his opponents. What a fabulous place

^ Did anyone predict a Tory majority...?

I did, mainly out of pessimism rather than anything. Coming into the election I could only see a Conservative win but as the campaign went on I thought they'd fucked it.

Sadly they clearly didn't.

Tiredness kicking in now. Need to power on through. Last major event I want to see is Farage in Thanet South.

I don't know shit about politics, but doesn't this mean that the SNP will have a fair bit of power now with all these seats?
It also seems that Scotland has loads of little constituencies with relative little population, is that right?

Galloway absolutely hammered. Seems like people have woken up to the fact the man is a self-publicist and rubbish local MP.

It looks to me like the system needs a major overhaul. Can't see it happening any time soon though

Cons gain Colchester, fairly established Lib Dems previously.

Jeremy Vine still enjoying Knightmare.

I'm stunned. I thought Russell's majority would have been eroded but still clung on. To lose by that margin is stunning. The Lib Dems are fucked.

The SNP were only likely to have a role in government if Labour beat the Tories but fell short of an outright majority, which was a realistic possibility going in but seems unlikely to happen now.

They were in something of a no-lose situation in this election, though. The now likely outcome still suits them as it plays perfectly into their favourite chippy bullshit narrative, namely one of a Westminster establishment led by English Tories lording it over a Scotland that wants independence. In many ways (for them), this is preferable to the complications of coalition government.

Their inevitable call for another independence rederendum has a lot more political legitimacy than it did 24 hours ago. A sad day for us who love Scotland but identify ourselves, first and foremost, as British.

Will they not have the power to veto any proposals they don't like now? Or just veto things to be an annoying thorn? Or doesn't it really work like that

My company has an office in Edinburgh. I might ask for a transfer up there before they cut the cord!

Just waking up what a night, and the public has spoken, clearly don't trust Labour to run the country and rightly so.

Well done Scotland for making sure the Tories stayed in power and looking like not even needing anyone else to help them.

Has Paddy eaten his hat yet? :bg:

Cannot believe this is happening.

The Lib Dems have been stitched up, big time. Almost as if this was planned.

No.

A lot of issues are devolved these days, so Scotland can already choose a different course when it comes to some issues (see tuition fees as an example).

Had we ended up with a Labour-SNP coalition or the SNP propping up a minority Labour government in some other way, the SNP would have effectively enjoyed a power of veto with regards to the UK government's legislative programme as Labour would have relied on SNP votes to get anything through the commons.

If Labour isn't, following this election, a party of government, we don't need to worry about the above. Plenty else to worry about, though.

Turning schools and hospitals into businesses with executives earning £100k plus a year. Very convenient when it's Tory donors and friends who are profiting.

Fucking disgraceful.

Don't really know what to think about that result, surprising and disappointing to the say the least. Looks like Conservatives are on for a majority.
