Like dealing with any feral creature in it's own habitat one has to adapt.......feeding time at Zoo Corner is invariably from 3pm every other Saturday so what with the Jannerfolk sporting extra digits the tying up of shoelaces , doing up of buttons and even pulling of zips can proove problematic so there is a window of opportunity before the jannerfolk herd in which to take up a safe position

This season has got to be the worst for away days from our point of view at least for a few years now. Stinks even more when you look at all the ones in the league above considering how spectacular our bottle job was last season

You're not the only ones, there used to be a club called Stroud Town, but they had their ground in nearby Nailsworth... bunch of tinpotters, I do wonder whatever became of them.

I hadn’t realised there was that connection between Newport & Scunthorpe.

It is reported that the original club was set up by steelworkers predominantly from Wolverhampton who had moved to Newport for work hence the black & amber shirts.

Lysaght's bought a disused ironworks in Wolverhampton and later transferred people and machinery to Newport. The works football team was the foundation of Newport County. Later on, Lysaght's opened its first steelworks at Scunthorpe and Scunthorpe steel was shipped to the rolling mills in Newport. BTW, the name Lysaght is found in Australia today, where the original Lysaghts set up business for the export of steel from the UK. Lysaghts is fully functioning as a business in Oz and I have seen the name there, as well as in Singapore and Malaysia, where they have international offices today.

Thanks for mentioning the shirt colours. I didn't know that is where the amber (old gold in Wolves case) and black came from. Scunny too adopted the colours of a Midlands side (Aston Villa), with ours being claret and blue. We started out in green and white stripes

We spent most of our time in ’The Corner Bar’ you see it as you leave the station. If you want a £2 something pint and the football on that’ll do. Can see the ground from the bar and there’s an offy and a chippy nearby.

If you don't want to stray too far from the ground - Corner Bar, Cheshire Inn, Brunswick and Express are your best bets. Personally recommend the Brunny out of all of them but it can get busy.

Some better pubs further afield from the ground including my local, The Imp. Excellent and affordable prices at all although I recommend you don't buy a £4.50 pint of Heineken at the Corner Bar.

Which begs the question why did Newport RFC play in amber. Don’t know for sure but may well originate back to the 1500s when the Earl of Stafford / Duke of Buckingham owned Newport castle. Amber is shown on the family shield of the coat of arms. Incidentally the 3rd Duke of Buckingham was executed by Henry VIII for treason and as a sign of betrayal the chevron on the shield was inverted as we see it today. Normally it’s the other way up to represent a roof - the word chevron is of French origin for rafter.

Solely judging grounds is too vague. You can have a cracking old stadium in a terrible location or a bland stadium in a great location. I tend to judge it on the wider awayday itself. So in my opinion:

ELITE - Macclesfield, Grimsby, Mansfield, Carlisle, Plymouth, Newport

GOOD - Cambridge, Morecambe, Exeter, Cheltenham

AVERAGE - Vale (would probably enjoy it more if it wasn't a local game), Swindon, Bradford, Leyton Orient, Northampton

POOR (BUT SAVED FROM SHITE BY BEING NEAR TO AN AFFORDABLE MAJOR CITY) - Walsall, Oldham, Salford

SHITE - Colchester, Scunthorpe, Stevenage, Crawley

TOO SHITE TO BE CALLED SHITE - Forest Green

The ELITE all have a range of fantastic pubs for away fans within proximity to the ground and/or station and the walk to the stadium from the station or town centre is straightforward.

The GOOD are all good drinking towns but the walk to the stadium is the one thing I'll hold against them. Morecambe's wouldn't be as bad if you didn't have to meander all around the estates to get from the town to the ground but the other three are treks from the station.

The AVERAGE - Vale is a bastard of a walk to get to but I'd probably appreciate the pubs a lot more if there wasn't bad blood between us two. The others (except Northampton) are decent old school grounds with not much around them, so it'd be harsh to call them shite. Northampton is a bland ground but it's cheap to get to and there are a couple of decent pubs as well.

The POOR are saved by Birmingham in the case of the former and Manchester in the case of the latter two.

The SHITE are either two old school clubs with terribly bland out of town stadiums in the case of the former or just two boring London dormitory towns with out of town bland stadiums in the case of the latter.

As for Forest Green, everything about the day is just terrible. Transport, food, lack of pubs, distance from a major town/station, that bastard hill you have to walk up, the open air away side. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Going off my logic, Crewe would fall under elite as it has everything an away fan should want, even if the away end isn't the best. Cheap pubs and an easy to find ground though go a long way!

You reckon there’s nothing around the CG? It’s an easy stroll from the station, plenty of pubs to choose from (OK, some you wouldn’t want to poke your head in as an away fan), there’s a fantastic real ale pub 5 minutes walk from the station - the Glue Pot - and for all you gastronomes a KFC/Burger King and a good old chippy right on the roundabout by the ground. Access into and out of Swindon is piss easy and there’s plenty of parking.

Loving how rattled the clowns from up the road are getting. Imagine feeling the need to google the exact distances from the station to the ground to try and justify a point! The facilities and view from the Barn Park end is much better than what is served up in that second hand stand from bloody Barnet.

Thanks for the reply. I had a look at the Corner Bar yesterday, I think I'll perch up there and watch the second half of the Premiership game. Seems like the Corner Bar has a good mix of Ales and Lager (I'll drink both)

Funnily enough, in my local in London, I think the lager starts at £5.50!
