The result is even more damning since this round of the Pokal is usually a formality for the German top tier sides. Hamburg aren't the only Buli side to get knocked out by a lower division club though: Augsburg lost at Magdeburg 0-2.

There are (and were) always upsets in the Cup even in the 1st round.
As I wrote before, matches at the Bremer Brücke are always hard fought ones. HSV lost there in 2009, too.

Yes, later that evening. At the time when I wrote my post HSV was the only one.

btw: Yesterday at Herthas match at Hansa Rostock there was a nearly 20 minute delay due to some pyrotechnics from idiots. Unbelievable these guys (fans of both clubs were involved in the delay) and they've done their clubs a disservice (it was 0-0 btw at that moment in the 75th minute) because both clubs will be fined (Rostock already had a fine before and now this...). After the delay Hansa was totally out of form and Hertha had an easy game with them for the last minutes and scored twice.

Tomorrow the 55th season starts. "Traditionally" the Champion opens it. Bayern looks for the 6th opening win in a row, which would match Kaiserslauterns starting record from 1989-1994. And if you look at the opponent, Bayer Leverkusen, this should be more than possible because Leverkusens record at Munich in the last 25years is abysmal (1Win-3Draws-21Losses) plus they lost Toprak (to Dortmund), Calhanoglu (AC Milan) and Chicharito (West Ham).

Interesting to watch is Schalke 04 vs RB Leipzig. Schalke with a new coach, one of the "wild young ones" Domenico Tedesco who made the best coaches exam in Germany (was in the same class as Hoffenheims Julian Nagelsmann). First match was a 2-0 away win in the Cup against former East German Stasi club (and serial killer (champion) in the GDR) Dynamo Berlin (now a 4th division club) with both goals from "new goalgetter" Konoplyanka, who didn't make it under former Coach Weinzierl.

The only 2 Bundesliga clubs who lost their Cup matches, HSV and Augsburg, are playing against each other. HSV better win this thing otherwise we would already have to endure the same shitstorm from the big papers in Hamburg right from the beginning again.
Yours truly will be amongst the 55.000, as always

1st matchday:

Bayern München - Bayer Leverkusen (Friday)
Saturday, 19. 8.2017 - Sunday, 20.8.2017
1899 Hoffenheim - Werder Bremen
Hertha BSC - VfB Stuttgart
SC Freiburg - Eintracht Frankfurt
Borussia Mönchengladbach - 1. FC Köln
Schalke 04 - RB Leipzig
Hamburger SV - FC Augsburg
FSV Mainz 05 - Hannover 96
VfL Wolfsburg - Borussia Dortmund

Flying out to Frankfurt tomorrow morning and have a ticket sorted for Darmstadt vs. St. Pauli in the evening. I've been told to try the Paprikawurst out there but I'm looking forward to my first match in Germany.

Well this is awkward, I'm team Dirk and HSV...

Good boy!

"Willkommen in Deutschland" I hope you'll have a safe trip to Germany and back home.

May I ask why you've chosen Darmstadt? Not the most exciting place in Germany to watch a football match. Seeing that you land in Frankfurt and Eintracht with an away match it would be the "nearest location", right? (landing in Hamburg would be better because we have a home match this weekend ;)).
Anyway, I hope you'll see an entertaining match nonetheless (although 2 more or less unattractive clubs are playing :D)
Paprikawurst? Is this a "hessian speciality"? Or do you mean Currywurst? (I traditionally eat a Bratwurst and drink a beer at half-time in the Volksparkstadium)

(not me ;) , it's from this article https://www.abendblatt.de/sport/fus...esstes-Mahl-findet-bei-HSV-Spielen-statt.html . (titled: Hamburgs biggest meal is at HSV matches. More than 30.000 Bratwürste are eaten during a match)

Sponsor beer, Veltins....(not without a cause Schalke is playing in the Veltins Arena).
Prost!

Darmstadt do play in an old, crumbling ground though, and they have their charms (if it doesn't rain). And since they don't have permission to play there beyond January(?) there might not be many more chances.

Is a Paprikawurst a Feuerwurst?

Debut goal for Süle.

And the free kick came from "fellow Hoff" Sebastian Rudy. So already a good deal for Bayern. Ah, and this frenchman Tolisso also made his debut goal for Bayern.

"Historical": First Video "evidence" in the Bundesliga: Penalty for Bayern. So Bayern made all their 3 Goals due to standards. Bayer Leverkusen much better than expected, after the 0-3 they created lots of chances but only 1 Goal. Typical.

"Funny" opening ceremony where every of the 18 Bundesliga clubs was represented by a former Legend of the club. A "Legend" from RB Leipzig? :ffs:
I was a bit disappointed by the choice of most clubs, especially my HSV. Not our greatest Legend, Uwe Seeler, not even Manni Kaltz, Felix Magath or Horst Hrubesch, but our "minor royalty" Thomas von Heesen

btw: Seems that Aberstone has seen a good match at the old Böllenfalltor. Deserved 3-0 against Hamburg's second fiddle

Just coming home from the match (had a few...) Unbelievable, we really won the opening match, for the first time in ages. :ds:
But it wouldn't be the HSV if there wasn't a downer. Nicolai Müller injured himself while celebrating his goal.:ffs:

Anyway, 3 points after 1 match. Last season we had 2 points...after 10 matches . Europe, we are coming

Sad to see ITV 4 won't have highlights of the weekend action on Monday nights now.

Probably got to make way for "I am a celebrity" etc.

BTW Do you get highlights of the Premier league games over in Germany a lot? (or even live games)

We get Highlights on Free TV (Sport1) on Monday evening. No Premier League live games on German Free TV (ok, that's understandable). Sky Germany (Pay TV) had the rights for Live matches but I think they lost it now. DAZN (or whatever the name of this streamtv is) has rights too. But I watch Premier League (and Championship) on BT or SkyUK via Kodi.

To answer your question Dirk about why Darmstadt. Mainz were playing at home yesterday so if I wanted to stay another day, I could have taken in 2 matches within the Frankfurt regional area.

Found a decent beer house in town where a local was kind enough to buy us some shots - local whisky which I'll never be having again.

It looked like a full house which I was very impressed with for a 6:30 KO and a doff of the cap to the 2,000 Pauli fans getting drenched on the open terrace. Pauli had the better of the early exchanges but Darmstadt gradually eased into the game and were far more clinical. Got talking to a couple of away supporters onto the train back into Frankfurt, let's just say they weren't complimentary about HSV or Hansa Rostock.

Thanks for the recommendations by the way DangerousSausage, annoyingly I've only just seen your message about places to eat and drink. Regarding possibly being homeless from January, that would go some to explaining why I was given a leaflet outside the ground which was titled Fans vs. DFB and both supporters had 'Fuck the DFB' banners displayed.

And? Did you see the Mainz match? If yes, you would at least be able to see the "little HSV", the pride of Lower Saxony ;)

What? Drinking local whisky in Germany is like drinking british beer. Who would do that? :D

Typical Pauli Fans. :fart:
Always seem so "tolerant" but they aren't better than every other fan group /i

btw: Shocking diagnosis today from Hamburgs University Hospital. Müller suffered a cruciate ligament rupture. Out for at least 6 months. Damn.....
All the best wishes, Nico.

We have some seriously good real ales Dirk. Many of your compatriates pay silly money for the honour of drinking it!

My team is Waldhof Mannheim, who play in the Regionalliga Südwest, which is the fourth division. They're well known in Germany having played in the Bundesliga in the 80s and Bundesliga 2 until 2003. They're still near the top of the all-time Bundesliga 2 table. In 2003 they were demoted to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg, then the fourth level and now the fifth. In the last two seasons they reached the play-offs for a place in the third division and lost, last season on penalties (there is no automatic promotion - sore topic).

I spent a good part of yesterday watching them lose 1-0 at home to Freiburg II. One of those days where nothing goes right and every pass goes astray. A goal conceded on the stroke of half time and a second half spent huffing and puffing but not really getting close to creating a chance, let alone scoring. Waldhof are capable of much better. Freiburg approached the match positively and had some decent talent in their ranks, they'll surprise a few people this season. The away attendance was 4 out of a crowd of 4400.

Stuttgarter Kackers away next, three points essential in order not to lose touch with the play-off spots.

It was only a joke. I've tasted it, too, from time to time when I visited the UK (for more than 30 years now I am coming but I would never "import" a british beer ). It's a bit uncomfortable to carry always a "Kasten Deutsches Bier" with me.

My team is Waldhof Mannheim, who play in the Regionalliga Südwest, which is the fourth division. They're well known in Germany having played in the Bundesliga in the 80s and Bundesliga 2 until 2003.

With cult coach Klaus "Schlappi" Schlappner.

4 away fans. These second teams of Bundesliga clubs are a plague. I don't like it that they are playing in the leagues and not in something like "reserve leagues"

Kackers? :lol:Only a typo or are they really shit(ters)?

My mistake I thought it was Bayern's Muller.

So you've only read Bilo's last post and not mine before? I understand.

If it was Carling you tried I could understand. Yuck!

As a non-native speaker I don't get everything right. I also tend to slip up with Fickers Offenbach. No idea where I get that from

Another prominent former player is one David Wagner, who the local rag is busily claiming as one of their own although he only played five games in the famous blue and black! Not to mention World Cup-winning coach Sepp Herberger, who has never quite been forgiven for joining VfR Mannheim in 1922. Memories are long in football.

I am under the impression that you don't get it intentionally right from time to time ;).

apropos Sepp Herberger: You even had another member of the '54 World Cup squad in your team, Fritz Walter. Although not the original one only his namesake. But he was quite successful too during his stay in Mannheim in the 80s (before he went to Stuttgart)

Were you at the match? The new black shirt of Gladbach looks great

btw: Bundesliga "Funny" Facts: #1 HSV Right back Dennis Diekmeier:

(Come on, Dennis!!! Only 1 more match :D )

He needs only one more match to be Bundesliga's most harmless player ever. 182 matches for the HSV, 0 Goals. OK, normally he should hinder the opponent to score goals (with more or less success) but sometimes he's in front of the opponents goal, too and...fails :D

Dennis Diekmeier (DD) is more successful in making babies to his wife Dana Diekmeier (DD). 4 children ( all named that the initals are DD ).... maybe he should force a move to Dynamo Dresden (DD)?

Not at this, since moving back I attempt to get to see at least one home game a season and any others that I happen to be in the vicinity of ( at Leicester in the pre season friendly)

The black shirt is good however I pefer us in mainly white with the green/black trim.. The fluorescent green away strip doesn't do anything for me.

Has Dennis been without yellow or red cards as well?
