Perfect debut for Hamburg's new home kit, a 0-3 home defeat

Vanni, that was so typical HSV. Perfect scenario: Sell out crowd of 57.000, high expectations and then they blew it on the field.

Although we had a fair amount of big chances in the first half the win for Holstein was deserved.

btw: It was our first competition match against Holstein since 1963, in the pre-Bundesliga era.

Anyway, it's only the first match of a long season and remember last season where we began with 2 Wins in the Bundesliga. So maybe it's a warning shot to the right time that this season won't be a "no-brainer". Next week they'll have the chance to (Red Dead) Redemption, away at Sandhausen.


My personal highlight was the little pre-match ceremony where HSV and Germany Legend Uwe Seeler was on the field. Good to see my childhood hero fit again after some health problems. He's nearly 82 now.

St.Pauli wins again, 2-0 at the Millerntor against the Lilies from Darmstadt (their first loss in the last 12 League matches.
6 points now from the first 2 matches. Not bad I have to admit.

Today at 8:30pm (7:30pm UK time) we'll see the "Supercup" match between Bayern and Eintracht Frankfurt, a replay of the Cup final from May, only that Nico Kovac is now Bayern coach.

I switched off after the 2-0. This was clear from the beginning that Frankfurt will lose.

Nor am I expecting a title race or anything. I just hope someone has the quality to be a decent runner-up to Bayern. Haven't gone through the squads just yet (the Buli only kicks off in a fortnight as it's Pokal weekend in a few days) but reports are promising regarding BvB. Hopefully Schalke can play some better stuff and I reckon Bayer FC were the real contenders last season. Lots of promise shown, just need to keep this going this season.

The drop is going to be the more interesting battle (it always is). I have high hopes for Düsseldorf and Nürnberg (not really I'm just saying this but it would be nice for such big places to have a team in the top divison for more than 2 seasons, actually Nürnberg have stayed for longer man this is a long bracket).

Anyway can't wait.

Hamburg hadn't won 3-0 away in the league since February 2017 (at Leipzig). This stat isn't very interesting is it? Oh well.

tbh i am not a big fan of Lucien Favre as coach. But maybe the years in Ligue 1 were good for him. But I like the work of Domenico Tedesco. One of the "Jungen Wilden" like Nagelsmann (both are mates and made their coaching diploma at the same time (Tedesco was the best one of the class though before Nagelsmann).

Let's see how both and their team now perform with Champions League Football in addition.

Anyway, can't wait for the catastrophic 2018 football year (for Hamburg, the Bundesliga in Europe and Germany, too) to end. Can't get any worse....saying that we'll play France in a few weeks in this new competition "Nations League" (still don't know the rules of it ) Oh my....

1st round of the DFB Pokal and already some typical Cup results:

Biggest surprise of course the exit of last seasons Cup winners Eintracht Frankfurt against 4th tier SSV Ulm.
3 months after winning the final against Bayern they embarrassed themselves again (after last weeks 0-5 hammering in the Super Cup).
Plenty of work to do for Adolf H from Austria.
If this goes on he won't survive the winter break.

Another surprise was the exit of last seasons (late) high flyers VfB Stuttgart against Hansa Rostock (the former Bundesliga club is actually playing in the 3.Liga).

Bloody Dynamo Dresden out too against 4th tier Rödinghausen. Well done!

HSV got the work done, not without some embarrassment (of course), 3 Goals conceding against a 5th tier club is too much but that's the Cup. And when you score 5 then, it's okay.

Last few games this evening. Freiburg a last-gasp equaliser and penalties to get past Cottbus while it's still goalless between Fürth and Dortmund with less than half an hour to go.
Would be fun to see Dortmund knocked out.

Today the Bundesliga starts into its 56th season. The opening match will be between the actual (or should I say "eternal" ?) Champion Bayern and last years 3rd Hoffenheim. It'll be the only Bundesliga match (besides the Cup final, of course) with the national anthem, the Deutschlandlied, at the beginning.


Hoffenheim with Julian Nagelsmann in his last season before he moves to RB Leipzig should be contesting Bayern more than the ones in the last years but I don't think that the end-result will be different to it though.

Anyway, they were a "ray of hope" in an otherwise dull season for German football, national and international. Although they lost 2 key players in Niklas Süle and Sebastian Rudy to Bayern before the start of last season (and during the Winter break another one in Sandro Wagner), they could improve their already best Bundesliga season (4th) with a 3rd place finish and first time appearance in the Champions League (last season they failed to qualify as 4th against the PL 4th, Liverpool).

Match will be shown live in German Free TV (ZDF), as usual. One of few matches nowadays. (Champions League Football is now out of Free tv beginning from this season.)

Been watching a couple of games this weekend and I must say VAR is rubbish. Bayern beat Hoffenheim 3-1 at home (zzzzz) BUT scored 2 late goals. Now, Bayern's second was a penalty which Baumann saved from Lewandowski but Robben tucked in the rebound only for VAR to tell the ref that Robben entered the penalty area before Lewandowski had a shot. Lewandowski then had to retake the penalty which he scored (of course he did). Then, we have Müller deflecting in a shot. Goal. Well, no. Cause Müller deflected it with his hand.
Then yesterday, I watched Wolfsburg/Schalke and we had another VAR incident! Ref sends off Weghorst (Wolfsburg new #9) for a bad reaction (and it was a bad reaction) but he is then being told by VAR that it's the wrong decision so he finally gets a caution and stays on the pitch!

I tell ya, there shouldn't even be referees on the pitch no more. They're just puppets who take the easy decision and each time there's a tough call, the real decision-maker is VAR. Football is dead (it's been dead for a long time mind but this is another drop).

Hopefully Dortmund/Leipzig (kicking off now, TOPSPIEL!) isn't VAR-infested.

Still glad the Buli is back.

Dortmund on top after matchday 1: Winning 4-1 against Leipzig (although the Saxons already scored after 30 seconds). Axel Witsel again with a goal, good buy. English talent Jadon Sancho with an assist to Marco Reus' 4-1.

Good to see another club on top of the Bundesliga (yeah, it's only the 1st matchday and last season Dortmund was there too until the 8th or 9th matchday, but you know what I mean )

Buli2: Good to see that St.Pauli's good start with 2 wins in the first 2 matches came to an end at Union Berlin. 1-4 against "die Eisernen" which gives them the lead of the 2nd tier with 7 points.

HSV today in the "Montagsspiel" against Arminia Bielefeld (they had a decent start with 4 pts from 2 matches). I'll be there!

Well done dude, your boys won 3-0 tonight. With Köln and Union on 7, you're 3rd with 6. Promises to be an incredible promotion that. Going to Köln/St Pauli in February (hopefully tickets won't be too hard to get) and should see both sides competing still.

The Home Office of Saxony has cancelled tomorrow's 2nd Bundesliga match between Dynamo Dresden and HSV because they need all their police to be in Chemnitz (the former Karl Marx Stadt of the GDR) after the incidents of last week there'll be another demonstration (and counter demo, of course).

btw: "Open door Day" this weekend in Bielefeld (vs Jahn Regensburg) and Hamburg-St.Pauli (vs Köln). 5-3 in both matches, thankfully the Hamburg match was an away win

Wow, Werder Bremen! Hate to admit this but that was impressive yesterday in Frankfurt. Now they've got Nuri Sahin from Dortmund, so they could be even better. Could be Europa next year for the first time in ages for Werder?

And Wolfsburg was impressive, too. 3-1 win in Leverkusen.
Bloody Leverkusen with a classical "Fehlstart" and Bruno Labbadia could win for the first time in 13 tries against the Aspirins.

I do openly admit that I'm no expert on European/Worldwide football - hell, I'm not even an expert on League 2 - but I didn't know that D.Dresden had such a massive problem with racism. I thought they were like loads of other clubs (sadly) and only had a minority of moronic racists but I was way off!

I met this friend of mine the other week - I hadn't seen this guy for close to two years - and I asked him how he got on in Dresden as I knew he was over there doing some office work apparently. Anyway, he told me that he went to watch D.D. a couple of times and was shocked at the blatant racism in the home stands. What shocked him the most was that even the kids were already full blown racists! So sad me thinks

yes, Dynamo Dresden has sometimes a problem with such moron fans (although the majority of their fans are just fans ). There were some incidents in the past.
I can't comment on the general behaviour in the stands during home matches because I don't watch Dresden games but when your friend made these experiences with racism in the stands I believe him. It's very sad that he made these experiences by visiting a German football match.
As for the some kids there being blatant racists: Often they only "parrott" what they hear from the elders without thinking about it much. Not that this is an excuse.
I personally despise any racism. This has no place everywhere, especially not in a football stadium. A bit banter about the opponent is okay but racism? No!

Agreed on kids mimicking their parents but personally I find this a tad disturbing, and simply unacceptable in this day and age. If I were to witness such a thing with my own eyes I would politely approach the kid's parent/s and have a quiet word with them. Who knows, they might see sense.....or take it badly and I end up lying in some hospital bed

Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching Hamburg v St Pauli on the 30th of this month, and hoping for an away win!

I think the hooligan element is also very disturbing in Dresden. Very, very rough fans. I wouldn't try and reason a kind of Dresden fans.

A group of fans wanted to have a photo taken with the Allianz Arena in the background so I duly obliged. As I gave them the phone back they said "Viel Spass in dritten Liga" which means enjoy the 3rd division. Dresden ended up going down that season with 1860 surviving.

And disagree about your Hamburg preference. St Pauli get far too much sympathy points. Hamburg is a fine club and should work at getting a bigger fanbase. Now that they're in the 2nd tier, they need to make more of an effort I reckon.

And we drew in the Bundesliga in the Top5 with more than 54.000 average attendance and won't lose much in the 2nd Bundesliga (first match was a 57.000 sell out, 2nd home match more than 47.000, that's big numbers for the 2nd tier)

And we drew in the Bundesliga in the Top5 with more than 54.000 average attendance and won't lose much in the 2nd Bundesliga (first match was a 57.000 sell out, 2nd home match more than 47.000, that's big numbers for the 2nd tier)

The place doesn't have a feel of hatred to be honest. I still reckon that Hamburg should make an effort in their communication in order to get more fans. I'm not basing this on anything. Just a gut feeling.

Hamburg beat Heidenheim 3-2 this afternoon. Still way too early to determine who are the candidates to go up as we've only had 5 games but with 3 wins in 4 games, Hamburg look like they'll be up there rather than struggle in mid-table. Köln and Fürth look like they mean business too. Hopefully we'll have a nice race at the top.

HSV just won the rearranged match in Dresden with 1-0 (although Lasogga failed with a penalty in the 95th minute...anyway ). 4th win in a row in the 2.BuLi and first place. Not bad after the disastrous 0-3 in the 1st match .

If only we had hired Christian Titz right after we sacked Gisdol and had not wasted weeks with the useless Hollerbach. Anyway, old news. Future looks not so bad anymore for the Rothosen!

Last home match we had 45.000 at the Volkspark. That's not bad considering that Heidenheim is one of the more unattractive opponents in the league (although they really played well).

Today in Dresden they had a sellout crowd of 31.000. That's not bad either for a 6.30 kickoff match at a Tuesday. So the 2nd away game and the 2nd sellout away.

.guess you are the big cheese in that league everyone wants to beat ?

and Köln, of course. They got a surprising 3-5 home defeat last weekend against Paderborn.

That's normal that the opponents are extra motivated against the relegated clubs from BuLi 1. You can't take anything for granted in Liga 2.

I knew that my last post with the standings would backfire sooner or later but I never thought that it would be so fast:

0-5 at home against Jahn Regensburg. Fuck, that was really a shite day. First of all, these Sunday kickoff times in 2nd Bundesliga kill me. 1:30 pm (12:30 pm UK). Made it to the stadium just in time and couldn't believe our starting team. 6 changes from last game. Rotation time as if we're playing in Europe. Don't know what Titz was thinking here but it didn't work at all. The defense was a catastrophe and our goalie Pollersbeck thought that he's Franz Beckenbauer before the 0-1. Well, he's clearly not. But he's not the only one to blame.

With 0-3 behind we got an (undeserved) penalty. Aaron Hunt himself and he shot it like a 5 year old. Even I had saved this ball.
FFS, this was shit right from the beginning. Second half "explosion" and getting the equalizer? No way, implosion and we even got 2 more (could've been even worse). Köln got a 3-5 home defeat last weekend but at least they showed something. We did nothing of it today. That was a reminder of our darkest times (mostly against Bayern) and hopefully a warning at the right time that you can't take anything for granted in the 2nd Bundesliga which is way more competitive than the Bundesliga.
Köln now back at first but at least we're still 2nd because Darmstadt, Fürth couldn't win (resp. lost) either.

Next matchday already from Tuesday til Thursday. HSV has to play at Fürth (#4, 1pt behind HSV) on Thursday and then next sunday the Hamburg Derby against St.Pauli.
